The medical family therapist assigned to our family when my father became ill suddenly a few years ago was a gift from God. The therapist helped not only my father however, she helped our family understand the severity of my Dad’s condition. My father had a tumor pressing down on his spinal cord which slowly started affecting his balance then eventually his ability to walk. My father before this condition probably never missed a day of work unless he scheduled it off. Furthermore, my Dad was involved in many different activities, and on the board of directors for our church and his local union. When this illness occurred the doctor immediately suggested sitting down with a counselor to discuss my father’s limitation, and the next course of
It was during my 4th year sub-rotation in family practice medicine that I became fascinated about pursuing a family practice specialty. During my rotation, I worked with an attending physician who was in an Obstetrics and Gynecology fellowship and observed prenatal visits, deliveries and non-pregnancy related visits from members of the same family. The experience increased my knowledge about the different opportunities to provide comprehensive care to patients and be committed to building healthy family lives. I was intrigued about the opportunities in family medicine to provide services to populations of all ages without any limitations to gender or diseases.
I chose to go into the field of Social Work. The reason being I felt that I was good at helping others. I am helpful by nature and I tend to attract those looking to be helped. I believe my career choice is appropriate for me because I do fill enjoyment when I help others. It is something that I get tired of at times but the end result always lifts my spirits. I have been in the helping field for 20 years and I can’t think of any other career that would work best for me.
1. Many people have multiple reasons why they want to be able to help others in their everyday jobs. My attraction to being a Speech Language Pathologist is because I want to be able to people overcome their speech problems. As a Speech Language Pathologist I want to be able to help people that have speech problems, overcome this problem and be able to be independent without needing the help of myself or other people that are trying to talk to them. I personally know their feelings and have actually been in their shoes to know how frustrating life can be trying to talk and have someone else talk for you.
I would like to become a Marriage and Family Therapist because of my previous experiences with volunteering for a non-profit organization and interning for counselors during my undergrad studies. During my junior year of undergrad in Psychology, I told my advisor I was interested in the area of counseling and becoming a therapist. My instructor told me some possible places where I could intern for that year. My first intern job was at a nearby elementary school with the school psychologist. During my time as an intern, I worked with at-risk students and helped assess cognitive and personality exams. I decided after interning at the elementary school that I would like to experience more counseling opportunities since I wasn’t pleased with the
I have wanted to be a counselor since my freshmen year of high school and in the counseling field there are many specialties that I can focus on. I am fairly certain that I want to specialize in helping people with substance abuse and their families. I have always focused my studies, interests, and work on things that will help me in this field and I have a lot of qualities that help to enhance me in my eventual career. There are difficulties when I get to practice also like what people perceive as correct counseling style, challenges with my gender and race, and finally creating my own counseling style and plans.
The career I have chose is Physical Therapy(PT). Physical Therapist do many different things, but their main function is to help impaired or physically disabled people enhance their movement and handle their pain. Physical Therapist are a main source in the rehabilitation, medical care and prevention of people with long lasting illnesses or damage. The reason I chose this career is because I love helping people and enjoy seeing people be motivated and succeed at their task. To help someone gain full strength in their limbs or maybe even learn how to walk again is my lifelong dream. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.
In family therapy sessions, therapists encounter unique dilemmas when only one partner enters into therapy because only one viewpoint of the problem is provided (American Psychological Association, 2002). This is what presents itself for us today. A husband has asked for help in protecting himself and his children from his wife’s outbursts. His family consists of his wife of 11 years, Angelina; his son, John, age nine; and his delicate daughter, Jackie, age seven. Since this client is reserved and uncomfortable within the therapy session as demonstrated by his folded arms and leaning back in his chair away from the therapist, the therapist will begin by using client-centered, therapy-based questions (Rogers, 1946). Post-modern family therapy will incorporate various styles of therapy depending on what a therapist determines is most helpful at any one point during the therapy process (Nichols, 2008). Combining client-centered and experiential therapies would be a logical pairing in this situation (Elliott & Freire, 2007). We will examine the initial interview.
Being a therapist is not only sitting in a chair listening to your clients’ problems all day. It is also not “reading-minds” as many people think and it is not giving advice or solving each clients’ issue. Therapists have many qualities that define the effectiveness of their treatment and their competence in the field. The important qualities that a therapist should have are empathic and great listening skills. In addition to, the therapist must be knowledge in their skills and in the different mental disorders in order to prevent a misdiagnosis. Furthermore, the therapist should have other qualities such as interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with the clients so they can feel secure and continue to come to therapy.
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. Whether the client needs counseling, guidance, or advocacy I want to be the person to help them. My drive for helping others and motivation to change social policies for the better is why I have chosen social work as my future profession.
Marriage and family counselors can work in mental health centers, clinics, hospitals, social service agencies, and private practice. Those in private practice, for example, may specialize in one or two kinds of problems. If they are not practiced in a certain area, they may refer clients to other counselors if they determine that their clients' problems are outside their areas of expertise. Counselors who work in clinics may work in teams, consulting each other on appropriate therapy techniques as well. Counseling are encouraged to work with others counselors to better solve and understand problems that come their way instead of guessing on their own. This holds true in marriage and family counseling as well.
The history of family therapy began around 1960, when Gregory Bateson coined the term, “system thinking.” This type of therapy was a daring departure, both technically and philosophically, from traditional and individual treatment during the 1960s. Gregory Bateson was inspired. He felt that the unit known, as “the family” needed to be celebrated and that is exactly what he did” (Family Therapy, 2010, Para 1) Along with Gregory Bateson, are a list of several others who contributed to the evolution of Marriage and family counseling. This list includes the founder of social work, Mary Richmond, Mr. W. James, who researched the organic expression of social systems intervention and Mr. J. Dewey. Each of these therapists considered family therapy to be, among other things, a “consequence of the development of persistent elements of American professional culture, experience, and philosophy’’ (Family therapy, 2010, Para 2). It is said that the family therapy has a “historical- anthropological viewpoint’’. Moreover, these mentioned have greatly contributed to the overall development that makes up this wonderful field known as family, marriage and counseling or therapy. Marriage and Family counseling does have its relevance to the field of counseling as well as a unique distinction as it relates to Christian identity, function and ethics.
Psychiatry is a very flourishing, and rewarding career of choice. It has many upsCareer and downs. I have chosen this to be my career of choice because I like to help people with their problems, and look after them. I have been interested in this career choice ever since I realized that it is important to help others. I would enjoy a job in this career field for a variety of reasons. One reason would be that it pays quite well, however there will be many challenges to getting a job in this line of work. Some of those challenges include a lot of education, tons of money to pay for all of the schooling required, and the opportunity to actually obtain a job in this career field.
Throughout my life I have always been involved with my family. Being the oldest of five kids, gave me a large load of responsibility. Whenever I helped my family members or cared for them, there was a sense of satisfaction and joy that I felt. So, knowing that I enjoyed caring for them, it felt as though a career in nursing was suitable for me. A few characteristics of mine that are suitable for nursing is that I am flexible and very patient. My own attributes motivate me to earn a degree in nursing, where I am able to serve others. Also, nursing will allow me to give back to my own community as well. To be able to care for and treat my members of my own community would be an honor. Additionally, my interest in nursing revolves around the human
