It is quite evident as you walk around the streets of almost any city or town in America that the line between what was once considered the black style of dress and the white styles has become less and less evident. This is especially true with the younger kids in junior high and high school. The baggy pants and shirts with labels and bright colors that were once reserved for the inner city black and Latino kids, are now being worn by whites in wealthy suburban neighborhoods.
I lived in a wealthy upper middle class area outside of Nashville Tennessee for most of my life and over the past five to ten years the change in style of dress for suburban kids has become more and more evident. Main stream stores such as Dillard’s and Castner Knot’s started carrying the underground hip-hop clothes that were once only found in the larger cities. Even major labels such as Tommy Hillfigger started designing larger clothes with brighter colors. There jeans were available in relaxed fit and even baggy. Hip Hop had now become a large market for young teenagers and people in their early twenties.
I went to a private school with a very strict dress code and even there you could tell that the new urban fashion was having an effect on the way some students dressed. They would try to get baggier pants and would wear bright colored shirts with logos on the front. At ballgames they would wear baggy blue jeans and sweatshirts with “Polo” or “Nautica” emblems on the front. Whenever we had a casual day all the kids would go to the mall and you would see the baggy jeans and bright shirts on everyone. When the weather got colder kids at school started wearing the bomber ski jackets, so many people at my school had them that the school maid them illegal to wear. Also more and more guys started wearing the large hiking boots that were to bulky for their khaki pants, so they had to cut them at the bottom to fit around the boots.
I don’t know exactly how these trends came about but I remember it started when I was in seventh or eighth grade. At first it was the large “Starter” jackets with The Raiders or Miami Dolphins logos on them, and then it went to overalls and Adidas shoes and jackets.
The 1920’s was an era of dramatic political and cultural change, where many Americans lived in cities rather than farms. Many inventors came to be noticed as new cars were invented and as music entered the entertainment industry. A new style of music was invented mainly in the African American community, creating the Harlem Renaissance; which was an evolution of music and entertainment in Harlem, New York City. The women of America began to evolve in the 1920s, adding new styles to our fashion industry and changing the way women dress, act, and are portrayed in society for generations. During the turn of the 5th century, the British Isles were under control of a strong and powerful group of people, called the Anglo-Saxons. These individuals worshipped under a Pagan religion that shaped their society in many ways. During the time period when the story was written, it is believed to have followed strict Paganism beliefs. Since the beginning of time humans have worn clothing that defines their era, race, and personality. From a caveman wearing his favorite mammoth skin to a 1980’s righteous teen wearing her all time favorite bright orange neon retro blazers. Heartbreakingly, at the school of Putnam City North High, fashion has shot down the drain as teens decide to get dress blind folded every morning. As I look around the halls of sweats and dirty over-sized t-shirts, I am bombarded with the embarrassment of having these “fashion senses” be the look of our generation. These undressed, tacky, lazy wear must come to an end before our children look back on the classes of the late 2000’s with expressions of disgust as they wonder what the heck we were thinking.

What Mark Mathabane talks about in his article “Appearances Are Destructive” is how students should be required to wear uniforms in public schools because uniforms encourage students to focus on education. Mathabane draws from his experience from when his sisters from South Africa went to school in the United States. One of the points he makes is how the U.S. is the only country who allow an open dress code in schools. He also talks about how students are more concerned with how they look rather than their education. Mathabane also states how “in schools Nike, Calvin Klein, Adidas, Reebok and Gucci are more familiar names to students than Zora Neale Hurston, Shakespeare, and Faulkner”. Furthermore, he states that if students do not dress in designer clothes they may be ridiculed by others. The author's final opinion is that “It's time Americans realized that the benefits of safe and effective schools far outweigh any perceived curtailment of freedom of expression brought on by dress codes.”
In the middle of the school year, two new students walk through the doors of their new high school. The first student walks into the school with a worn out book bag, tarnished shoes, and noticeably older clothing, and is automatically judged by his peers on his wardrobe. The next student walks into the school wearing all of the latest name brands, expensive jewelry, and immediately she is judged as well. The student with the visibly “higher maintenance” wardrobe is instantly approached by another student who is dressed in the same type of apparel. The student with the visibly older clothing is never approached by another student and is forced to bear the challenge of a new school on his own. Too many times in public school systems, this pre-judgment is a reality for students. School uniforms have been enforced to restrict certain types of apparel that can be worn during the school day. School uniforms are often said to restrict a student’s ability to creatively express himself through his wardrobe, but uniforms should be required in all public schools because they are an effective way in enhancing a student’s learning ability and overall school environment, by taking away the ability for students to pre-judge others based on their wardrobe.
The styles at the beginning of this decade were influenced heavily on the music. With the invention of iPods later in this decade, music was making an imprint on fashion. Rap music had a major influence on the dress of this decade. The Pop Punk look included low rise jeans, crop tops and trucker hats. Accessories included bellow button rings and piercings. Most of this style came from the previous decade and filtered into the beginning of the 2000s. Hip-hop dress took the influence from artists who dressed in baggy clothes. The Renaissance time period started in the late 14th century and it lasted all through the 16th century. This was also the period where the word “European” was put in use and understood by other places, and the word “Renascrere” originated from the Italian word “Renascrere” and it meant to be re-born. Unlike “The Dream of the Rood” where the poem focuses on redemption and uses the tree to represent a redeemed sinner, Beowulf, himself, is used to parallel that of Jesus Christ. In the story, Beowulf is a thane who not only possesses supernatural strength but is the embodiment of the values held by the warrior society. Just like modern-day Christians tend to see God in this likeness, so did Beowulf’s poet which is how he initially begins to make the correlations for a more ignorant and confused, pagan audience. Once hearing of the perils Hrothgar’s kingdom faces, Beowulf sails with a group of thanes in order to fight the beasts that plague the land and free the kingdom of their terrors. In other words, he came to redeem Hrothgar’s people just as Jesus Christ came down to redeem mankind. During the first night when Beowulf’s men stay at Heorot, they are attacked by Grendel who is “among the banished monsters, Cain’s clan, whom the Creator has outlawed and condemned as outcasts” (“Beowulf”, 43). As the poem progresses, Beowulf clashes with Grendel and eventually Grendel’s mother but reigns triumphant. These conquests are used to show how effortlessly Christ is able to do the same against heinous, demonic forces. From the moment I starting my educational path I knew four years wouldn’t be enough to fill me with all the dimensions of the fashion industry. This led me to make my decision to apply for the M.S. Global Fashion Enterprise degree. When asked how this program at Philadelphia University would benefit me, I will begin by giving a background on my previous education. I started my undergraduate degree at Buffalo State College in upstate New York pursuing a Bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising. After being in the program for a year I was confident in knowing I needed a change. My journey changed drastically when I moved down to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I transferred to the Art Institute under the same major. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising come this June 2014.
