External Conflict In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Some examples of internal conflict can be when at the end of the story George is about to kill Lennie, when he was pointing the gun at Lennie head he was having a trouble time handling the gun and brought the gun back down when he was about to shoot him, it’s like that there is voices saying one to kill him, or two to don’t shoot and think of what George was doing. Another Example would be when Lennie kills Curley’s wife and runs back to the brush, he starts to see things such as his Aunt Clara and the Gigantic rabbit, as if the voices in his head start to make images of these two visitors to say all the stuff of all the awful stuff he has done and how they made Georges life painful. One more example would be when Candy comes to the point

to choose if he should shoot his own dog or Carlson should shoot the dog. This part played with his mind because it is like one side of his mind is saying that if he was going to shoot the dog he wouldn’t be able to live with himself knowing that he killed his own dog, and should’ve let Carlson shot it.
This story also had Some external conflict, and some of these examples can be Crooks vs everyone at the bunkhouse, which is most likely man vs society.

The reason is because since he is black, he is not really aloud to be with anyone that has a different color skin, reason could be that he is living in a barn and not living in the bunkhouse where everyone else is. Another example can be Curley vs Lennie, which is most likely man vs society. The reason is because in the middle of the story both of the characters end up getting into a fight, not just that but Curley hates people that are bigger than him, and Lennie is bigger and taller him, but Lennie had no sort of hate towards Curly, but ever since they first met they had always been

enemies.
Consider that Lennie is the antagonist of the story. One more example would be Lennie vs nature. The reason could be that what George said about him being out at the mountains on his own is not a good idea because the nature in the outside world can be dangerous with barely any food and shelter which can lead to death. Another example could be that he is always killing a small animal, such as the mouse at the beginning and the pup near the end of the story, even though their animals, I believe that animals are a part of nature which is why I believe that this external conflict is man vs nature
I believe Lennie is considered the antagonist of the story is because that Lennie is always leading to trouble from the beginning to the end of the story.

From the beginning of the story George and Lennie had to flee from weed because of Lennie's actions of him ripping a girls dress when he was touching a girls dress inappropriately, in which led to all men running them out of weed. At the end of the story he kinda did the same thing with Curley’s wife but worst, in which ends up to Lennie killing Curley’s wife and him running back to the brush. Another reason could be that whenever he gets to physical contact to anyone or anything, it leads to someone always getting into trouble or lead to someone or something being severely injured. Even though Lennie doesn’t mean to hurt anyone, it’s just that since he is mostly a kid inside a adults body, it’s just that he has no self control of his crazy strength which is how Lennie accidentally kills the mouse for petting to hard, and when he shook Curley’s wife in which lead to her neck being

broken.
In stories there are always characterizations, such as indirect and direct characterization. One example of direct characterization would be Lennie, Lennie always accidentally hurts someone, or even killing someone, such as when he was stroking the mouse he accidentally killed it with his hands, another example would be when he caught Curley’s fist and ended up crushing his hand. This shows that Lennie is a really strong person but doesn’t have any control of it. Another example of direct characterization would be Curley, The way how he talks aggressive to Lennie since he is bigger and taller, another example would be when I believe Curley was looking for his wife, when he got back to the bunkhouse he was also aggressive to slim and other people at the bunkhouse. It shows that Curley is a really angry person and aggressive person. One more example would be Curley’s wife, when she is not around Curley she is always trying to talk to the other guys around the bunkhouse but always get rejected. This shows that Curley’s wife is a lonely person, which is the reason why she is always trying to find someone to talk to.
Characterization doesn’t only have direct characterization, characterization also has indirect characterization. An example would be Lennie, When Lennie is getting attacked by Curley, he starts to cry in fear and when he finally fights back he is still to weep. This indirectly describes Lennie's terror. Another example would be Curley, when he is back at the bunkhouse after looking for his wife, he glances at Lennie to see that he is laughing, and he is thinking that he is laughing at him, in which led to him snapping at Lennie, which ended up to him throwing punches at Lennie. This indirectly describes Curley’s anger. One more example would be George, at the end of the story when he is about to kill Lennie, when he put the trigger to his head, his hands are shaking, and then eventually puts the gun down. This indirectly shows George’s nervousness and some sort of fear of what he is about to do
