Our FBLA assignment was Community Service. As our community service, we cleaned up our local park. Many tasks needed to be done, and many students came together to complete them. Our goal was to make our park a better place for everyone in our community. We planned to accomplish everything we could. Our purpose in cleaning our park was to encourage people in our community to visit the park more often, enjoy it, and make it a better place for everyone to come and enjoy. Some of the things we accomplished were:
(1) clean bathrooms
(2) repaint lines on basketball court (3) pick up trash and tree limbs that had fallen
(4) paint the bat holders in the dugouts In order to complete this mission, we had to start with a detailed planning process. First, we had to get permission from the mayor and city council before we could begin on the project. Second, we had to create a long list of all the supplies we were going to need for the project. Third, we had to earn/ collect money from the fellow members of the group ,so we could buy the products we needed. The community park bathrooms were a complete catastrophe. The men’s restroom had urine all over the walls, which made it smell horrendous. The floors were a mess, and had dirt all over them from the dirt being tracked in. So, to resolve this, we swept and mopped the dirty, nasty, smelly floors. One of the toilet seats was very unstable. As a solution, we tightened the screws that holds the toilet seats down. After we fixed the toilet seat, we cleaned them, and made them look immaculate. Next, we had to repair the sinks. The sinks had constant dripping pipes. We discovered the problem and addressed the matter hastily. We also took out the trash that was collected in the bathroom trash cans. We also added air fresheners to make the bathrooms smell
I am a 17 year old senior in high school and was asked to participate in creating and executing a community service project. My first reaction is to talk to my mother, she is very involved in the community and would have some good ideas. The one that stood out to me was doing a coat drive! Last year we did a small one that ended up providing mostly adult women’s coats. This year an organization that I’ve been a part of for four years, HOSA, is doing a coat drive and I’ve asked if I could piggy back on their project. The person in charge of the coat drive is Bailey Clark, she is the current president of HOSA. HOSA is a great organization that prepares high school students for working in the medical community after graduating.
I had learned lots of new things this year and especially this semester in U.S. History Since 1877. This history course required all students to complete twenty hours of service learning or to write a term paper. After considering the two options, I decided to give the service learning a chance because I thought it would be an interesting experience. There were a variety of projects to choose from, but I felt that the Sustainability Project was the right fit for me.
A definitive part of my individuality is my level of intelligence. I’ve always been encouraged and driven to challenge my intellect through various opportunities in my community. Although my endeavors whether academic or artistic have provided both beneficial and detrimental outcomes in my life, I’ve been able to gain the greatest amount of esteem from my commitment to voluntary civic service. In the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program as a part of eligibility for diploma status, candidates are required to submit 200 CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service) hours performing duties that meet the criteria for each category. At first I viewed the task as your stereo-typical student with disdain and contempt for the seemingly daunting tasks. However, I never expected to have gained a true introspect and regard from my experiences in service. The community should encourage continued community service from college students that receive scholarships and or some type of financial aid to volunteer, with the existing programs. This could increase the amount of people available to these after school and summer programs, while saving the city some money. This could prove to be a major step in continuing to improve the city and make it a desired place to live and prosper.
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
My favorite service project was my silver award for girl scouts. Before Jamie Lince, Faith Brown, and I did the silver award the hoophouse by the elementary school was very rundown. There were holes in the plastic, weeds in the beds, and the wood chips in the aisles were worn down. The hoophouse couldn’t be used. We wanted to fix that problem. First we applied for grants. I never knew how many steps or how much time this would take. It really taught me how to handle deadlines so things get turned in on time. It also taught me that there are people that want to support you, and you just need to find them. The two grants that we received were a Lowes grant for fifteen-hundred dollars and a seed grant from Van Atta’s. The second step was to get people to help weed out the beds so we could plant the seeds we got from the grant. This took a few hours and a lot of people from the community showed up to help. The Lowes grant was used for the plastic that goes on the outside of the hoophouse and new wood chips for the aisles in the hoophouse. We had to have the help of Mr. Montry who makes hoop house...
It was late October, as we were adjusting to our new roles; we were given a compelling project called Kids against Hunger. This project required a vast amount of preparation and organization. The group should come up with a list of tasks that need to be completed to lead to project completion. Assign tasks amongst the group, with this idea in mind: tasks are one thing that can be done by one person, not a major responsibility or series of tasks that complete a goal. The tasks should be completed by everyone, then put together into a whole to meet the goal.
