As an educator the teachers and administrators have to develop a relationship with the parents and their children, the parents must feel in their heart that they are going to be involved in every process of their child’s learning that will take place in the center and with any concerns they have about their child. It is very important for teachers to sit down and learn as much as they can about the child from the parent so he/she will know what is expected from them and the work place. Since the teacher is the person that will spend the most time with the child he/she needs to know how to form the best relationship possible for the parent and child to feel secure and at ease. There are two potential obstacles that could get in the way of any family-centered childcare center. The first being language, and cultural differences between families and school staff. For many centers and teachers these obstacles are formidable to increasing parents' involvement in their children's education. When you have parent and child in your center that falls into this category it is best to learn as much as one can from the parent to learn the likes and dislikes of what the child will eat and what because of religious views the child is allowed to have in the center concerning the food he/she eats. The second would be the language of the parent and child. Sometimes there can be a big disconnect when the teacher/parent does not understand what the other is saying. A requirement in being an early childhood teacher, is to fulfill the needs, of the children and families I will work for. In chapter one, you have the Lawrence and Ashley Family. In the Lawrence family, they are a married couple, which means more income for the family. Whereas the Ashley family has one income. In addition, to the Ashley family, having one income and dealing with the state can bring heartache and struggles to buy food, clothes, housing, school supplies and other day to day activities. The teacher should always listen to input from the parents of their students, and should make the parents feel comfortable discussing with them the problems they see with their child reading a certain book. There should always be parental consent when reading a book so that the parent will be able to discuss with their child their views and issues on a certain book. Always need time to communicate with the parents either formal or informal so we can build trust and be cultural sensitive. A lot of children have two main educators in their life; their parents and their teachers. Parents are their first educators, the majority of what a child learns in the first few years of their life is taught by their parents. It is only when the child starts to attend an early years setting that they start to learn from another educator. Both parents and teachers continue being a major influence on their children's learning all throughout school and for the rest of their lives. The parents and the child's school both have important roles to play in the child's education and should therefore work together as a team. Parents can get involved in many different ways such as; getting involved with the school itself by helping in the classroom or supervising lunch and break times, or for those parents who work in the day and cannot find the time to help at the school they can get involved by; reading to their child at home, assisting with homework and other learning activities, teaching them songs or nursery rhymes and letting them help with everyday tasks like cooking, baking and chores. This can be categorised as: Involvement of parents in the school life or involvement of parents in supporting the individual child at home.
As I personally take the time to have a reflection over the course of “Child and Adolescent Development” I find myself intrigued with the amount of knowledge I gained during this course this semester. I wanted to take the time to concentrate on three specific areas in which I felt I had the most growth, but also came as a challenge to me as well. It is important when reflecting over a course that I look at what I found to be challenging, as this was an opportunity of growth for me individually. In this paper I will review some of the main topics that I found to be interesting but also resourceful for my future aspiration not only as a family life educator but also a mother one day.
In the reading it brings up how most parents are only contacted by the school when it is something bad. This is not how it should be. Teachers should be sending home good news notes to the parents praising the students for their hard work in the class. Schools also need to be welcoming to the families and provide workshops to assist in the parent’s knowledge to allow them to help their children with their schoolwork. Having the parents involved and aware of the things that are going on in the classroom and the school are great ways to build that relationship and to enhance the student’s academic achievement and
