Intro: Did Bradbury predict our future? The dystopian novel “ relentlessly violent” was published in 1953 by American writer, Ray Bradbury. He expressed that he wrote it over concerns of the growing "mass media", he was worried that the media would erase reading for pleasure. It relates to the Cold War through censorship themes and the actions of Adolf Hitler when he was in power as he burned literature like the firemen in the book did. My personal perspective on this book is how I feel distressed by knowing what our future could become if technology continues to advance and we continue mass conforming through trends and the fear of being different. Hitler used this form of mental abuse for control, and it prevented others from opposing his ideas. During the Cold War as well, both the United States and the Soviet Union used censorship as a means to control information and shape public opinion. They restricted access to certain books, films, and media that didn't align with their ideologies. Another quote exclaims "With school turning out more runners, jumpers, racers, tinkerers, grabbers, snatchers, fliers, and swimmers instead of examiners, critics, knowers, and imaginative creators, the word 'intellectual,' of course, became the swear word it deserved to be." This quote highlights how censorship in the book led to a society that discouraged critical thinking and creativity. This shapes my perspective on the book as I felt concerned when I was informed of the use of book burning in Fahrenheit 451s society. It made me reflect on similar real events in this world, ultimately making me feel sympathetic to the victims of Hitlers actions and the Cold
