Rylee Chambers Government and Politics Idaho Farm Bureau Federation “Idaho Farm Bureau Federation is a free, independent, non-governmental, voluntary organization of farm and ranch families united for the purpose of analyzing their problems, and formulating action to achieve educational improvement, economic opportunity, and social advancement and thereby, to promote the national well-being.” It was founded in 1939 in Murtaugh, Idaho and was chartered under the laws of Idaho in May of that year as an independent farm organization. This federation is dedicated to strengthening agriculture and protecting the rights, values, and property of members and their neighbors. The first time that the IFBF affiliated with the American Farm Bureau Federation …show more content…
was on September 15, 1939 when a cooperative agreement was signed between the two and that is when it became an official group. The IFBF is organized into a total of 36 different county chapters around the state and each one of them is made up of a board of directors. Because of this, each bureau varies from county to county since there are different directors and opinions for each one. The board members in each county are farmers and ranchers from the surrounding areas. I interviewed a director from the Latah County Farm Bureau, Marjorie French, who lives in Princeton, Idaho, which is close to where I live. Marjorie has been a member of Farm Bureau since 1970 and is a federation leader of District 5 in Idaho. She tries to involve herself in the local, state, and national level issues along with other board members. In Latah County this includes dividing up land, know as zoning, and protecting private property rights. One of the big things that the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation focusses on is teaching other people about agriculture. In the interview with Marjorie, she said that they own a MAC trailer filled with agricultural learning materials so that they can take agriculture to the classroom. They also have a big plastic cow so that they can teach about dairy and a wheat module so they can teach about the process of growing wheat. Some other ways that they teach people about agriculture is having students grind wheat to make flour and shake cream to make butter. The IFBF supports schools around the state that have “Ag in the Classroom”, offer nutritional food and drinks in vending machines for students like dairy products and fruit juice, and teach the Constitution and the form of government. They support funding for courses and programs in Agricultural Science and Technology, funding for new buildings or to replace existing buildings at schools, and funding for Idaho’s Career Technical Education (CTE). Another thing that is a big factor of the IBFB is livestock. They “support the rights of owners and procedures to raise their animals in accordance with commonly accepted animal husbandry practices.”They also support the equipment and procedures used in animal identification that makes it possible to track an animal back to where it came from. There are many more opinions that the IBFB has since they are so involved in agriculture and farming. To make money, all members of the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation have to pay dues.
That money goes directly to the county, state and national levels so that they can continue to do what they love to do. They also rely on generous donors for some of their funding. Doing this is how they get money for things like the plastic cow, the wheat module, the trailer to take around and teach, and helping fund different places around the community and county. The board members from the county bureau come together every month for a meeting to discuss different issues. According to Marjorie, not as many people come to these meetings during the summer months because there are so many people out on the farm. There is a state meeting every year in December that rotates around the state of Idaho and a national meeting for the American Farm Bureau that happens every year in …show more content…
January. Issues that need to be addressed by the IFBF are brought up at the county level. From there, they go to one of five districts in the state of Idaho where a discussion takes place. After the issue gets through the district level, it then moves on to the state. When it gets to the state it is discussed at the annual convention that takes place in December every year. If the issue is not solved here it may move on to be discussed at the national level. There are a couple of different programs that are affiliated with the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation, the Young Farmers and Ranchers program and the Farm Bureau Women’s committee.
The Young Farmers and Ranchers program (YF&R) is for farmers that are ages 18 to 35. Being a member of this program helps young farmers participate in legislative activities, membership acquisition and maintenance, commodity promotion, local affairs, political education and action, policy development and execution, local affairs, and in other affiliated companies. The Farm Bureau Women’s Committee helps to empower women as strong leaders in agriculture. Some of their goals include agricultural education, leadership, organization, political education and public affairs, consumer understanding, media and information, and policy development. The Women’s Committee also puts on different contests around the state such as speech contests, art design contests, and coloring contests for younger
kids. In May of 1947, the Farm Bureau Insurance company was founded by a group of farmers that were members of the IFBF. During this time, farmers were struggling with getting insurance to protect their crops and that led to this company being founded. One of the major beliefs of this company is that neighbors should help neighbors. This company has continued to grow tremendously over the past 70 years and according to the Executive Vice President and CEO of the Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, Paul Roberts, it will continue to grow and stay a strong presence in Idaho. The Idaho Farm Bureau Federation is once again a program that helps farmers and ranchers out tremendously and not just in Idaho but all around the United States. It is helping farmers all of the time around our country to solve problems that they are having and to get through economically tough times. They are teaching more and more people about agriculture and everything that is affected by it with all of their different things like Ag in the Classroom, the plastic cow, and the wheat module. These kinds of things will help them greatly in the future to become an even more successful organization than they already are. Works Cited French, Marjorie. In 1919, farmers from thirty states, including Missouri, saw a need. They gathered in Chicago and formed the American Farm Bureau Federation. In 1919, they had one goal, they wanted to speak for themselves with the help of their own national organization. Since 1919, Farm Bureau has operated by a philosophy that states: “analyze the problem of farmers and develop a plan of action for these problems” (Missouri). In the past 94 years, the A...
Corn soon became the crop of choice to Iowa farmers. They found that it was more resistant to disease than the other crops they were growing, such as barley, oats, wheat, and apples. With this newfound “wonder crop”, Iowans found that farming had become the ideal way of life. Working on the farm involved all of the members of the family, which brought them together and made them stronger through hardships and great opportunities.
Agribusiness is a growing profession across our nation. Each year our Legislature introduces new farm bills requiring additional need for in-depth studies and introduction to the ever changing farming system. The ranch manager becomes the caretaker of crops, livestock and other animals. A lot of their time is spent outdoors and in meetings with farmers and government agencies. They are basically on call, whether they are tending to farm matters; working and meeting with government agencies; and/or speaking to local communities sharing various farming techniques, they are constantly busy. Ranch managers are an integral part in agribusiness, their focus is to manage and produce a successful farm operation while maintaining required government
The 1920’s were the singularly most influential years of farming in our country. The loss of farms following the war, and new agricultural practices resulted in the dawn of modern agriculture in our country. The shift from small family to big corporation during this time is now the basis for how our society deals with food today. Traditional farming in the 1920’s underwent a series of massive transitions following WWI as the number of farms decreased and the size of farms increased.
Although George Orwell’s Animal Farm was created in order to mimic individuals as well as occurrences that took place during the Russian Revolution period, it is still possible to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text without a past knowledge of history through the exploitation of human nature’s imperfections. Following the publishment of his novel, Orwell confirmed that his goal in writing this fable was to expose the wrongdoing of the Soviet Union as well as the treachery of the true ideas of the Revolution. Nonetheless, there have been several other examples of events such as the French Revolution that can effortlessly be contrasted against components of the allegory. However, we need not to dig no deeper than to the fundamental faults in human nature to witness the catastrophic consequences that attributes such as hierarchy, propaganda and betrayal have on today’s society.

To really begin to understand this complex topic a person really needs to understand the basics of agricultural subsidizing. A subsidy is defined as a grant by a government to a private person or company to assist an enterprise deemed advantageous to the public (Mish, 2003). More specifically, in the agricultural industry the government provides financial assistance to producers in the farm industry in order to prevent decline in production. The government does this by providing financial assistance to farmers and by managing the cost and supply of certain commodities. There a few reasons for this. One reason is to provide assistance to family sized farm owners who have trouble competing with commercial farms. This is supposed to maintain an efficient market balance. Another reason is to control the prices of commodities and keep the global food prices low. There are two main ways that payments are made. The payments may be made directly based on historical cropping patterns on a fixed number of acres. Or they can also be made depending on current market prices. Farmer’s may be guaranteed...
Agriculture is not all work and no play. Many advances can be made in the understanding of agriculture by making available a variety of methods to provide children with a hands-on experience and also educating all individuals about the importance of the practice. The ignorance of urban communities can be overcome with the help of organizations and people within the community. School visits, hands-on experiences, volunteers and organizations are just a few examples of the steps that can be taken to educate Americans about agriculture and close the gap between rural and urban populations.
Farmers are essentially the back-bone of the entire food system. Large-scale family farms account for 10% of all farms, but 75% of overall food production, (CSS statistics). Without farmers, there would be no food for us to consume. Big business picked up on this right away and began to control the farmers profits and products. When farmers buy their land, they take out a loan in order to pay for their land and farm house and for the livestock, crops, and machinery that are involved in the farming process. Today, the loans are paid off through contracts with big business corporations. Since big business has such a hold over the farmers, they take advantage of this and capitalize on their crops, commodities, and profits. Farmers are life-long slaves to these b...
In Genesis 1:29, God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” From the beginning God has given us food for life. Plants, meats, trees, and fruits are offered to us as a means of sustenance from the very same God who made them long ago.
Family farms are slowly fading away from the American landscape due to the increasing number of industrialized farms. Yet, there are so many benefits that the family farm brings to the community that it would be foolish to let them slip away. As Americans, we need to do everything we can to support out family farmers because they help the community out in many ways. Everything from local, fresh, produce, to helping keep our land free from chemicals and insecticides are just a few of the tasks they do to help everyone out. Without them, the United States will turn into a place where only few farm, and those who do, farm for an economical motive. America needs the farmer who not only farms for themselves but for the entire community as well.
The growth of the world’s population has led to a growth in animal agriculture, because as population grows, the need for food does as well. Animal agriculture is the use of animal farms to produce animal products that are then consumed by the general public. As agribusiness expands, issues such as the need for farm insurance and animal rights have received more awareness. Modern day industrialism is being applied to animal agriculture in developed nations such as the United States and Canada. Farm Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on research in agribusiness and improving the economy through agriculture, claims that “the North American livestock industry is expected to
To understand why is agriculture important in the world of today, then first of all we must know what agriculture is? Agriculture is the basic material production of society, the use of land for agriculture and livestock, mining plants and animals as raw materials and labor to produce mainly food and some raw materials for industry. Agriculture is a major industry, covering many disciplines: planting, breeding and processing of agricultural products; in the broadest sense, also including forestry and fisheries. Agriculture is an important economic sector in the economy of many countries, especially in the past century , when the industry has not yet developed. Since the dawn of history, agriculture has been one of the importance means of producing
Due to rural-urban migration, there has been increasing levels of poverty and depopulation in rural areas. This is one of the reasons why the government has seen it as necessary and made it a priority to improve the lives of the people who live in rural areas. Rural development is about enabling people in the rural areas take charge of their destiny. This is through the use and management of the natural resources they are exposed to. This is a process through which people learn over time and they use this knowledge to adapt to the changing world. The purpose of rural development is to improve the lives of people living in the rural areas.
