The Style of the 80’s
Just like an Oscar nominee stepping on to the red carpet during the 1980s, Americans were more worried about style. The greatest tragedy of this decade was the rapid spread of AIDS. Government thought that the disease only affected homosexuals and drug users. Technology grew rapidly as well along with video games. The presence of President Ronald Regan was very powerful, and the 80’s was a much more stable decade than the previous two. The people revealed more about themselves than ever before. During 1980-1989 Americans demonstrated expressive, obsessive, and boisterous qualities through their fashion and fads.
Fashion:
As previously stated, fashion during the first decade of 1980 demonstrate that Americans are expressive and obsessive. Sara and Tom Pendergast states “The fashion boom of the 1980s was more international than ever before” (977). Fashion was a big deal. People were proud to display their style. It’s clear to say that they have become expressive and obsessive. There was a rise and fall in the status of high end clothing designers and their extravagant clothes. Fashion came roaring back in the 80s with popular clothing items that were often associated with music trends. There was the punk/goth look, the preppy look, the grunge look, and the formal look along with accessories. The alternatives for those who still wanted to follow fashion were at a reasonable price. Paris, New York, and London were the true centers of world fashion.

...ese years, but it was also an era of economic development and international relations. Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Regan, and Mikhail Gorbachev were the three leading names. Margaret Thatcher reigned as the Prime Minster of the United Kingdom, and she was the only lady to ever hold the position. Ronald Regan, on the other hand was the President of the United States for around 8 years. This was a time that witnessed a few changes as well as the time for outstanding ideas. There were many social trends that found a rise during the 80s. The Rubik’s Cube, Ronald Regan taking power, Mt. St. Helens erupting, AIDS spread, Great Britain and Argentina being at war, Sony developing the first camcorder and Motorola introducing the first mobile phone in the United States, as well as the end of The Cold War. Americans revealed many major trends and events through 1980-1989.
