Family Relationships Family relationships are a central feature of most of our lives (Wyse and Hawtin). To understand families, we must understand that they are basic social unities of a society. Families are composed of members and relationships exist among those members. Individuals are impacted greatly by their families and because of this, it is crucial that every individual should have good relationships with those in their family. Sadly, not every individual is capable of developing these good relationships with members of their family due to the fact that not every member will get along, have the same views, and behave how others want them to. The nature of family life is constantly changing as time goes on as well as the roles and This touchy subject can make the young individual feel awkward or uneasy when discussed with a parent or family member but not so much with their friends. “…they prefer spending much of their time with their peers discussing the ‘new discoveries’ and thus the close relationship with their parents is gradually and slowly eroded…” (Wyse and Hawtin). Parents have expectations for their children as they grow up and this too effects the dynamics of the family relationship. With these expectations, children may feel like there is a lot of undue pressure put on them because their parents are demanding that they act and behave in a certain way to please their parents. As an adolescent, the child may disagree with their parents’ beliefs or practices on how they should behave. This causes conflict within the family life which then leads to changes that occur in the relationships of each member. This can be prevented, however. “For parents and children to have good and successful relationships, respect is of utmost importance. As much as the children will want their parents to respect their freedom and independence, they must also respect their parents’ views and opinions…” (Pryor and Rodgers). Children aren’t expected to just know that they must respect their parents’ views and beliefs and therefore must be taught in order for the family to maintain a healthy
