Odysseus brave, always able to think fast and able to fight the good fight when the need arises has been one of my favorite hero's since I first read about him. Throughout the Odyssey we are able to how great of a hero he truly is. If there was a defining moment that made Odysseus my favorite classical hero I would never be able to pick just one. This is due to how Odysseus was not just one kind of hero, he was the hero that knew how to think his way out of any problem, as well as a hero that would know the time he needed to use force to get the job done. As we progress in this essay my goal is to show you the classical hero that taught me not only is your strength a valuable ally but your mind and quick thinking as well. With how we are able to travel on his journey home with him we get a first hand look at his bravery and tactical skill in book nine, as well as his foresight when it came to other situations through the story. From when he was able to blind the cyclops and then trick him into thinking his name was “nobody” was just amazing to see cause not to long before it seemed like there was no way for Odysseus and his men to escape. Although Odysseus was the cause of the problem he was also able to become the solution to it, this seemed unique to me from many hero's that I had read about before. This is because when you look at other hero's while they may solve the problems that are put towards them they are rarely the cause of that problem like he was. Although at the time I didn't consider him to be the best hero that I had read about he was starting to grow on me. It was not until book 15 and 16 that I felt Odysseus was a true hero, not one that was so far out of reach like so many classic or modern hero's can be. T... ... middle of paper ... ...ally some men were killed and how the disloyal maids had died as well. This may just be because the writing style of that time was different, but it showed a darker side to Odysseus and those that fought with him. With this said I feel you can understand how Odysseus is my favorite classical hero, he was a man that had no name. A man that could think his way out of any problem that he faced while at the same time a man that would fight to make sure what mattered to him was safe no matter what kind of trash had to be killed. He was a man that over the course of the story changed and adapted to what the situation had called for. Whether that meant hiding his true identity from both friend and foe, needing to be able to get his men out of very tight situations like in book nine, or having to go in an all out fight he is a classical hero I am surly not going to forget.
Odysseus, during his long journey, exhibited many heroic qualities including bravery, strength, and determination. He was determined to return to his family after hs journey, and he bravely fought to stay alive during the cyclope situation, as well as other situations, and showed strength by being able to battle the cyclopes in self-defense. However, Odysseus was also obnoxiously arrogant about his victory and was actually very selfish throughout his entire story; he almost did not leave his town to help with the war because he did not want to leave to protect his family. Although Odysseus exemplified heroic qualities, this does not make him a true hero.
Opposed to that of common thought, superman is not the only type of character that fits the heroic persona. Although “superheroes” typically come to mind when one thinks of a hero, there are many other ordinary people capable of extraordinary things. A hero is a person who takes the initiative to set out on a journey of internal growth. During this symbolic journey, one truly finds himself and betters the lives of other mentally and physically. In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus takes the path of heroism, resulting in the reborn spirit of a selfless, modest hero. During the process, Odysseus is faced with many challenges that he must overcome in order to earn the noble title. Odysseus proves himself to be a well-deserving hero because he is intelligent with his decisions, he displays cleverness, and he rids himself of hubris.
Odysseus is unique among epic heroes in that his strength comes not from inhuman powers or exceptional physical ability, but mainly from his mind. Odysseus, regularly uses cunning, guile, and superiority of intellect to overcome obstacles. In this paper I will compare Odysseus to other epic heroes, both in terms of character and in terms of responses to crises, comparing his reactions with those of other heroes placed in similar situations.
...lusion, Odysseus makes ethical decisions to benefit others, overcomes adversity with vast amounts of courage, and illustrates humility by relinquishing his hubris to rightfully earn the title of hero. Whether Odysseus has to be unfaithful to his lover or saving lives by stuffing ears with wax, he never forgets that others’ lives are at stake and sparing them are of paramount importance. Also, the hero expresses a radiant sense of confidence that reflect in others whether physically, mentally, or spiritually. Finally, the hero abandons his bravado in order to find his role in the universe, under the power of the gods. Though he has made several mistakes in the past dealing with his cosmic hubris, he has apologized for his mistakes by showing piety in the gods that tower over him. Overall, Odysseus, through his many actions, has rightfully earned the title hero.
"Furthermore, we have not even to risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time here gone before us." (p.1 A Heroes Adventure). This quote from Homers Epic Poem the Odyssey, expresses the true essence of a hero. Odysseus would make a great hero because he is loyal, has leadership qualities, and preserves through hardships.
In conclusion, Odysseus conveys the qualities of a true hero, He shows fortitude, bravery and he portrays qualities of management. Odysseus shows these qualities throughout the journey in which he faced many challenging people and places. However, Odysseus overcomes each and every one by having only one set goal: to get home. As long as he reached that goal, nothing could stop him. Like a true hero, Odysseus never lost these traits, no matter how bad of a mess he was in.
Odysseus’ character , as seen in the Iliad, is much like that of a Homeric hero. A hero in Homer’s world entails many attributes other than physical strength including, but not limited to, courage, honor, respect, intelligence, and good morals. Throughout The Odyssey, some of these character traits are illustrated, and some are slightly changed.
Odysseus shows that he is very heroic throughout The Odyssey as he fights trouble after trouble boldly. CD For example, when Odysseus and his crew have the frightening option of either passing Scylla or Charybdis, Odysseus shows his fearlessness and choses to pass Scylla. CM When Odysseus passes Scylla without losing men he feels confident and undefeatable. CM This shows that Odysseus is always quick thinking and wise
Odysseus is one of the very many prominent characters in Homer’s Epic poems, The Illiad, and The Odyssey. Odysseus has been famed one of the more relatable characters from Homer’s writing, as well as one of the Greatest Greek Mythology Heroes. Homer’s Epic poems highlight many periods of shame and honor for Odysseus. The character analysis of Odysseus through the poem’s timeline shows vast developments and heroic features appear to take form in him. The Illiad portrayed Odysseus as more of a secondary figure behind Agamemnon and Achilles. In contrast, The Odyssey portrayed Odysseus as a hero in the form of an average human.
Overall, Odysseus is a hero because Odysseus is a clever and intelligent man, he is a courageous soldier and leader, and he is loyal to his crew. He never gives up even though it seems like nothing will go right. Odysseus fights against difficult odds and takes unimaginable risks, but stays loyal to his crew one hundred percent of the way. Odysseus is not only a model hero, but he is an epic
Odysseus is not a hero based on the standards of merciful, selfless, and gentle. His actions against Polyphemus, the Suitors, and his men truly show that he is in fact the opposite of a hero. The actions he takes to return home safely and to get back his throne are very cruel and show signs that he lacks the nobility of being called a hero, or a king, or a warrior. He has shown that he powerful, destructive, and ruthless and these are qualities that a hero must not have. Odysseus, the mighty King of Ithaca is not a hero because he is not selfless, gentle, or merciful.
Odysseus can be considered a hero for all of his acts of bravery. However, the fantasy setting and harrowing sense of adventure truly made him and his exploits epic. It's one thing to rescue a crew of sailors in a shipwreck, but to do so on an island of monsters and vengeful gods is quite another.
Odysseus, king of Ithaca, is well known throughout Greek mythology to be an epic hero. As a hero, Odysseus embodies both the classical characteristics and also makes many mistakes. Heroism ultimately comes with both noble qualities and flaws, and Odysseus is no different.
And the answer is yes and no. By Greek mythical terms, Odysseus is most definitely a hero, as he is strong, courageous, and brave. However, by contemporary western terms, he clearly is not, as he is dishonest, arrogant, immoral, and hypocritical. Whether or not Odysseus is a hero is entirely dependent on one’s perspective. Thus, while he may be considered a hero in ancient Greek times, from our perspective in the 21st century, he is no hero, but barbarous
To begin, Odysseus was a very headstrong man that knew to do his duties as a king. Odysseus was not only the king of Ithaca; he was a husband, son, and father. For example, when he came home he didn’t act out of anger. He simply stated,’ Be strong, saith my heart; I am a soldier, I have seen worse sights than this’ (Homer). Most men would have gone straight to killing after seeing the betrayal of people. Not only that, but the fact that men were trying to be with his wife. Odysseus saw way more than just that he had seen his own crew members die. They called his name then were killed. When he did come back Aphrodite disguised him and when he came to his home as a beggar the suitors treated him horrible, but they did not know who he truly was. His son Telemachus told Eureclyia to get him cleaned up. She knew that it was her king because of his scar. The scar he got when he was attacked by a bore. Odysseus was such an interesting man because when he was younger he found out that he liked archery and he then became excellent at it. He would go hunting with his dog named Argos. He was very strong willing and focused, but at the same time he had numerous setbacks.
