Fahrenheit 451 Dialectical Journal

1. When other firemen makes Yank believe that Mildred considered him as a hairy ape, he decides to get revenge on her. He declares that it is Mildred who has provoked him. He would do anything to avenge his insult anything to avenge his insult and she would have nobody but herself to blame for that.

2. Mildred and her Aunt seems to have friendly relationship. They continuously argue with each other as friends do. However, at the same time Aunt shows her concerns decision to go over the Stockhole.

3. Long and Yank visits Fifth Avenue in search of Mildred. Yank longs to make things even with her for insulting him on the Stockdale. He intends to teach her a lesson over there.

4. Enraged by not finding Mildred at Fifth Avenue, Yank attempts to

begin a fight with locals. In his attempt, he bumps into a fat man with a hat and makes the man lose his bus. The man in anger calls the police.

When guard notice that Yank has bended one bar of cell and about to bend other, fazed guard rushes to the cell. To subdue Yank, he shoots a strong stream of water at Yank. Meanwhile, he also asks for backup and strait jackets.

6. On Long’s mention of church, yank tells him that he also went to the church in his childhood.. He discloses that his father worked at shores and his mother wasconsumed by “tremens.” He ran away from home, worked at trucking and the market, before finally joining Stockdale.

7. Yank thinks so because he believes than Mildred does not belong in the ship. She is a ‘baggage’, dead weight on Stockdale which is running because he is helping the ship to propel forward. She is inferior to him because she is useless on the ship.

8. In Stockdale, firemen are rhythmically shovelling the fire into the furnace of ship. They were putting coal from pile into the doors of furnace with shovel. clamouring of their shovels with engine and slamming of furnace doors are producing deafening noise.

9. Yank visits the zoo in despair. There, he endeavours to befriend with gorilla inside a cage. In excitement he opens the door to shake gorilla’s hand. The gorilla springs on him and brutally crushes Yank with it’s muscular arms. Yank falls to the ground and

dies.
10. The picture of ‘Rodin the Thinker’ is mentioned in play multiple times. Apart from last scene, where it is used to picture the gorilla, it is used when Yank enters into his ‘tinking’ mode. Whenever he faced problems which cannot be solved by any means, he goes into that mode. The picture symbolises his need to think.
11. Yank like an adolescent adult has the habit of categorizing things according to his believe. Whatever he likes he belongs in that like the ship. And anything he dislikes would not belong in tha.
