?Beauty is in the eye of the beholder? is one of the most commonly known proverbs. In the Twilight Zone?s short film, ?Eye of the Beholder? that same proverb is used as a metaphor to demonstrate how beauty and acceptance are illustrated in the real world. The film tells the story of a woman whose hideously deformed face has made her an outcast all of her life. Now she faces her nearly a dozen and final operation for a last chance to look normal with the help of unseen surgeons. First, in the ?Eye of the Beholder? we see the bandaged woman?s craving for normality. She is constantly haunted by the memory of a child screaming because of her physical deformed appearance. We are also reminded that those who look ?different? will be sent of to an isolated place with others of the same ?disability.? With that being said a sense of Nazism idealistic society comes to mind. For example, the Nazi?s sent those who looks different than the normal beautiful blued eyed, blond Germans, to a concentration camp. Moreover, the woman in the ?eye of the Beholder? not only wanted beauty but she felt the need for acceptance. She was denied this when she was taken to a disability camp. It?s amazing how in the movie, people were separated and treated unequally because of their physical appearances, and as result, they could not share the same society. This is in fact is a metaphor for how discrimination was once in extreme existence in this society. For example, African Americans once had to use: different bathrooms, water fountains, and were even segregated to non-white school. They were even isolated to the worse parts of the cities. In conclusion, in the Twilight Zone?s short film, ?Eye of the Beholder? the themes of beauty and acceptance are used as a metaphor for the
The engineers in Visit Sunny Chernobyl created a new frontier past the safety zone because they want to test the limits of the reactor. What the scientists didn’t account for is that fact that the reactors already had the potential of a dangerous chain reaction. (Blackwell 6) Consequently, their boundary destroying led to catastrophic consequences and the total annihilation of a land area because of massive radiation. Blackwell thought Chernobyl was so horrific he expressed that no one should visit without a “working understanding of radiation and how it’s measured” (Blackwell 7). These are some horrific consequences that followed from surpassing the
In the story, H-G men apply handicaps such as masks, as well as bulky bags on certain individuals who were ‘above average.’ Everyone within this society has to deal with performing just like others and walking past other hideous people. Individuals who were handicapped were held back from their intelligence, creativity, and most importantly from their beauty, making everyone, no smarter, stronger, quicker, unable to see a free and graceful gesture, or be able to see a beautiful face. “‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ said the ballerina, reading the bulletin. She must have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was hideous. And it was easy to see that she was the strongest and most graceful of all the dancers, for her handicap bags were as big as those worn by two-hundred pound men.” (Vonnegut, p.103/par. 39). In the story, a ballerina, burdened with weights as well as a mask, had to perform on stage, stripped off from her gorgeous face and graceful dancing skills, making her look like an embarrassment. Though, it was obvious that she was better than all the other dancers, which clearly shows that a society that values equality leads to lack of beauty.
The meltdown of Chernobyl's fourth reactor was the result of a series of errors in the reactor design, operations, and a failure to follow established safety protocols. These human errors resulted in more than 400 times the radioactivity of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb being released into the environment (Salge & Milling, 2006). This caused a massive economic, environmental, and human toll to the region. Improved reactor design and proper adherence to safety procedures could have prevented this disaster.
A practicing sociologist has the gift of being able to recognize things that many people spend their entire life in ignorance of. These “things” are what construct an individual person’s sense of reality are ideas that very often differ culture to culture. To further explain this meaning, a person can consider the idea of thunder. In a Westernized culture, many people will hear the loud noise and automatically associate it with a storm. However, in other cultures some people may immediately think that their gods are angry with them and thus cause the sounds in a fit of rage. The interesting thing about this is that both ideas are a direct result of the culture and language in which the individual was raised or adapted into. Their individual

You can truly relate to this story. These characters are not seen just as heroic, but human. You see jealousy between women because of looks, much like we see today. Women, as sad as it is, really can be quite shallow when it comes to physical appearance. We see it all over the media with women paying thousands of dollars for cosmetic surgery so they can "feel better about themselves", but really, they are just trying to win some type of competition.
One of the things that some of the people are robbed of is their beauty. An example of this would be how the dancers in the story have to hide their beauty behind ugly masks. “... so that no one, seeing a free and graceful gesture or a pretty face, would feel like something the cat drug in.”(300) This is exactly how they’re society stripped the dancers and everyone else who is beautiful or their beauty. There is no excuse to make someone wear a hideous mask because they are beautiful.
The novel not only explores racial prejudice, but also prejudice against gender and social status. Maudie is a victim of prejudice agains...
By dissecting the film, the director, Jennie Livingston's methodology and the audience's perceived response I believe we can easily ignore a different and more positive way of understanding the film despite the many flaws easy for feminist minds to criticize. This is in no way saying that these critiques are not valid, or that it is not beneficial to look at works of any form through the many and various feminist lenses.
On April 26, 1986, a reactor in the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine exploded and released 126 different types of radiation into the atmosphere. On April 25, the reactor which later exploded was shut down for maintenance. At the same time, machine operators were planning a test on the nuclear turbines located in the power plant. During this test, the operators turned off several safety systems which led to this major disaster. While testing the reactor, the power was increased, water flow into steam drums decreased, and the power rapidly increased. Because the emergency and safety systems were turned off, the reactor exploded and caused a horrible problem to deal with.
"The tops are leaping off the reactor lip" this was the first warning which the control room received before the destructive explosion in Chernobyl that occurred at 1:23 AM local time. Twenty three minute after the warning in the morning of 26 April 1989, the reactor exploded. The Chernobyl nuclear accident was an unexpected catastrophe that can happen in the history of producing nuclear power. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) defined a nuclear accident as an accident that includes any activities that lead to the release of radioactive material and causes significant consequences. The location of Chernobyl city is in the north of Ukraine near the Belarus border. That nuclear accident happened when in reactor number 4 in the Chernobyl nuclear power in the Soviet Union exploded. Because of that extreme explosion, the radioactive emissions dispensed into the environment and caused immediate deaths, illnesses and many health problems. World Health Association (2013) reports that during the accident, one person died immediately and another one died in the hospital due to the harmful injuries he received. Health World Organization (WHO) (2006) also reports that a few weeks after the disaster 28 people died because of the Acute Radiation Sickness(ARS). The Chernobyl nuclear accident is one of the major disasters in the history of nuclear power which had many serious effects on humans and the environment.
This idea is marxism. Without social class structure, failure is evident as seen with El Salvador and their struggle with a civil war and an unstable society. El Salvador’s economy was practically all agriculture and the labor force was formed by people working to harvest coffee beans. As modernization is reached there isn’t as big of a need for such laborers. With the way El Salvador operated with such a large population being laborers, there was no middle class. Like I stated before, without a middle class there is no democracy. The power lies solely in the hands of the
...e ability to achieve anything in life. Hopefully, readers would learn from this novel that beauty is not the most important aspect in life. Society today emphasizes the beauty of one's outer facade. The external appearance of a person is the first thing that is noticed. People should look for a person's inner beauty and love the person for the beauty inside. Beauty, a powerful aspect of life, can draw attention but at the same time it can hide things that one does not want disclosed. Beauty can be used in a variety of ways to affect one's status in culture, politics, and society. Beauty most certainly should not be used to excuse punishment for bad deeds. Beauty is associated with goodness, but that it is not always the case. This story describes how the external attractiveness of a person can influence people's behavior and can corrupt their inner beauty.
Kant’s assertion that one must tell the truth no matter the consequences comes from the moral principle of the categorical imperative. Categorical imperatives are absolute commands that we ought to follow, period. Kant believed that lying fell under
Following the accident there in 1986, Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and the nearby city of Prypiat, were flooded with deadly radiation. 56 people lost their lives from the accident, the majority due to the effects of the radiation, and Prypiat was evacuated thirty-six hours after the accident.
