Sergeant Major Morris told Mr. White. (fate vs. free will) type of theme stated in this quote because we observe that “The Monkey Paws” is full with questions about the power of people in their lives.

Fate: People can have their own destiny if they desire something with full concentration. To have a complete belief on their destination can bring a person destiny like Mr. White regarding their three wishes.

Free Will: Each person can make their own better choice if they belief in themselves, if they forget their bad consequences they dealt in past and if they start each day with a new thought and goal, which will surely leads to his/her better future; rather than depending your life planning ahead by destiny.
