The expression of emotions is a natural human behavior, exhibited from birth until death. Emotions give a name to the multitude of feelings and moods that a human being will experience throughout their life. Why then, does society discourage this expression? Especially for boys, the language surrounding the expression of emotion is extremely negative: “Boys don’t cry,” “Man up,” and “Grow a pair” are just some of the phrases that have traditionally been commonplace when raising young men. Even young girls are subject to harmful opinions regarding the expression of emotions, commonly being dismissed as “melodramatic” or “overemotional.” Only recently have the academic and societal spheres begun to challenge these everyday beliefs. In short, emotionally intelligent individuals are able to recognize, express, understand, control, and eventually learn from their feelings. In infants, the expression of emotion comes naturally: babies cry to show pain, hunger, exhaustion, and frustration. As a child grows older, adults and caregivers have the immense responsibility to model and teach the recognition, understanding, and control of emotion. Children are fierce imitators who are constantly observing and emulating the actions of those around them. Parents and early childhood teachers must not only model appropriate expressions of emotion, but also allow for diverse techniques for children to express their own feelings of joy, fear, anger, and sadness (among many others). More importantly, it is crucial that schools and communities offer ways for students to label and analyze the emotions that they are feeling. Putting a name to the emotion allows for individuals to speak about how they are feeling, why they are feeling that way, and most importantly: what can be done to improve their emotional state. For some students, “counting to ten” may be all it takes to begin this process. Others will need more support from social workers or school psychologists. Parents and teachers have an obligation to provide safe and open spaces for children to work through emotions in a productive and positive way. An article entitled “How Boys Become Men,” written by Jon Katz was originally published in January, 1993 in Glamour, a magazine for young women. This article details the process of a boy growing into a man and mainly focus on the lesson boys learn that effect their adult lives. These lessons are about how to hold back emotions and never appeared sensitive. The author includes examples of his own experiences as a boy to convey to the reader the challenges of growing into a man. Through the various stories of young boys, the author is trying to prove that the men are insensitive because they had to learn to hide their feelings during the stage of growing up with other boys. The purpose of the author is to explain the women of the world, why men appear to be emotionalist and “macho.” The author’s main idea of this article is to explain why men are insensitive and to help women understand why men sometimes seem “remote” and “uncommunicative.”
In this quote written by Miriam Adeney, the author talks about how the feeling of homeliness is hard to achieve once a person travels and gets to meet new people; since that person has started building relationships with them, whether as a friend, a family member, a significant other, or someone who has meaning to their life. When the bonds are created with these new people, the emotion love is starting to develop. As well as a homely feeling is created within these tight bonds causing emotions to override the ability for one to reason. Children have a way of not being able to express themselves fully so being able to help them understand their emotions. Throughout childhood and our adolescent years, we learn to control our emotions, eventually gaining an understanding of how and when it is appropriate to express or suppress those emotions. This technique is referred to as emotional regulation or effortful control and is considered a lifelong endeavor, with early childhood being a crucial time for development (Berger. 2014, p.210) According to Berger, by age 6 signs of emotional regulation are evident with most children being able to become upset or angry without emotional outburst or proud without being narcissistic (Gross,2014; Lewis,2013). Emotional control and delayed gratification are developed using motivation either intrinsic (the joy felt within after achieving something) or extrinsic (the gratification felt after receiving praise or acknowledgment from outside sources) (Berger. 2014, p.214). Unlike intrinsic motivation, because extrinsic motivation requires outside reinforcements to be achieved, once the extrinsic reward stops, so does the behavior; unless it becomes habitual due to intrinsic gratification (Berger,2014, p.214).
