Guilt doesn’t always have to become a bad thing. In some cases, it can cause an individuals to see multiple viewpoints and assess what has gone wrong. In the event of the Holocaust, it is important to look back and reflect on the horrific events so that the world may assimilate how it could have been stopped or prevented in the first place. Primary sources of these events expand an individual's mind to fully understand what the atrocious acts. Once the knowledge is obtained, change can be obtained if every individuals makes an effort to. The thought provoking title “Facing History and Ourselves” has a broad audience. It includes what individuals have done throughout history, and it also makes one look at what has been done about it. It forces people to look at the past, no matter how painful, and truly watch and learn from it. When upon first entering the Holocaust unit, people understand the background and the number of individuals killed. However, when digging deeper, people begin to understand the stories and the lived experiences. That is what’s important. “The past is where you learned the lesson. The future is where you apply it” by an anonymous author. This statement couldn’t be more true, since the future all depends on how society takes action today. Ideally, during the Second World War (WWII) the huge majority of citizens in Germany as well as the overpowered European states took no risks. They were spectators, attempting to get going with their lives the best they could. However, they failed to protest against Nazi domination or endanger their welfare, attempting to overcome their novel rulers by assisting the person in need. Nevertheless, after the end of WWII, many asserted not to have recognized the right nature of Nazi maltreatments as well as the Holocaust.

The Holocaust was a very impressionable period of time. It not only got media attention during that time, but movies, books, websites, and other forms of media still remember the Holocaust. In Richard Brietman’s article, “Lasting Effects of the Holocaust,” he reviews two books and one movie that were created to reflect the Holocaust (BREITMAN 11). He notes that the two books are very realistic and give historical facts and references to display the evils that were happening in concentration camps during the Holocaust. This shows that the atrocities that were committed during the Holocaust have not been forgotten. Through historical writings and records, the harshness and evil that created the Holocaust will live through centuries, so that it may not be repeated again (BREITMAN 14).
The Holocaust tends to be a bitter memory and an unpleasant subject to discuss. Although this event took place many years ago, repercussions are still present in the twenty first century. Especially in Germany, the Holocaust not only influences patriotism, but it also influences education and immigration policies. In contrast to other countries where nationalism is common, Germany has been forced to lessen the sense of nationalism in order to dispose false beliefs some individuals have of German racism. By allowing people from other countries to become German citizens, Germany avoids transmitting the sense of being a better and a cleaner race. A further sector influenced by the Holocaust is the education system. Approaches to teach about this event are difficult since the Holocaust is a sensitive issue and continues having vital importance in numerous families. Although the Holocaust continues conveying negative influences, the Holocaust also led to positive medical and technological improvements. In fact, numerous improvements are unknowingly implemented in societies today. Therefore, the Holocaust is one of the most horrific and influencing events in history whose repercussions are still felt in Germany today. However, in spite of the horrific occurrences, the associated medical findings and technological improvements make it intricate to look at the Holocaust as plainly evil. Thus, societies should view the Holocaust with a broader perspective.
Because of the sheer amount of people affected by the Holocaust, it continued having an (Figure 1: Artie in the car with his wife) effect on generations to come. This is clearly displayed in MAUS, when Artie is discussing his views on the Holocaust with his wife (See Fig. 1-2). Artie is evidently guilty about (Figure 2: Artie in the car with his wife) what his parents faced in the Holocaust, saying that he feels “...so inadequate trying to reconstruct a reality that was worse than my darkest dreams” (Spiegelman, 176). This is because he personally lived a relatively easy life, in contrast to his parents. Familial guilt is essential to an educational Holocaust story, because it shows how devastating the horrors that occurred really were, and how they impacted family members of survivors for years to come. Additionally, having familial guilt teaches that events as terrorizing as the Holocaust are things that are carried along with families long after the actual actions are completed. The idea of familial guilt is an important lesson for students to learn, as it serves as a warning against the repetition of these actions. The Holocaust is considered the largest genocide of our entire world, killing more than 600,000,000 Jewish people during the years of 1933-1945. The memories and history that have filled our lives that occurred during the Holocaust are constantly remembered around the world. Many populations today “think” that constant reminders allow for us to become informed and help diminish the hatred for other races still today. These scholars believe that by remembering the Holocaust, you are able to become knowledgeable and learn how to help prevent this from happening again. Since the Holocaust in a sense impacted the entire human race and history of the world, there are traces of the Holocaust all across our culture today. As I continue to remember the victims of this tragic time period I think of all the ways that our world remembers the Holocaust in today’s society. Through spreading the word, works of media and memorials across the world, I am continually reminded of the tragedy that occurred.

The Holocaust, the mass killing of the Jewish people in Europe, is the largest genocide in history to this date. Over the course of the Holocaust nearly six million Jewish people were killed by the Nazi Party and Germany led by Adolf Hitler. There are multiple contributing factors to the Holocaust that made it so large in scope. Historians argue which of these factors were most significant. The most significant contributing factor is the source of the Holocaust, the reason it occurred. This source is Adolf Hitler and his hatred for Jewish people. In comparison to the choices of the Allies to not accept Jewish refugees and to not take direct military action to end the Holocaust, the most significant contributing factor of the Holocaust is that Adolf Hitler was able to easily rise to power with the support of the German people and rule Germany.

No one understands such a dreadful experience as the Holocaust without shifting in the way you were before. In Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel, the author defines his suffering at the hands of Nazis. Taken with his family in 1944, they were directed to Auschwitz to come before the dishonorable selection. There, Elie parted from his mom and sister leaving him with his father who was too busy to spend any time with his son before the camp. Being under the Nazis' control, Elie and his father moved to several camps. The Nazi command “deprived Elie...of the desire to live..., which murdered his God and soul and turned my dreams to dust” (32).
The Holocaust was an extremely horrific period of history. Millions were killed and lost everything, including money, family, and dignity. However, it has taught many lessons. We can study it today to make sure nothing like it ever happens again.
Oral history is based on the process of interviewing those who participated or simply observed historic events in an attempt to reconstruct the past. It is a phenomenon which came about in the latter half of the twentieth century and has challenged existing historical studies by essentially giving a voice to the ‘people without history’ who have previously been overlooked in written works or interpreted differently due to a lack of evidence.
