Hunger is one of the biggest issues that the world faces today. In America, when we hear of hunger, we think about third world countries like Africa, not knowing that we Americans face that problem right here under our nose. A Place at the Table is trying to show us how hunger is being unnoticed in America, and the movie “fed up” is trying to show the viewers how the consumption of junk food has led to obesity and how obesity has caused more deaths than starvation. Both movies shows us of how unhealthy food is being consumed and why people consume the most unhealthy food. Fed Up is more persuasive, because it shows that people lack the knowledge of what to take into their body, and some of the people are just used to eating in that Some of the Americans have no idea of the side effects of some of the food products they consume into their body daily, and that is why this country is growing with obesity and high death rates from sugar consumption. Young kids are overweight due to lack of information. This movie is more persuasive than A Place at the Table because some people are unaware of the reason why they are just gaining unnecessary weight. Some of the kids that were interviewed were used to eating fattening food, especially those from the South. A kid named Brady Kyle, said he was bullied and called fat. He said he eats what his parents prepare for him and feels that because he is fat he feels like he is failing. Fed Up is showing its audience that being obese does not just affect the health of young kids. It also lowers their self-esteem and it makes them socially unstable. According to the movie, it says 2 out of 3 Americans are obese. The movie wants to understand that some of us know that we are obese and fat, but what are Americans doing about it? What is the American government doing to solve the issue of obesity? 12 year old Maggie Valentine was ordered by her doctor to go see a nutritionist. Her parents called, and the doctors told them they do not see kids her age. What this shows is that Americans complain that the younger kids are overweight for their age, but when action wants to be taken, the Instead, we shy away from this situation because we do not want to acknowledge that this is a big issue in this country. A Place at the Table shows how our government worries about the wrong areas of agriculture and food production in the United States , instead of concentrating on the main issue which is hunger and the production of unhealthy food that leads to a lot of death, over weight, breathing conditions, etc. Fed Up shows its viewers the rate at which obesity has increased over the years and why obesity continues to grow in this country. Fed Up also states how advertisement has made Americans feel like it is cheaper to eat unhealthy food. Americans lack the information that it is cheaper to eat healthy food because of the message stored in their head that fast foods are cheaper. The movie also states that some people are prone to genetics to be obese, but that is not an excuse to keep eating unhealthy food. Obesity in America can be considered to be at an all time high, and this is particularly evident in the documentary. One man was brave enough to take on the challenge to show America what they were actually putting into their bodies when eating fast food. By using ethos, logos, and pathos, “Supersize Me” became one of the most watched documentaries in the history of United States film and shocked people throughout the nation. Without the use of these rhetorical appeals, this documentary quite possibly would not have had the effect that it did on its audience. The documentary was very successful in getting its’ main thesis across. The audience left the documentary with a different view on the fast-food industry and the growing problem of obesity in the United States. The film opens with disturbing images and clips of obese people and unhealthy habits in action. The film really focuses on advertisement as a main culprit for childhood and adult obesity. Fed Up is a film directed by Stephanie Soechtig, with Executive Producers Katie Couric and Laurie David. The filmmaker’s intent is mainly to inform people of the dangers of too much sugar, but it also talks about the fat’s in our diets and the food corporation shadiness. The filmmaker wants to educate the country on the effects of a poor diet and to open eyes to the obesity catastrophe in the United States. The main debate used is that sugar is the direct matter of obesity. Overall, I don’t believe the filmmaker’s debate was successful.

In order to further investigate the main cause of obesity, Morgan Spurlock, the film director and main character, decides to criticize the fast food industry for its connection with obesity in America. In his documentary Spurlock performs a radical experiment that drives him to eat only from McDonald's and order a super-sized meal whenever he is asked. By including visual and textual techniques, rhetorical appeals, and argumentative evidences, Morgan Spurlock was able to help viewers know the risks of fast food and how it has caused America to be the world's “fattest country”.

As obesity and medical problems due to diet become a larger issue within society, it is imperative to educate humans on the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. This is exactly what Hungry for Change does. One of the key points made in the documentary is that humans no longer eat a natural diet like their ancestors did; when humans first began to inhabit the Earth they lived off a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats. During these periods famine and disease was rampant, so humans adapted to store nutrition more productively. Now that humans live in a more developed society, they have a (practically) unlimited supply of food. However, much of this food is processed and manipulated to have a better flavour and a longer shelf life, and though this sounds like a positive situation, it has become a huge problem. According to best-selling women’s health author Dr. Christine Northrup, “We’ve lived on Earth for a millennium where there was a food shortage. Obesity in children across America has become an increasing public health concern. Obesity has been identified as an epidemic that is plaguing our children in the United States. In some countries around the world children are dying of starvation everyday. How can this happen when here in America the opposite is a major problem? This is not to say that in America there are no hungry or starving children. It has been proven that our children suffer from obesity, and “children who are overweight or obese as preschoolers are five times as likely as normal-weight children to be overweight or obese as adults” (“Hope”). Obesity not only can cause a child to become more prone to having health problems down the road, but it can also make them feel insecure about themselves. There needs to be action taken in schools as well as in homes to help prevent this growing epidemic.

She swims four days a week, runs, walks her dogs, and at the end is seen learning how to kayak. Her mother attempts to feed her a good diet at home, of low fat products, and Maggie tries to make good choices at school, but is hindered by what is offered in the cafeteria. She exercises, eats what the food companies tell her is good and still fails, so who then is to blame? Obesity has become an epidemic in today’s society. Today around 50% of America is now considered to be over weight. Fast-food consumption has been a major contributor to the debate of the twenty-first century. Chapter thirteen, titled “Is Fast-Food the New Tobacco,” in the They Say I Say book, consists of authors discussing the debate of fast-food’s link to obesity. Authors debate the government’s effects on the fast-food industry, along with whether or not the fast-food industry is to blame for the rise in obesity throughout America. While some people blame the fast food industry for the rise in obesity, others believe it is a matter of personal responsibility to watch what someone eats and make sure they get the proper exercise.
According to “Burger Battles” from the Weekly Reader, obesity is defined as a person whose weight is 20 percent higher than recommended for their height (Burger Battles 1). When this condition begins to affect children lives, it is then known as childhood obesity. Within the United States of America, around 15 percent of children are considered to be obese (Holguin 3). Increasing tremendously, this outbreak has actually tripled in the amount of obese teen and doubled in children up to the age of thirteen (Burger Battles 2). One of the factors that is usually overlooked in the cause for obesity is the role of television. Not only does it reduce the amount of physical activity, the advertisements and commercials are targeting innocent viewers. In a survey completed by Gary Ruskin of Commercial Alert, the average child watches nearly 19 hours and 40 minutes of television a week (Ruskin 2). With that amount of time spent watching television, advertisements for fast food will be entering the children’s minds.
In the first film we watched “Fed Up” I did not really enjoy watching it. The film focuses on the causes of obesity in the U.S. It presents evidence showing that the large quantities of sugar in processed foods are an overlooked root of the problem of America. “Big Sugar” is looking at attempts to enact effective policies to address the issue. In choosing your food do you really want to consume all of this sugar.
