People in today’s society fear many things. But for what reason do we fear these things? In almost every way, the answer to that question will be because of the media’s exaggeration of life. The media causes us to fear these things through their usage of cleverly camouflaged facts, exaggerated stories, and one-sided information.
Fear is a compelling factor, so the media uses it as a way to give themselves an advantage, specifically, with big news stories such as plane crashes. The media assumes that because one plane crash occurs, many more will happen, more lives will be lost, and ultimately says planes are the spiraling darkness of society, all because of one crash (Glassner 191). However, there are also facts that some people don’t know as well, such as how serial killers usually have an IQ higher than that of an average person. Also, as children, serial killers suffer a large amount of abuse of all types. Finally, 9 out of 10 victims of serial killers are white (CrimeCaseFiles). People have also seen news of serial killers, causing fear. For example, many serial killers will go on mass killing sprees, killing many people for a period of time and then stop for a long period of time, making their time of murdering a lot longer. A serial killer tends to be very charismatic and easy to talk to. They could be posing as an injured person needed help getting into their car, which Ted Bundy was notorious for doing (CriminalElement). Serial killers can pose as a simple plumber or house cleaner, gaining easy access to your name. They also are known for having psychopathic traits and not feeling any remorse for their victims, leading them to kill multiple times.
