People with depression often experience interpersonal problems. Family therapy for depression is a widely used intervention, but it is unclear whether this is an effective therapy for the treatment of depression. Objectives: To assess the efficiency of family therapy for depression of young, middle aged and old people using current standard of practices. Selection criteria: Included studies were randomized controlled and controlled clinical trials comparing family therapy with no intervention or an alternative intervention in which depression symptomatology was a main outcome measure. All randomized controlled trials that included older adults diagnosed as suffering from depression (ICD or DSM criteria) were included. All types of psychotherapeutic treatments were included, categorized into cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal therapy and supportive therapies. Data collection and analysis: Methodological quality was independently assessed by using the Maastricht-Amsterdam Criteria List. The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the selected trials were independently extracted by using a standardized data extraction form. Levels of evidence were used to determine the strength of the evidence available. It was not possible to perform meta-analyses because of the heterogeneity of the selected studies. Standard operating procedures were adopted for data collection and assimilation. The report is based on the DAP, SOAP and BIRP notes collected while preliminary studies and treatment methodology. Meta-analysis was performed, using odds ratios for dichotomous outcomes and weighted mean differences (WMD) for continuous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals. Primary outcomes were a red... ... middle of paper ... ...ect those of a larger meta-analysis that included patients with broader age ranges, suggesting that CBT may be of potential benefit. Many patients in primary care suffer from mental health and psychosocial problems. These problems often involve feelings of sadness, nerves or stress. Many of these problems may be due to personal and social problems or reactions to life events such as physical illness or unemployment. ‘Counseling’ is a recognized psychological therapy that is often provided to such patients. Counselors have often been employed to deliver psychological therapy to patients in primary care settings. Providing counseling alongside other treatments such as cognitive behavior therapy means that patients have greater choice, and that alternatives can be found for patients who either do not benefit from standard treatments or who do not find them acceptable.
This systematic review conducted by Takeda A, Taylor SJC, Taylor RS, Khan F, Krum H, Underwood M, (2012) sourced twenty-five trials, and the overall number of people of the collective trials included was 5,942. Interventions were classified and assessed using the following headings.-
It is essential that when using evidence-based practice guidelines to choose a treatment, that variety of research methods are applied so that the best relevant data can be produced. Such methods include qualitative/quantitative research, randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews. Both qualitative and quantative methods produce valuable data. Quantative research produces numeric evidence that is necessary for practice and can be measured and qualitative research produces descriptive data about the subject by using patients views etc. which can also be applied to clinical practice (Broeder et al, 2010)

Looking at recent publications, one has the impression that family therapy is a new concoction from the psychotherapist's alchemic kitchen. It is met with diverse reactions. Some regard it suspiciously, seeing it as a deviation from traditional therapeutic methods; others praise it as an important advance in the treatment of psychoses. Still others view it as a special method for dealing with children.

There are some key distinctions between Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) in a psychotherapeutic context and a medical context. There are key differences between the design of an RCT to evaluate a new drug and an RCT to evaluate a new form of couples’ therapy. However, it is important to begin by defining and understanding the importance of RCT in research (O'Brien, 2013).
After that, the counselor must identify the situation of the problem and the way the family perceives the problem, for example, are the children more concerned about the family issues than the parents (Horne, 2000). Structural family therapy is both relational and observational approaches, this approach works with the family systematically. And, through the structural family therapy approach, family members are a whole system, which is largely affected by other family member as well as the environment in which they live. With this, the therapy emphasis restructuralization of the family normal destructive habits and help them improve their ability to handle every day stress and disagreement and try to help them transform
Mental illnesses are increasing at an alarming rate worldwide and is one of the significant health problems of today’s world. This essay will present the manifestation of ‘depression in an elderly client in a community mental health setting. Depression among the elderly differs from depression in the younger adults which are accompanied by physical symptoms and co-morbidities rather than emotional symptoms. The presentation of these somatic conditions make the diagnosis of depression difficult in older people and therefore requires the identification of differences in symptoms of depression and coexisting somatic conditions. Depression is associated with significant reduction in cognitive abilities of the elderly. Furthermore decreased in physical and social activities are accompanied. The ATLG, HATH, GAP, and IHP scales have been used in numerous studies and have demonstrated to fall within the range of excellence in reliability (Pedhazur & Schmelkin, 2001). Another strength that the reviewed studies have is they are a relatively large sample size. The majority of the studies sample size ranges from 150 – 300 participants, with the majority of the studies having a relatively high response
Critical appraisal is the process of judging the trustworthiness and the relevance of the evidences (Chambers 2004) presented in a research paper (Carnwell and Daly 2001). A critical appraisal can also be carried out as part of data collection, nevertheless its ultimate aim is to further exclude articles with poor methodological quality. It is important to use appraisal tools that are evidence based. A quantitative and qualitative critical appraisal tool (Appendices 1 and 2) will be the first step in assessing the quality of chosen studies (Greenhalgh 2010). This will be followed by making use of more specific critical appraisal tools depending on whether the study is a survey, a cohort, or a randomised control trial. The following questions should be considered as the essentials of appraising an article:
