The fourth family was at Panera Bread around noon on Saturday. I observed a young girl sitting on her father’s lap. She was talking and hugging him. He was smiling and holding her tightly. Both were sitting and waiting for their food to arrive while watching people around them. The father was looking at her with love and leaned down to talk with her. She continued to sit on her father’s lap as she ate her food. The father was in his late twenties to early thirties and was a Caucasian male. The little girl was around three and was a blonde Caucasian child. Both were dressed casually and t-shirts and jeans. The father appeared to be looking at pictures on his phone some of the time as his daughter ate her lunch. The child moved to sit in her …show more content…
I was buying a few items and decided to get in line behind a couple and a teenager. As I was arrived the man accidentally hit the woman with the shopping cart. She sneered at him that he had hit her on purpose to which he responded that he did not mean to hit her. The look on her face conveyed that she did not believe him. She and her daughter were on one side of the cart. The daughter appeared to be amused by their interactions and appeared to be on the mother’s side through her leaning towards her mother. The woman paid for her items and walked away with her teenager. The man paid for his items separately and soon joined the woman and teenager near the entrance of the store. I ended up walking out right behind them and I hear the woman ask the man what he was looking at as he was looking her direction. He stated he saw an a**hole and they started arguing a lot more. By this time I was too far away to hear the rest of their exchange. Both the adults look miserable and anger at each other. The man and woman both looked like they were in their early fifties and the teenager looked about seventeen. All three of them appeared to be Caucasian and were dressed in jeans and t-shirts. I would speculate that the woman is a maid or does some kind of manual labor. She looked worn out like she had a hard life and did a lot of manual labor. The man looked more professional and could have been a manager …show more content…
Neither one of the adults were wearing wedding rings. I would speculate that they are dating or living together. I do not know if they are recently separated, but there hostility on both ends for this couple. The teenager appeared to have disdain for the male and barely interacted with him. They had a short conversation about a plant they were buying, but it was difficult to hear her words to him. I would say this couple has been together for a long time due to their familiarity and willingness to be rude and mean to each other. The verbal cues involved the couple share some harsh words and were unable to forgive and have a pleasant interaction. All their words were filled with disdain even as they had small exchanging in conversations. The non-verbal cues involved staring and a clenched jaw from the woman. The man had his back to me, so it was difficult to read his non-verbal cues. I did hear his mean comments to the woman when they were leaving the store though. I think the woman has the power, control and decision making ability in this relationship. The woman seemed to set the mood of disdain after she refused to believe that hitting her with a cart was an accident which then seemed to stop any productive communication from occurring. This couple clearly has some issues to work through and was the unhealthiest interaction I observed. This couple could even be experiencing triangulation with the daughter since
The simultaneous distance and closeness within the relationship between the father and the child are inevitable even in the most tragic and happy events in life. The poems “Not Bad, Dad, Not Bad” by Jan Heller Levi and “In the Well” by Andrew Hudgins are both about the closeness and distance in a father and child relationship. Both poems are written in first person, or in the child’s point of view to emphasize the thoughts of distance and the experience of childhood thinking to the readers. The poems both use similar literary devices such as motifs and imagery to illustrate and accentuate the ideas of each event that the narrator, a child, experiences. Similarities between both poems are the use of water as a motif of the barrier to being farther away from the father, and the use of different synonyms for the word, father, to indicate the amount of distance at each point in the poems. On the other hand, each poem takes its route of distance in completely opposite directions. “Not Bad, Dad, Not Bad” by Jan Heller Levi and “In the Well” by Andrew Hudgins accommodate the similarities for the use of the same motif, water, and the use of several synonyms for “dad” throughout the poems, but also differentiate because they proceed in opposite directions from the beginning to the end.
Other People’s Words: The Cycle of Low Literacy by Victoria Purcell-Gates recounts the author’s two-year journey with an illiterate Appalachian family. Purcell-Gates works with Jenny, the mother, and her son, first grader Donny, to analyze the literacy within the household. Throughout the journey, we learn the definition and types of literacy, the influences of society and the environment, and the impacts of literacy on education from the teacher’s perspective. In order to evaluate literacy in the household, one must study multiple types, including functional, informational, and critical literacy. As the name implies, functional literacy incorporates reading and writing as tools for everyday survival. Informational literacy is used through text to communicate information to others. The highest level of literacy, critical literacy, requires critical interpretations and imaginative reflections of text. In her study, Purcell-Gates strives to teach Jenny and Donny functional literacy.
During the Holocaust, father and son relationships existed intensely, especially in the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. Prior to being sent to the concentration camps, Elie had little to no relationship with his father. However, shortly after being taken in as prisoners Elie and his father form an undying bond with each other. They believe they should never be separated for any reason, even if it meant killing them both. In addition to this, they were certain that they should love each other unconditionally. However, when Mr. Wiesel dies, Elie sees no reason to continue living in the horrible concentration camps. Elie explains his reason to live, “My father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me…. He was running at my side, out of breath, at the end of
It all started on the evening of December 7, 1982. A young waitress in her twenties, named Debbie Carter, had taken off of her shift early at a local Ada bar. She proceeded to enjoy a few drinks with several old high school friends before heading home shortly after midnight. Debbie was last seen having a confrontation with a man who was a regular at the bars as she got into her vehicle. The waitress’s friends had asked her to come join a group of them going to back to one of the friend’s houses to continue the hanging out; Debbie declined, but about 2:30a.m., her friend, Gina received two calls back to back from Debbie. Through all the n...
Upon arrival I spoke with Lynn Klann. Lynn stated she was walking her dog around 6pm, when she saw the male that lives at 105 Hawaiian shove his girlfriend down the outside stairs. Lynn stated the female yelled call the police. Lynn stated she retrieved her cellphone and witness the female trying to get out the front door of the residence. Lynn stated she yelled to the female “do you want me to call the cops”. Lynn stated before the female could answer the male pulled her into the residence. Lynn states she yelled she was calling the police. Lynn stated the male yelled “I will burn your shit down too”.
“It is a wise father that knows his own child” stated by William Shakespeare, a poet, which suggests that a good parent must have a connection with their child. However, Shakespeare lacked parental affection, the plays that Shakespeare had written, never had a well established relationship between a parent and their child. However the correlation between a parent and child may vary in many occasions and factors such as a healthy/unhealthy relationship, a tempting desire for self success, and a change of heart. Therefore, through an analysis of Jeannette Wall’s The Glass Castle, William Shakespeare’s King Lear, Tennessee William’s The Glass Menagerie, and Martin Fan’s bond with His parents, it becomes clear that the establishments between a
When defining family, the U.S. Census Bureau defines it as "a family is a group of two or more people related by birth, marriage, or adoption, and residing together". Essentially, this definition pulls a broad pool of people together. In Jack's case, he considers his mother, father, two siblings, both of his grandfathers, his aunt, his wife, and almost newborn baby to be in his family. A household, on the other hand, is anyone that lives together in a particular space (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). Jack explained that his household consists of himself and his wife. Soon, it was also consist of his newborn child.
This observation took place in the children's home. As a playroom they used the living room because that is where all their toys are. For my observation I used both the siblings and their mother. During the observation I was present including the children and their mother. I am not related to those children. I happened to meet them a couple of times because they are related to my boyfriend. I do not see the children frequently. I will see them only when my boyfriend's family will invite us to a family get together. I did not interact with the children at all, only the mother interacted with them.
In literature and in life, people endure events which are the effects from the relationships between a parent and their child. In Death of a Salesman written by Arthur Miller it is evident how the relationship between Willy and his sons creates the downfall of the dysfunctional Loman family. Miller depicts the possessiveness that exists in humans through Willy Loman. In the 1949 era to preserve a healthy household it was important for the father-son relationship to be strong. If conflicts were to arise in their relationship the entire family would collapse and fail. Biff and Happy constantly idolize and praise their father, however, they realize that he is flawed and how as a father he failed to prepare them for the real world. Willy Loman is a man that is happy and proud in one moment and suddenly angry in another, which exhibits how the inconsistencies in his character make it difficult for anyone to have a strong relationship with him. In the play it is evident that the tension between the father and son relationship is the factor that causes the protagonist’s tragedy. The dispute between the father and
I did my parent-child observation at a restaurant in Batesville Indiana. I went to a small family owned place called Wagner’s. I did my observation over Thanksgiving break after my family cut our Christmas tree down. This occurred on Saturday November 28th around 6pm. This is a place that I am relatively familiar with. I have been going there with my family every year since I was a young child. It is a pretty small restaurant. While one side has a bar, the other side is more family oriented. It is a child friendly place that has a small area that toddlers and young kids can play. It has coloring books and small toys.
The other person was taken to the hospital and then asks the women have you ever press charges against your husband? She just side and did not realized that things like that can happen to innocent people. The other women that filed charges had her husband were sent to jail. The first case she pushed but to me it wasn’t hard to prove in cases like that. The reaction is that why couldn’t they look at all bruises that was on each of their body.
A family came in for therapy. There are five people in this family. There are two teenage girls, an 18-year-old male, and a mother and a father. Lately, one of the girls is no longer attending school, she is also withdrawing from friends. She has been disrespectful towards dad. She has been posting lewd pictures on social media, and there are people in the neighborhood telling the parents that they have seen one of their daughters drinking when with their friends.
The relationship between parents and their children is one of the most basic human interactions. Mothers and daughters provide both physical and emotional care for their young sons and daughters. In the process, parents will instill children with family values and goals, while teaching them the accepted norms and values of society. This is done in hope that parents will one day see their own children become mature adults, with their own goals and purposes in life.
The topic I have chosen for my paper is that of relationship between parents and children. Some of the points that I will be discussing are child abuse, child neglect and how it can affect a child and the relationship with the parents.
Everyone has a mom and a dad, however some people only live with one of the parent. Some parents are single parent or some have remarried to a different person, thus giving the child a step parent. If the step parent is up for the challenge and parents correctly they can easily just become a motherly or fatherly figure instead of the step mom or step dad. Regardless, there are many differences between a mom and dad. They typically have different ideas on parenting styles, different attitudes towards certain experiences or ideas, etc. They are almost never completely on the same page, but if they are it is very well known it took quite some time to get there together.
