Extracurricular Activities
Research was performed on the claim of fact that students involved in extracurricular activities receive higher grades than those not involved in activities. This topic was studied because high school budgets are meager, and the administrations of these schools want to spend the money efficiently. Consequently, funding for extracurricular activities may be decreased. This report examines the correlation between extracurricular activities and academic performance.
Scope
The scope of the investigation only includes high school students and the relationship between their involvement in activities and their academic performance. Some collegiate level studies were used since the benefits of extracurricular activities in high school and college are the same.
Methods
Three experts in different fields that have knowledge of this area of research were interviewed. Laura Bestler, assistant director of student activities at the Iowa State University Student Activities Center, was interviewed since she is an expert on the activities that take place on the Iowa State campus and the benefits students attain by becoming involved in activities. Matt Craft, president of the Government of the Student Body at Iowa State University, was also interviewed because the Government of the Student Body, or GSB, supports and funds many campus activities. The intention of this component of the research was to discover why the GSB finds extracurricular activities so beneficial that they choose to financially support them. Chris McCandless’s decision to uproot his life and hitchhike to Alaska has encouraged other young adults to chase their dreams. Neal Karlinksy illustrates the love Chris had for nature in the passage, “He was intoxicated by the nature and the idea of a great Alasican adventure-to survive in the bush totally alone.” This passage shows appreciation for the significance of following ones dreams. Even with all that Chris had accomplished he knew that something was missing and this resonated deeply in his soul. It is refreshing to discover that not all young people are focused on materialistic success. Neal Karlinsky demonstrates this in the quotation, “Today, young idealistic pilgrims post their adventures on YouTube as they follow in the footsteps of Alexander Supertramp and visit the now famous “ magic bus” deep in the Alaskan interior.” This passage describes how some young people use Chris’ journey as a catalyst to discover their own identity and purpose as they travel to Alaska also.

The Dome of the Rock owns an egg shaped dome covered with a gold colored material. It is an octagonal building with details designs all around the entire exterior of the building. It seems like the building focuses more on symmetry and repetition because we see the shapes and details similarly, yet beautifully made. Hagia Sophia’s dome, on the other hand, is a rounded shape with 4 towers on 4 sides with the same gray colored points. Unlike the Dome of the Rock, the building’s details focuses more on the interior. It has many windows and openings that allow the light to come through them, giving really natural feelings inside, while Dome of the Rock use more color on their designs such as yellow, blue, as well as green. It is a well known fact that a good quality sample is necessary to get realistic soil parameters. Basically, preserving soil natural structure and stress condition in the laboratory sample determine the quality of soil parameters. However, many researchers pointed out that it is impossible to retain original soil condition even though we use so-called high quality sampler and same in-situ effective stress condition during the laboratory testing. On the other hand, many researchers have tried to overcome such problem of soil disturbance by introducing several methods of correcting soil parameters for poor quality sample. Teaching is much more than just work inside of a classroom; it is our job as a teacher to get to know our students, on a personal level, inside and out of school. Do extra-curricular activities have a positive or negative effect on a student’s academic performance? If they do, then why do schools take activities away from students at the first sign of academic troubles? If they are scientifically proven to be positive, then why are they not curricular rather than extra curricular? There are numerous influences that impact the academic performance of a student other than after school activities. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
Extracurricular activities have proven to be advantageous toward young athletes in the educational system. Research has verified that children who participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to drop out of school. Children who are at risk of failing have also been proven to benefit from extracurricular activities. One study done in 1997 examined the correlation connecting extracurricular activities and early dropout rates. Another study carried out in 2003 found that participation in one of the five areas of extracurricular activities had drastically lower dropout rates than those who did not participate in any activities at all. Athletes were the only one of the five categories that had noticeably lower dropout rates than students who did not participate. While they all had low dropout rates, athletics seemed most successful. In agreement, a study done in 2011 also found that extracurricular activities have an effect on dropout rates. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the dropout rate for 16 to 24 year olds declined from 12 percent in 1990 to 7 percent in 2011.
Are extra-curricular and co-curricular activities needed in a school environment? Do they serve any purpose in the learning spectrum of school? Many individuals believe school is a place strictly for learning, nothing more. Yet, they have an abundance of different sports and activities offered. These activities are financed by public schools and are offered as something else to engage in.
