Fear and Loathing On The Campaign Trail ’72 was a book about a writer for the Rolling Stone and his coverage of the presidential elections in 1972. These elections were between the incumbent Republican, President Richard Nixon and the Senator from South Dakota, George McGovern. The election of 1972 saw McGovern come out of the democratic National Convention over Senators Muskie and Humphrey but only to lose to the incumbent president Richard Nixon.
Hunter S. Thompson writes about the Election of 1972 from December 1971, before any primaries, to December 1972 after Nixon has won the election. It is a truthful first person account of what happened during the presidential race that year with much personal, side talk about Thompson’s life, experiences, and his coverage four years ago about the 1968 election. Thompson writes this book in a unique style that he has made called Gonzo Journalism. This style of writing is a deeply personal style of writing and is very opinionated. He does not give the facts on the election straight but instead gives his opinions on the people involved. It is a very subjective point of view and shows Thompson’s very liberal perspective. He is a strong supporter and is an enthusiast of the democratic candidate McGovern and shows time and time again how much he despises Nixon. In the books, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and Plunkitt of Tammay Hall, they both focus on how life was like in America during 1905. But they show it in different perspectives. In the book The Jungle, the characters in it are attempting to live the American Dream after migrating from Lithuania to The United States. And in the Plunkitt of Tammay Hall, it is about a sentor named Geroge Washington Plunkitt, who shares his secrets on how to be the best Politican. Throughout both books, they both focus on many of the same issues, yet view them different. The three reoccuring themes I saw in bth books were, government corruption, social class conflicts, and Urbanization. Through out this paper, I will be analyzing the differences between the two books and these three themes.
Killing Reagan is a book written by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. The book’s focus is to take readers behind the scenes, through the life and times of Ronald Reagan. From his Hollywood days to his days in presidency, near-death experience, and the nearly impossible obstacles he had to overcome in order to carry out the duties as a man and as President of the United States. The authors wanted to create a portrait of a “great man operating in violent times”, and that they did.
Tim O’Brien begins his journey as a young “politically naive” man and has recently graduated out of Macalester College in the United States of America. O’Brien’s plan for the future is steady, but this quickly changes as a call to an adventure ruins his expected path in life. Both John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon were elected to Congress at 46, a year in which the New Deal took a serious beating as the Republicans regained control of Congress on the slogan Had Enough? Nixon, of course, had campaigned against incumbent Jerry Voorhis on an anti-New Deal platform, but it's often forgotten that when JFK first ran for the House in 1946, he differentiated himself from his Democratic primary opposition by describing himself as a fighting conservative. In private, Kennedy's antipathy to the traditional FDR New Deal was even more extensive. When Kennedy and Nixon were sworn in on the same day, both were already outspoken on the subject of the emerging Cold War. While running for office in 1946, Kennedy proudly told a radio audience of how he had lashed out against a left-wing group of Young Democrats for being naive on the subject of the Soviet Union, and how he had also attacked the emerging radical faction headed by Henry Wallace.

She analyzed conversations among her students to find out what helped them in becoming engaged in the classroom discussion. The class she chose as her subject had eleven women and nine men. Tannen said that she observed the class for a good amount of time when she concluded that almost all the men talked in class occasionally. The student who talked the most in class was a woman, but then she mentions almost half of the women did not speak at all in class. Tannen decided to divide her class in ways where she could prove her thesis statement that having both genders in the same classroom is an issue. She analyzed the students, separated them into three groups that are relevant to each, from their degree, gender, and the conversation style that she observed from each student. Naturally, she focused on how the all-woman group became talkative once the men were gone. At this point of her essay, she focused too much on what she was trying to prove with her thesis statement rather than really giving the readers to consider the other side of the story. As Tannen goes on with explaining the experiment she conducted in class, she started to divert with including the ethnicity of some students. The foreign students tend to talk less despite what gender, therefore counting the validity of their contribution out. The information provided towards the end of the essay started to become irrelevant. This part of her essay was very weak, showing some obvious bias as she was sharing the information
I knew I was in for something different before even opening the book. On the cover of the book was a skull colored by the American flag, with swastikas in its eye sockets. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, as I had no idea who Hunter S. Thompson was. I opened the book and began to read through the author’s preface. Throughout were numerous references to drugs, sex, and politics. I began to get a picture of who HST was and about his style of writing.
Charles Brockden Brown’s Wieland is a novel that was written as a reaction to the author’s thoughts and observations of the political climate of the time, says Emory Elliot in his introduction to the work. He also notes that Brown asserted “the nation’s leaders were the ones who most needed to read fiction because the best novels most effectively portray the realities of the human condition” and that “serious novels would challenge the most intelligent readers and demand their full intellectual engagement and reflection” (Elliot, ix). This was in opposition to the general consensus that novel reading was “an idle and even dangerous pastime” (Elliot, ix). Brown’s goal in writing novels was to develop a literary style that was clearly “’American’” (Elliot, x). In this way, Brown’s illustration of a relationship between perception and knowledge exists not only within his novel, but can be extended to the climate of the day and represent a genre that is wholly ‘American’.
Chapter 9 “Political Parties” describes the term as “organized groups that attempt to influence the government by electing their members to important government offices” (Ginsberg, Lowi, Weir, and Tolbert 341). The Republican Party nominated Nixon for presidency and won in 1968 and when the 1972 election grew closer the Republicans nominated the incumbent again for the position. In 1972 “Nixon defeated Democratic candidate George McGovern by one of the widest margins on record” (Freidel and Sidey, “Richard M. Nixon”). The film depicts a scene where political parties are discussed in the media with connection to the Watergate Scandal (Howard, Frost/ Nixon). Political parties are known for helping their candidate win elections however, the Watergate scandal dealt with illegal spying to win reelection and whether or not the former president had knowledge over what was occurring. Taken at face value, Norman Mailer’s Armies of the Night and Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test may seem very similar. They are both centered on a major author of the 1960s and his experiencing of historical events of the time, while set in the style of New Journalism. When examined closer, though, it becomes apparent that these novels represent two very different sides of New Journalism – Armies of the Night an autobiography with personal and political motivations, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test a sociological piece which tries to capture the essence of its subjects rather than the absolute facts. By looking at the form and style which the novels were written in and the motives behind Mailer’s Armies of the Night and Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test it is revealed how these novels represent the two major directions which New Journalism can take.
According to the SACHA Sexual Assault Center, rape culture involves everyday phenomena that “make violence against women and sexual coercion seem so normal that people believe that rape is inevitable” (“What is rape culture,” n.d.). Common examples of rape culture include: telling women to always travel in groups at night, asking survivors what they were wearing or if they were drinking during the time of the assault, and ignoring or stigmatizing males who are sexually assaulted (Ray, 2013). On college campuses, rape culture can contribute to the underreporting of sexual assaults, as survivors may be ashamed or afraid of humiliation. Furthermore, the presence of rape myths perpetuates the overall rape culture by shaping public opinion towards blaming survivors and discounting the actions of offenders. Largely cited myths, such as women falsely reporting rape to protect their reputations or because they are angry with the accused perpetrator, are based on a kernel of truth that is unrepresentative of the realities surrounding these issues (Burnett et al., 2009). Rape culture is alive and well on college campuses, despite being a broader societal issue. While this socially ingrained behavior is difficult to reverse, universities are major institutions that must accept partial responsibility for the perpetuation of rape culture and consequently need to devise programs for change that circumvent this erroneous

Things like rape and violence have a severe impact on the mentality level of people. Their lives will change forever after going through an intense situation such as being molested, beaten, or anything along those lines. It has caused people to commit the same crime, become severely depressed and suicidal, as well as many other unfortunate events. Through characters such as Nils Krogstad and Torvald Helmer, one sees how those living in this society worried primarily over their social standing and reputation, while through the character of Mrs. Lindie the reader sees how even women fell into the trap of behaving as “dolls”: doing everything that is expected of them while remaining obedient. Though some of these characters may seem cruel, they have a huge impact on Nora’s character and help push her towards the realization that she is not living as she wants to live. Brunnemer says, “There is an evolutionary process whereby the mini-Nora of the opening scenes becomes the super-Nora of the close” (1). In the beginning of the play, Nora is portrayed as an obedient wife who would never stray from her husband’s wishes, and subsequently society’s expectations. By the end of the play, we see her blossom into an individual who wishes to make her own decisions and follow her own path. Brunnemer also says that, “Nora in having her worst fears materialize, is freed from them” (1). This statement summarizes the ultimate push for Nora’s transformation, by mentioning that she does not fully realize her lack of freedom until her husband discovers the forgery. Elizabeth explains the powerful feeling of loving someone. Her being able to write Sonnet 43 shows the extent of her love towards her husband. Elizabeth also wrote Sonnet 14, which explains that love should not be for a specific reason but real love is for love. The poem also goes into details about one loving a person for who they are and not for a particular deed. Sonnet 14 and several other poems were dedicated to Robert Browning. Over all, Elizabeth was admired for her independence and courage. The Browning’s were well respected in Italy. Her social consciousness drove much of her late canon towards realism.
