Fatherhood, Responsibility, and the Internet
“As if you needed another reason not to trust a skank”(Diatribes, par 1). This is the opening statement on one of the endless amounts of websites on the internet. This particular website, and many others, is about a certain aspect of fatherhood. On the web one can find a site about pretty much anything, and when looking into a particular subject like fatherhood they can find all different types of views on fatherhood, organizations of fathers, and even advice about fathering.
The website that contains the above sentence is a site that discusses stories about some men that do not believe they should pay child support. In some of the cases, the man is unaware that he was the biological father of the child, but was ordered by court to pay to help support the child. Other cases were about divorced couples where the man is upset about providing for the children after the separation even if they are his biological children. In the view of Daniel Callahan, the author of the article “Bioethics and Fatherhood”, this website is nonsense. He argues that, “given the obvious importance of procreation in bringing human life into existence, fathers have a significant moral responsibility for the children they voluntarily procreate”. In the situations where the biological fathers just don’t want to give up their money for the children, Callahan’s argument can be directly applied. For the other cases, the argument can still be used because those men had believed that they were the real fathers at first. The fact that they aren’t obligated to take on the responsibility of caring for that child, does not mean that all responsibility should be taken off the real biological father and put on the man that thought he was. The website, Women’s Health Care Services, also agrees with argument and says, “The father of a child has a legal responsibility to provide for the support, educational, medical and other needs of that child.” Therefore the dad should at least be there financially for their child.
The men in the Diatribes site also are hostile and put the blame on the mothers.
Before analyzing her argument, it is necessary to look into the term "owe." There are two types of "owe"; one is backed by the legal system. For example, if a person borrows money from someone, it is required by law to pay that money back. Another "owe" is responsibility that is backed by morality. For example, if a person sees that someone had an accident; it is a moral responsibility to call an ambulance.
Legally, fathers are responsible for providing prenatal support for their preborn child, but have no legal rights if the mother decides to terminate the life of that child. Many fathers have gone to court to try to stop mothers from going through with their abortions. However, according to the courts, when it comes to abortion, a mother's right to abortion overrides a father's objections.
The father stated that the allegation made by the mother that he does not know how to care for their child is false. He indicated that when the parents were together he took care of the child.
A woman enters into a contract that consists on her getting pregnant with a strangers sperms, and after the baby is born, to give up the baby. The stranger is going to pay the medical expenses and $10,000 in exchange of claiming all the parental rights when the baby is born. The stranger is a good person who has not been able to have children on his own. Why does the morality of the action may seem doubtful? Philosopher Elizabeth Anderson wrote an essay called “is Women’s Labor a Commodity?” to explain in detail the reasons of commercial surrogacy being morally wrong. In her paper, Anderson explains that commercial surrogacy treats children and parental rights as objects that could be bought and sold for personal convenience. According to
Arguments against commercial surrogacy typically revolve around the idea that surrogacy is a form of child-selling. Critics believe that commercial surrogacy violates both women’s and children’s rights. In addition, by making surrogacy contracts legally enforceable, courts will follow the contract rather than choose what is best for the child. However, in her article “Surrogate Mothering: Exploring Empowerment” Laura Pudry is not convinced by these arguments.
Deadbeat dads should take responsibility in taking care of their children. A real man will step up and do what he supposed to do for their children. No mother should raise her child alone. Mothers often ask the father to be in their child life because they fail to do so.There are fully-grown to be in men who abandon their responsibilities . Too many children grow up without a father figure, because the man is not in the child life spending time with them. Mothers should not have to put the father on child support because he is not taking care of child.Men complain when they have to pay child support when all they have to do is: be in the child life, take on responsibilities, and spend time with the child to show that they care. 2011 only 61%
“An estimated 24.7 million children (33%) live in homes absent of their biological father” (“The Extent of Fatherlessness,” 2018). A fatherless home is a family with children who grow throughout most of their adolescent years without their biological father present. Throughout the recent years fatherless homes have become more common in western society; some might say it is a social normality. Fatherlessness can happen for a number of reasons. It can result from couples who are divorced, having children out of wedlock and teen pregnancies, the death of that parent, or any other case that leaves a family with the void of a father. As a result fatherlessness can alter a child's life completely. It can leave emotional, mental and even cause physical
...go serious emotional and mental stress. There are however, more than enough cases in which the harsh enforcement of child support was more than necessary. However, in these cases the father has normally abandoned his children and refuses to own up to his responsiblities as a parent.
“Men of God need to stand up and do what God has brought forth upon them. Being a father is a great role to have,” stated Rob Schwarz. People who have a father present take their fathers for granted, but some people do not even have a father and that is not okay. Fatherlessness is ruining the future of the next generations. The issue of fatherlessness leads to marriage issues, results in children having a bad education and home, and results in disorders and/or substance abuse.
The role of a father is more than just another parent at home (Popenoe, 1996). Having a father, the male biological parent in a child’s life is important because it brings a different type of parenting that cannot be replicated by anyone else (Stanton, 2010). Fathers who are present and active in a child’s life provide great benefits to a developing child (Popenoe, 1996). Having a father brings a different kind of love. The love of the father is more expectant and instrumental, different from the love of a mother (Stanton, as cited in Pruett, 1987).
Should child support obligations be based on the biological, legal and/or social relationship between and adult and child? An answer to this question largely depends on the situation and to whom this question is posed. There could be an array of answers that differ significantly from one person to the next, presenting various valid points. Because several of the answers hold opposing views, it is necessary for unbiased input from third parties, this is when the government gets involved. Shared DNA, while the most accurate way to identify a parent, is not the only mark of a parent as it pertains to emotional, social or financial support. A biological father assumes partial financial support of a child he created whether he wants the child
Before enrolling in my first Communication studies course, I never heard of paternity leave, nor had the concept ever crossed my mind. On multiple occasions, I witnessed my mother take some form of occupational leave due to family matters, but never my father. This created a household dynamic that placed my mother as the primary care giver. The responsibilities associated with parenthood should never be left to one parent. This economically reinforces the idea that child care is exclusive to women. For this reason, family leave should be both available and required for male parents.
Children are the future of the world and need to be nurtured and educated in the best conditions. Thus, parenting is one of the most challenging and admirable responsibilities that people can experience. Parenting plays important roles in the development of children’s characteristics. Some people nurture children depending on their own ways. Others get advice from friends or books. Parenting can be divided into three groups: authoritative, permissive, and democratic parenting.
Surrogacy is becoming extremely popular as a way for people to build their families and women to have a source of income. Many people have various reasons for their opposition to it whether it be by comparing it to prostitution or disagreeing with how military wives take advantage of the Tricare insurance. Lorraine Ali states in her article “The Curious Lives of Surrogates” that one of the more popular reasons to oppose surrogacy is that it contradicts, “what we’ve always thought of as an unbreakable bond between mother and child.” However, a woman’s inability to conceive her own children does not determine the absence of a mother to child bond.
Children of all ages everywhere these days seem to only depend on the internet. The internet is an amazing creation, but people take advantage of it. Since there is internet there is access to all kinds of social media, games, and all sorts of other things. However, because of today’s society internet is one of the only things kids use and go on, whether it’s go on Facebook for hours or watch ridiculous videos on YouTube, the internet is taking a negative turn towards children, their brains, smartness, and attitude. Despite helpful or early learning programs, the internet does not make children smarter.
