Before examining Eysencks approach to understanding personality, we need to define what personality is.
Dictionary definition (1) Personality – the sum of all the behavioral and mental characteristics by means of which an individual is recognised as being unique.
What is meant by personality? It is the inner quality of a person, the sum of their life experiences, the way the environment affects a persons’ outlook and a conscious choice. Personality is not better or worse than any other person’s. Scientifically, we all have a personality and each on is different. Definitions of personality conventionally excludes physical differences such as height or strength, although these obviously affect personality.
Eysencks personality model is a trait-based approach. A trait is a ‘characteristic feature or quality distinguishing a person or thing’. (2) Eysenck was using an approach, which was concerned about what personality is like, rather than speculating on ‘underlying psychological mechanisms’. (3)
Eysenck believed that personality is influenced by a combination of genetics, biological factors and environment. Day to day when we describe peoples personalities, we refer to terms such as kind, funny, outgoing and worriers etc. these are known as trait terms and Eysenck asserts that we have some of these traits from birth. Gordon Allport (1961) identifies no less than 18, 000 trait terms in literature, of which 4,500 are in common use. (4) It is suggested that many traits may simply be an aspect of a core attribute. For example, someone who appears nervous, defensive and introvert may be showing facets of a core problem; which is anxiety. If one starts to seek out these core attributes, it is said they are adopting a parsimonious approach. A parsimonious approach is one in which deserved facts are accounted for, ‘in terms of the smallest possible number of underlying variables’. (5) The parsimonious approach has been traced back to Hippocrates and Galen.
W.B. Wundt (1832-1920); a founding father of modern psychology; replaced the four basic personality types as put forward by Galen; namely: -
Melancholic Sad and Depressed
Phlegmatic Calm and Stable
Choleric Irascible and Quick Tempered
Sanguine Cheerful and Optimistic
With two of these traits being strong Vs weak and volatile Vs stable; individuals being placed at various points on this continuum.
Eysenck was one psychologist who developed Wundt’s ideas and doing so on a basis of strong research evidence. In common with Wundt, Eysenck recognised two main personality traits but felt they would be more aptly described by the terms Extroversion-Introversion (E-Dimension), Neuroticism-Stability (N-Dimension), later adding a third High Psychoticism-Low Psychoticism (P-Dimension).
Even though we have some evidence to back the theories of the Salem witch trials up, the most logical theory is that the people of Salem were all just putting on an act. Everyone had a motive to either hurt someone they despise or have feuds with, or just to save themselves. The other theories can be backed up just as well. But everyone has their own opinion. We may never know the true cause of the Salem Witch Trials.
The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 were caused by a number of different reasons. The trials were caused by the fear of witchcraft and the tensions in the town and village.
Many psychologists throughout many years present theoretical approaches in an attempt to understand personality. Hans Eysenck’s approach of personality differed from that of Sigmund Freud and his psychoanalytical theory of personality. Eysenck’s theory of personality relies on the scientific basis of biology in explaining human personality. Although Freud’s theories are intriguing to an open mind, Eysenck’s approach made measurable scientific sense. He relied on the use of trait and factor analysis, which is a statistical method. Freud relied on faith and his personal opinions based on observational research to reach the assumptions that set forth his theories (Feist & Feist, 2009). Eysenck and Freud did not agree on anything about understanding how and why the mind operates the way, it does.
Eysenck ' identify three dimensions of personality which are extraversion, neuroticism and psychoticism (McLeod, 2014). He came up with this theory while working in Maudskey psychiatric hospital in London. He was making "assessments of each patient before their mental disorders where diagnosed by a psychiatrist. He would ask questions too soldiers who were being treated for neurotic disorders. His technique is called the factor analysis. The factors are grouped into dimensions. The two dimensions are introversion and extraversion, neuroticism and stability which are also called the second order personality traits. The extraverts are sociable and crave excitement and change, and thus can become bored easily they tend to be carefree optimistic and impulsive"(McLeod, 2014). Introverts are "reserved planned actions and control their emotions. They tend to be seriously reliable and pessimistic"(McLeod, 2014). Neurotics and stables tend to be anxious worrying and moody. They are overly emotional and find it difficult to calm down one upset (). Stables are "emotionally calm unreactive and unworried. In 1966 Eysencks that is another trade called psychoticism. This trait exhibits "a lack of empathy, is cruel, a loner, aggressive and troublesome" McLeod, 2014 (McLeod,
Terror raged through Salem Village in 1692, causing the citizens to accuse and execute each other because of suspected witchcraft. Twenty-five people died and many more were arrested as a result of the Salem witch trials, a series of court cases regarding the 131 people accused of witchcraft (Foulds 258). Trouble first started when two girls acted so strangely that people had no doubts that it was the result of witchcraft. Soon, they considered no one safe because anyone might be a witch, or a witch may be tormenting them. The afflicted girls’ mysterious behavior activated a hysterical fear of witches, causing the Salem witch trials.
Women still get paid 77 cents to every dollar that a man makes. This not only perpetuates sexism in an extremely obvious way, it is also one of the most harmful. While being catcalled, or subtly put down can be a detriment to women’s psyche, the wage gap is harmful to a women’s physical and emotional well being. Most people say that in order to make a big career change, the person changing jobs should have enough money saved to live on for a full year. This is a pretty logical idea, however, this is something that is much easier for men to accomplish, given that they are paid a higher wage. They have the ability to put money away, whereas it is more likely that a women is going to have to spend all her wages just on living. She won’t be able to leave a job, even if she hates it, simply because she can not afford to. A man with her same qualifications may not have to worry about this due to the fact that he has on average 23 more cents per every dollar, than she does. This to me seems like the root of sexism, and one of the first things we as a society needs to fix in order to help woman feel more equal in the world.
An individual’s behaviour may differ depending on the circumstances they are in though there are definite signs of repetitive behaviour when placed in majority of the situations. These characteristics are known as traits which make up the personality of each person (Engler, 2014). Personality theorists do not have a mutual agreement on how the term personality should be used. They each have their definition of personality thus providing a large number of diverse personality theories (Engler, 2014). For example, Eysenck (1970) defined personality as a relatively permanent and consistent composition of an individual’s disposition that in turn establishes how the person adjusts to their
The Salem Witch Trial isn’t your average historical event. You don’t just learn why it happened, unlike other events in the history of our nation. The Salem Witch Trials are different. There are many different reasons to blame for the execution of 20 people and the death of 4 prisoners, a total of 24 innocent people. (Salem Court Records) The role that had the biggest effect on the witch trials was the Puritan religion and the women who’d had enough of their lives. The Salem Info Page talks about Betty Paris and Abigail Williams. These two girls who were the ones who started it all. Both would sneak away from their chores to listen to a lady named Tituba. Tituba would tell them about things like fortune telling. Skip a few weeks later, and Abigail and Betty started acting weird, suddenly yelling at random moments and going into trance-like states of mind. Samuel could no longer keep it a secret and took Betty to a doctor, who then said she was being the victim of
Raymond B. Cattell (1906-1998) studied the personality traits of large groups of people, calling the visible features of their personalities “surface traits.” During his studies, Cattell observed that certain “surface traits” would appear simultaneously in individuals. When Cattell noticed this trend occurring frequently he renamed the group of “surface traits” “source traits”. At the conclusion of his research Cattell identified sixteen “source traits.”
Personality can be defined as the ways a person acts and thinks. The characteristics that make up how a person acts and thinks are called personality traits. Personality traits are the building blocks that make up a person’s personality, and the varied combination of traits is what make each person so unique.
Personality is a branch of scientific discipline that studies temperament and its variation among people. It is a dynamic and a set of characteristics possessed by their atmosphere, cognitions, emotions, motivations and behaviours in various things. Personality conjointly refers to the pattern of thoughts, feelings, social adjustments and behaviour consistently exhibited over time that powerfully influences one’s exceptions, self-perceptions, values and attitudes. It also predicts human reactions to different folks, problems and stress.
Personality is massive part of an individual’s identity. Our personalities dictate our patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. An individual’s personality exposes them to predispositions and habits that influence their actions and lives. Early on, personality assessments consisted of physical features ranging from head shape and facial characteristics to body type. In today’s world, personality assessments are mainly based around traits. Traits are simply descriptions of one’s habitual patterns of behavior, thought and emotion. The most popular personality assessment is the Five-Factor Model, also known as The Big Five. This model allows us to describe people based on the five main traits/dimensions. These traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. Each of these five traits measures a different aspect of one’s personality. Extraversion is based on one’s level of engagement with the world,

As you get older, from the day of your birth, til the day you become deceased, your personality is always a part of you. Whether it is how others perceive you to even how you perceive yourself. Personality is defined as a combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's unique character. It can be expressed as an adjective when describing a person but in the world of psychology, your personality shows the deeper layers to your unique life. I have twenty randomly shuffled papers that people have written down what the first thing is that they think of when they think of me.
