Feed My Starving Children

During my freshman year, with my confirmation class at church we had many service opportunities available to us; one which I particularly took part in was our semi-annual church blood drive. During the drive, I signed participants in and helped direct people prior to and after giving blood. Some other various events I volunteered at was our monthly pancake breakfast, the parish Christmas party, and I also went to Feed My Starving Children with my church group to help fill boxes.

Work Experience
Babysitting
I began babysitting for a family with three young kids this previous spring. There is a 7-year old little boy and two little girls, age five and four years old. I am usually in charge of feeding them dinner or lunch (depending on the time),

helping them with homework, teaching the four-year old the alphabet, and also putting them to bed (which is a lot harder than it sounds, especially after they have ice cream for dessert). Babysitting has made me more responsible and alert around the children and I’ve learned how to work with the kids and get them to listen to me.

Asbury Gardens Senior Living Facility (Dietary Dept.)
This past summer I got my first job at Asbury Garden Senior Living Facility where I work as a waitress in their dining room. Because it is not exactly like a traditional waitressing job, there are other skills I have attained in addition to remembering orders, quickly getting food on the tables, and being a pleasant and attentive server. The people I work with in their sixties and older with varying health conditions which sometimes make the job more difficult. I must be sure each table has the proper drinks prior to the people coming to the dining room, I need to be patient and speak up so they understand what I may be asking them, and I need to be sure to get special orders exactly right especially when they have dietary restrictions. Some of the customers also have some signs of dementia beginning to show so working with those customers to be sure they have a satisfactory dining experience can be very different than most serving jobs. The job is great though because I am able to put a smile on their faces every night and be sure they are receiving the best service they can get while living at Asbury’s.
