In 2007, the city of Sydney hosted the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. With many world leaders such as then US President George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin attending the meeting, New South Wales police force launched their largest security operation ever. APEC 2007 was a show of power and authority. At a staggering cost of AUD 150 million, the 2007 APEC Forum was the largest security operation Australian had ever seen. The police emptied the entire business district, sent in nearly five thousand police officers and erected a 5 kilometre long steel and concrete barrier to cordon off the entire area. It sounds impregnable and formidable. Yet it failed to prevent a fake Canadian motorcade with a fake Osama …show more content…
bin Laden inside from entering the restricted area. On the 6th of September 2007, the producers of satirical show The Chasers War on Everything sent in a fake Canadian motorcade of eleven actors to test the security apparatus of the APEC forum.
One of the producer, Chas Licciardello even dressed up as notorious jihadist leader Osama bin Laden while hiding inside the car. The motorcade expected to be stopped before even reaching the restricted area. However the motorcade were forced to improvise after the police did not stop them and waved them through. One of the police even said to them "The road is yours." . They were waved through two police checkpoints before Licciardello decided that the motorcade is going too far and decided to expose the entire sham by walking out of the car as Osama bin Laden. The police arrested all of them and lock them up (BBC, 2007). The police commissioner Andrew Scipione responded by calling the stunt "dangerous" as the entire motorcade might be shot by police snipers stationed around Sydney at that time (BBC 2007). The authorities then attempted to charge the eleven actors in the court, arguing that they entered a restricted area without permission. Eventually, all charges against The Chasers were dropped after it was determined that the motorcade posed no ill
intention. With parody, quick thinking and pure humour, the APEC motorcade stunt demonstrated that even a 150 million dollar security effort can be easily fooled. The motorcade stunt also exposed the incompetence of the police force. Other than that, the stunt also made headlines around the world. Although the authorities attempted to charge The Chasers in court in an attempt to show the power of the state, the law seems to fail. The Director of the NSW Public Prosecutions defended the decision to drop the charges, arguing that it was impossible to "to negate, beyond reasonable doubt, the existence of an honest and reasonable belief that the actors would not enter or taken into the restricted area" (Rogers 2010, 293). In contrast to normal criminal trials, courtroom does not have the conviction when the law seeks to punish the use of satire and parody. The ordered, structured and rule-bound character of the legal system is the exact opposite of the playfulness of satire to traditional authorities and courtroom. When confronted with playful satire and parody, the traditional authorities had a hard time to be in control of the situation. They also find it hard to discipline the offenders without causing further ridicule. Similar to violence, playfulness can also de-legitimise authorities in the eyes of the public effectively. Some might argue that it is more effective than violence. While the law can curb and suppress violence, the same thing does not apply to playfulness. For example, after the tragic Port Arthur shooting then Prime Minister John Howard swiftly imposed strict gun control laws to curb and prevent further gun violence. Since then gun related death dropped significantly. However at the same time, it will be absurd for John Howard to ban the use of satire or role playing as Osama bin Laden in response to the 2007 APEC motorcade stunt. Cultural anthropologist Victor Turner observed that playfulness and satire is protected by its "lightness and fleetingness" (Rogers 2010, 291). Playfulness de-legitimise authorities effectively. Furthermore, the APEC motorcade stunt also managed to symbolically penetrate the boundaries the government put up to separate leaders from normal people (Rogers 2010, 299). The APEC 2007 motorcade stunt also exposed the incompetence of the police on duty. The police on duty were so focused on guarding the APEC forum from external threats but remained oblivious to the fact that a fake Osama bin Laden just breached the formidable defences. Despite the huge concentration of the NSW police force and the assumption of ultimate authority, the police failed to perform any basic check on the fake Canadian motorcade. All the members of the motorcade wore fake security passes that proclaimed that they belonged to The Chasers War on Everything (Rogers 2010, 297). At the same time, the police force also failed to notice and pick up some important signs that indicated that it is a fake motorcade. For example, one of the "bodyguard" wore a pair of blue denim jeans, which is inappropriate for an international conference like APEC. Some of fake bodyguards even carried a handheld video recorder while escorting the motorcade. The police on duty were easily duped by The Chasers even with a weak disguise. The Chasers also exposed the police force as incompetent bulwark against serious threats such as terrorism (Rogers 2010, 297). Chas Licciardello's impersonation as Osama bin Laden walking down the street not far from George Bush's hotel is the centrepiece of the entire motorcade stunt. By demonstrating that an elusive jihadist that the West feared the most can easily gain access to one of the most well guarded man on Earth, Licciardello managed to send a strong message to the authorities. Furthermore, the APEC stunt also deconstructed the myth surrounding the global War on Terror (Rogers 2010, 297). After the tragic September 11 terrorist attack, security presence around the world escalated. Surveillance and intelligence agencies also curtailed civil liberties in the name of security and order to combat terrorism. The fact that a fake Osama bin Laden passed the supposedly impregnable security checkpoint with police escort is a huge slap to the War on Terror and security effort in general. By humanising Osama bin Laden as a gatecrasher to the APEC forum, The Chasers crew mocked the world leaders attending the conference and the security effort protecting them with the use of satire. In conclusion, The Chasers APEC stunt showed us the incompetence of the police and the vulnerability of the law when confronting playfulness and satire in general. The stunt also managed to symbolically penetrate the barrier that the government put up to separate leaders from normal people. Most important of all, the stunt deconstructed the myth surrounding the global War of Terror. Sacrificing personal freedom and privacy in the name of security is not a viable and effective way to combat terrorism.
The chase which initially involved a single police officer turned into a twenty plus police vehicle pursuit of Mr.Deady.
The partnership between Australia and Japan instigated with the signing of ANZUS treaty in 1951. ANZUS joined the nations of Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America in a defence security pact for the Pacific region. It chiefly resulted from the fear of communism by Western nations. However, from Australia’s point of view at the time, ANZUS also offered protection against a potential threat from Japan. Australia was concerned that Japan would try to conquer the Pacific region again after suffering defeat in the Second World War. Hanson.M (2001:28) sates that shortly after the end of World War Two, Australia wanted the Japanese government turned into a democracy. She even wanted a peace treaty that punished those leaders responsible for Japan’s aggression, broke the great industrious complexes of Japan’s economy, and left Japan disarmed. The ANZUS treaty however, created a connection between Australia and Japan on easier terms. With United States backing Australia, it was now safe to interact with Japan. Although ANZUS did not guarantee direct military support from United States, it still provided consultation in an event of attack on any of the three countries. Wolferen.K (1989:54) notes that security co-operation has been growing between Australia and Japan throughout the 1990’s. Communist China was the major concern for the two nations. Japan and Australia had the same negative views about communism, which led to them sharing a common purpose in countering the communists within that region.
Late May 2011, a YouTube channel by the name of ksawomen2drive posted an eight minute video. The first day it was up it became the most viewed clip in Saudi Arabia, and became so popular it started trending worldwide. Any non-Arabic viewer might have been slightly baffled by its popularity. To them it would merely be a clip of a woman in a hijab driving while talking to her passenger, and a poorly filmed clip at that. The hundreds of thousands of Arabic viewers however, saw something all together quite different. They were witnessing a crime take place, an act of dissent. The video gained over 600 000 the few days it was up, but was taken down following the arrest of the driver shown in the clip. Manal al-Sharif was that driver.
In society today, it is not uncommon to be surrounded by gangs in our communities. I have recently learned that in my area, we have a local gang known as the Peckerwoods. The Peckerwoods are an Outlaw Motorcycle Club notorious for their hatred towards minorities and earning their income from a variety of illegal practices. In the beginning, when assigned to write about a local gang, I had no idea there were any gangs in my neighborhood so I found this to be intriguing. For this assignment, I was actually able to meet a member of the motorcycle club that allowed me to ask a few questions, and went by the alias “Eddy”. I tried to limit my questions because I did not want to cross any lines. I decided to conduct this interview because he seemed approachable and looked as though he had been involved with the club for a number of years so I decided to take a shot and ask him. He turned out to be a very friendly gentleman, which in my perspective is what these members aim for when creating an image for the public. Below is a summary of my interview conducted with the member:
The impact of the hostage crisis during the 1972 summer games are even relevant in today’s world. Atlanta’s Olympics in 2006 was also attacked. A bomb was placed in an open are an exploded. Although the Atlanta games didn’t have as profound of impact on the world it did prove that security had improved. Some would say that the Munich Massacre is the gateway for more security as well as a highly trained security. CNN’s Senior Washington Correspondent Charles Bierbauer says “Munich was a watershed. In great measure, it has been since 1972 that the general public has submitted to security searches in airports, arenas and other public events -- and learned to live with the threat of terrorism” ().

Many students were curious on the surge of law enforcement that were patrolling the streets of Sacramento on August 30th. On that afternoon, reports confirm that two California Highway Patrol officers and a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department deputy were shot on 2600 block of Auburn Boulevard. Deputy Robert French suffered fatal injuries in the shootout and died on the way to the hospital at the age of 52. Robert was a 21-year veteran to the force, and has worked as a training officer in the north area patrol unit. The other two California Highway Patrol officers still remain hospitalized. Three suspects in totals have been arrested in connection with the incident. This unfortunate series of events began at the Ramada Inn in the 2600 block
After the attacks by the predominantly Saudi extremists on 9-11, the administration of then President George ‘Dubya’ Bush went into overdrive to be seen as proactive in the effort to make sure that the attacks could not be repeated. With the passage of The USA Patriot Act, the then President Bush asserted, we would be handed our intelligence and law enforcement officers the required tools and abilities to fight this new and ‘present danger.’ The document lays out the assertions of the President as of October 26, 2001 as given during a speech at the White House. Also included are the contrasting comments and opinions of Suzanne Spaulding, who has served in the intelligence community for 25 years under both Republican and Democratic presidents and is currently Under Secretary for the National Protection and Programs Directorate at the Department of Homeland Security.
Furthermore, Canada has taken a counter-terrorism position. Canada has created a Counter-Terrorism Capacity Building (CTCB) Program. This allows Canada to help other states to prevent terrorism and respond to terrorist activity according to international counter-terrorism (“Counter-Terrorism Capacity Building Assistance”). Canada provides this Program to share its expertise to other countries in areas such as anti-terrorism funding, border securi...
The plan was reported to the FBI headquarters, but no action was taken. The Trail ways station was filled with Klansmen and reporters. When we exited the bus, they are beaten by the mob with baseball bats, iron pipes and bicycle chains, and then, battered and bleeding, I was arrested. White Freedom Riders were particularly singled out for frenzied beatings. Two riders were hospitalized, including white Freedom Rider. Shuttles worth in Birmingham were notified of the beatings by a fleeing reporter. That night, my partners and i were ejected from the hospital because hospital personnel were afraid of the mob. Eight cars of churchmen, brimming with shotguns and rifles, headed off to rescue us. My partners and I were injured and battered, felt that we could not continue the freedom ride and elected to fly to New Orleans where. At this point, SNCC felt more than ever that the Freedom Rides should continue. Diane Nash of SNCC sent out a call to campuses around the eastern United States for volunteers to come to join the Freedom Ride to keep the demonstration going.
We’re both looking at the top of the roller coaster track begging and pleading that we be taken off. “I don’t want to ride, somebody get me off!” My life had flashed before my eyes as well as my best friends. We began to tell each other that we loved one another. Before we knew it we were at the top of the roller coaster looking down at all of the people who were walking around still living and breathing enjoying funnel cakes, turkey legs and ice cream. As for us at the top of the ride were having panic attacks and screaming as loud as we could but no one seemed to hear us. We were getting ready to have the ride of our lives.
The main intention of the Freedom Ride of 1965 was to raise awareness of discrimination against Aboriginal people and to try and generate a movement for change in Australia. The Freedom Ride is significant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people because the key aims were to improve the level of health, education and living standards of Aboriginal people, including the desegregation of public facilities in regional towns such as Walgett and Moree. The Freedom Ride adopted the non-violent, direct philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr’s US Civil Rights movement. Whilst change did not come immediately, the Freedom Ride contributed to other events which made significant changes to Aboriginal people, such as the 1967 Referendum which acknowledged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s right to be included in the census and to be considered citizens in their own country.
“I’m dead, I am totally dead.” I say as I tried to put the bumper back in place. “Hi, I’m Grace and I drive illegally.” Okay, so here was the story, I was driving my mom’s boyfriend's car, which if I might add is a 30,000 dollar car with new rims and a shiny new wash, to go and babysit some kids for a couple of hours. I will let you know that I am actually a very good driver. I mean who hasn’t crashed a car in their lifetime?
On December 5, 1960, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in the case of Boynton versus Virginia. The case overturned a law-court conviction of a black law student, Bruce Boynton, for trespassing in the “whites-only” section of a bus terminal restaurant. The Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public transportation was illegal because such segregation violated the Interstate Commerce Act. However, the U.S. Government did not actively enforce the ruling and many bus terminals continued to segregate the races. To challenge this, the Interracial Civil Rights Organization known as, C.O.R.E.(The Congregation of Racial Equality), decided to draw attention
