Far and Away Far and Away was a movie with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It was about the immigration to America. It starts us off with Shannon's dad (Nicole Kidman) giving an iviction letter to Joseph (Tom Cruise) and his family during his fathers funeral. After that it takes on a a wild, exciting adventure to immigration to America, Tenements, Factory conditions, Political machines and bosses, and railroads and settlement of the west. Tenements can be called apartment buildings, apartment complex, apartment house. In 1892 are nothing like they are now. They have one bathroom for everyone that lives in the building. People migrate for land, freedom, and for the though of the better chance at life. In the movie Joseph and Shannon immigrate to America for a better chance at life and for there own land. One thing that made people want to immigrate to America was the Oklahoma race for land. This was an actual race, how people would race each other to the plot of land that they would like. Factory conditions in the 1800s were awful. They had to work in hot and non ventelated buildings. They had a lot of people crammed in a small area. In "Far and Away" Shannon had to take the feathers off chickens. In the seens there were feathers flying everywhere and there was a rude boss. If you would talk back to the boss they were able to take your pay away from you. Railroads and the settlement of the West was a labor demanding period. To build the railroads it took a lot of men. The men would have to work from sunrise to sundown. When people were settling in the west the people would come by train or thousand of people coming by house and buggy. When they first got to the west they would first live in tents. While they were living in tents they would build hotels, suloons and of course houses on the land that they
