Childhood is a time in everybody’s life. And everyone has their own unique definition of it. But in general, childhood is a time for kids to play and explore. Not to be held back for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week in a small classroom. Therefore, it is unjust for students to elementary and middle schools to be required to attend school for more than 5 hrs. Here are some definitions to clarify these statements: Elementary school: Kindergarten through fifth grade, Middle School: Grades 6 through eight. Explore: to travel in or through an unfamiliar area in order to familiarize oneself with it, Play: to engage in an activity for enjoyment, childhood: the state of being a child.

Kids are already stretched to unhealthy breaking points with lots of homework, extracurricular activities, and long nights. According to NeaToday.org, a recent survey in 2016 shows that kids believe that doing a lot of activities and taking harder classes are the ticket to success. This has led students to be sleep-deprived, unhealthy, and disengaged in class. According to Time Magazine, a study in Spring 2017 shows that the average amount of homework in the past decade has been increasing. An article from the National Education Association puts a spotlight on this topic. Their study shows that these increased amounts of homework have been occurring mostly in the lower grades. Teachers give students homework that sometimes takes hours to complete and is expected to be finished in one or two days. All while the student is expected to get at least 10 hours of sleep. According to scienceleadership.org, these large amounts of homework can lead to sleep deprivation. According to psychologist Robert Leahy, school these days can get a little tough– especially when most students’ first response to a heavy backpack full of homework is to worry over whether or not it can be done. In the past decade, Leahy and other psychologists have noticed a steady nationwide increase in the amount of stress caused by schoolwork among high school students (Slate Magazine). What does this mean for tomorrow’s leaders and future generations of dignitaries? Scientists have concluded that sleep deprivation, long-term health problems, and declining overall academic achievement are lasting effects of homework-related stress on the average student, and they should not be ignored.
Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. These problems include substance abuse, becoming a high school dropout, and possibly death by suicide. So why risk a student’s life for a few homework
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.

Childhood is the most precious time of a person’s life, full of new discoveries and observations about the world around them. Children learn to become independent and take care of themselves. Their curious eyes explore everything around them and they absorb knowledge from their parents and their teachers. They also learn to make friends and learn how to share with one another. As children get older, they learn how to bond with others in school and become more involved with sports and learning how to be in a group setting. Middle childhood is when children are between the ages of 6 to 12 years of age. They are learning the foundations of forming friendships, learning morals, and being active members at school and at home. During middle childhood, children go through physical, emotional, cognitive, and affective changes that help them define themselves as individuals and how parents can promote their child’s growth and development during this stage of life.
Finally, the more homework and activities could lead to a later bedtime meaning less sleep. After school activities on top of pounds of homework will eventually become to much to handle.
In the United States, school is mandatory for students to attend first through twelfth grade. This is 12 years of our lives, that we spend approximately six hours, five days per week, for about nine months, with the occasional holiday breaks. This is great amount of our youth spent at school. As we mature throughout the years, we grow into different types of students. We each have unique personalities, opinions, strengths, and weaknesses that influence who we are.

She contemplates that such a heavy load can result in potential drawbacks to the students. Hours of homework a night plus a full day of school can be just as much work as an adult at a full-time job. She believes students should enjoy their childhood, as short as it already is. MagnetMom complains about how her daughter’s homework takes away her beneficial sleep. Childhood and adulthood are two different periods of one’s lifetime but equally important. Childhood is the time in everybody’s life when they are growing up to be an adult. This is when they are being considered babies because of their youthfulness and innocence. Adulthood is the period of time where everybody is considered “grown up,” usually they begin to grow up around the ages of eighteen or twenty-one years old but they do remain to develop during this time. However, in some different backgrounds, not everybody is not fully adults until they become independent with freedom, responsible for their own actions, and able to participate as an adult within society. Although childhood and adulthood are both beneficial to our lives, both periods share some attributes such as independence, responsibility, and innocence that play distinctive roles in our development.
