Athletes who play football share the same goal as athletes who play soccer: score the most goals to win the game. In football, there are two areas on opposite sides of the field where one can score points by bringing the football over the goal line. Soccer shares this same concept by having two nets on opposite sides of the field where one can score a point by kicking the soccer ball into the net. Also, both sports share the concept of having an offense and defense, and both sports each have eleven players on a team on the field at a time. These are only few of many similarities between these two sports, but in actuality, they are significantly different. The rules, rituals, and concepts of both sports distinguish themselves from each other.
Players added many rules that changed the game, and each school interpreted them differently. In 1848, a group of school representatives met at Trinity College in Cambridge and drew up the first set of soccer rules (Brooks Clark, 1993). In 1863, representatives of English soccer clubs founded the English football clubs found the English Football Association.
In the 19th century, soccer started to come to life in America. Some colleges started to play the game in the 1820s, with the first contest taking place at Harvard in 1827. Then, a huge invention took place in 1855. That year, the Charles Goodyear soccer ball was invented. Charles Goodyear created these soccer balls with vulcanized rubber. 12 years later in 1867, soccer took two huge steps. The first standardized soccer rules were published that year. Now, graduates from different schools could play together and had proper rules to follow when playing a game. But later that year, another just as, if not mor...
Soccer was globalized when the FIFA World Cup was established in 1928. The World Cup has been held every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when WWII stopped it from being held (“FIFA World Cup”). Before the World Cup began, the only tournament that was played in international soccer was the Olympics. With these surveys were filled out and rules were discussed, a special committee with President Jules Rimet as the leader began (“History of the World Cup“). Rimet was aided by the secretary of the French football federation, Henri Delaunay. After a remarkable proposal, Fifa’s congress met in Amsterdam on 28 May 1928 and decided to have a world championship organized by Fifa. Hungry, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands immediately put in bids to host this first tournament (“History of the World Cup”). But Uruguay, who was the favorite from the beginning because of its last two gold medals at the Olympics as well as its 100th anniversary of independence, was chosen immediately.
