The poem exposure was written by Wilfred Owen in the winter of 1917, it has all the hard ships of the soldiers and how they felt during the war in horrific conditions that led the soldiers to death. Starting with the first stanza Owen uses different types of techniques to influence the reader about world war one conditions. “Our brains ache” is a short sentence to open with, emphasizes that statement, hyperbole and sets tone for the poem. The quotation which illustrates how Owen and the soldiers felt during the war “Our brains ache, in the merciless iced east winds that knive us...” this this quotation illustrates the hard ships of the soldiers and how they felt. “Winds knive us” is a personification, aggressive metaphor of the weather attacking them. Ellipses in the quotation slows the rhythm down, creates space, pause and waiting, reflecting the content. The whole stanza talks about the soldiers, and the weather conditions, the stanza creates a sense of unbearable and horrendous sites, as the following quotation talks about the effects on soldiers from things around them, “Wearied we keep awake” the use of alliteration, emphasizes the desperation to stay awake despite the tedium also causes the reader to reflect on what is being said. The soldiers have to stay awake during the war and there is no sleep for them. “But nothing happens” is repeated four times in the poem, it highlights the boredom and tedium of the reality. This is worse, in many respects, than fear of fighting.

Wilfred Owen is trying to tell the reader that the soldiers have to go through the horrific battle of war again and again, hour after hour. The soldiers have no time to relax which means nature has left the soldiers and they can’t have any freedom like before. Wilfred Owen has been through this himself and he has been in great danger if dieing and he did just after war ended. Owen tells the reader that once you join the army/war you can’t go back you have to fight day and night for you country there is no sleep and only time you will feel relaxed or free from war is when you die. He is telling us all wars are the same. They are endless.

Just as the poem is written in a rhyme and rhythm that makes poetry easy to follow, the vivid imagery helps one to picture more easily what is going on in the poem. Owen brilliantly chooses words and phrases that illuminate the scene, making the reader feel as if he is physically in the scene along with the characters. For example, Owen describes that the Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots/ But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;/ Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots/ Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind (Gioia 782). Using references and quotes from three wartime poems I will explain what they tell us about wartime life and the thoughts and feelings of civilians and soldiers. I will also clarify how the poets communicate emotional and moving responses to the disturbing war. The three poems that will be analysed are: · Route March Rest - by Vernon Scannell, · Night Raid - by Desmond Hawkins, · The Battle - by Louis Simpson. I have selected these poems because they contain both similarity and contrast. These aspects are important in order to produce a high-quality essay as they provide a more balanced view of the poems.
Fade is an interesting novel, and can be quite confusing at times. The book starts off with the main character, Paul Moreaux living in his hometown “Frenchtown” he always called it, in Massachusetts. The book takes place somewhere in the 1920’s. Paul lives a normal but poor life, when he finds out that he has the ability to “fade”, which is the ability to disappear or become invisible. The ability is passed on from an uncle in the family to a nephew, and Paul’s uncle Abelard teaches it to him. Once he starts to use this new ability, bad things start to happen. He catches people doing bad stuff and does bad things himself, and he tries to cope with it. He vows never to use the fade again when his brother Bernard dies partially because of him. Unexpectantly I find that the book is divided up into different sections, the next one called “Susan”. This part takes place in the future, when Paul is dead. Susan is a writer, and Paul was a famous writer when he lived, and Susan is inspired by him. She comes across a manuscript, which in fact was the story that was the first part of the book. Susan reads it and tries to decipher whether it is truth or fiction, and if it can be published, as an autobiography of Paul. She suspects it is fake because of the fact of the fade. The next part is the next section of the book that Susan later finds, and it is about Paul when he is in his forties. It is just a continuation of his life, and he feels that the next fader is ready, so he goes out to find him. The next fader is named Ozzie, and he discovers the fade on his own, without Paul, and does bad things with it. He came from a bad family; he had a father that abused him. When he discovered the fade he used it to his advantage, killing his father, and hurting and scaring people that had teased him over the years. Paul comes looking for him, and Ozzie encounters him. Ozzie had bad voices in his head, telling him to do the bad things he did, the fade brought it on to him. Ozzie tries to attack Paul because the voices told him to, and he did it while he was in the fade so he couldn’t see him.

‘Poetry can challenge the reader to think about the world in new ways.’ It provokes the readers to consider events, issues and people with revised understanding and perspectives. The poems Dulce Et Decorum Est (Wilfred Owen, 1917) and Suicide in the Trenches (Siegfried Sassoon, 1917), were composed during World War One and represented the poets’ point of views in regards to the glorification of war and encouraged readers to challenge their perspectives and reflect upon the real consequences behind the fabrications of the glory and pride of fighting for one’s nation.
It is evident that the socio-cultural context in which Wilfred Owen operated had a powerful impact upon his poetic motivation and the messages he conveyed through his work. Before exploring Wilfred Owen’s work we first must understand the society that Wilfred Owen lived in, to be able to really understand appreciate his poems and their impact on society. At the time in which he operated, Britain’s public opinion on warfare and conflicts were astonishingly positive, especially in the early stages of WW1. These false perception on war led the vast majority of male citizens to perceive war recruitment as an opportunity to set off on ‘terrific adventures’ and earn immense amounts of honour for their families and nation. Government propaganda meant that soldiers believed that they were gathering fame and fortune in the name of Great Britain. This cruel and false perception of warfare which in turn led to a steady rate of volunteers for the war and included Wilfred Owen himself. Chaos and drudgery are common themes throughout the poem, displayed in its form; it is nearly iambic pentameter, but not every line fits the required pattern. This is significant because the poem’s imperfect formulation is Owen making a statement about formality, the poem breaks the typical form to show that everything is not functioning satisfactorily. The poem’s stanza’s also begin short, but become longer, like the speaker’s torment and his comrades movement away from the open fire. The rhyming scheme of ABABCDCD is one constant throughout the poem, but it serves to reinforce the nature of the cadence as the soldiers tread on. The war seems to drag on longer and longer for the speaker, and represents the prolonged suffering and agony of the soldier’s death that is described as the speaker dwells on this and is torn apart emotionally and distorts his impressions of what he experiences.
Owen emphasises that the massacres caused by war do lead to crippling physical damage. In ‘DEDE’, he conveys this by the use of simile paired with alliteration “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags”. These two lines, to begin ‘DEDE’ sets the mood of the poem, giving the audience a bitter greeting and asserts their fatigue. The comparison the men to beggars emphasises their ageing prematurely and that they have a lack of control over their life. Wilfred Owen expresses the horror of fighting in war in the last few lines of his third stanza and in the fourth, by describing the event of a fellow soldier dieing due to a gas shell. Born in 1893, Wilfred Owen is one of Britain’s most famous poets for giving us insight into the gruesome reality of World War 1. Owen joins World War 1 on October 21st, 1915 and soon finds himself as a 2nd lieutenant on the front line leading to his death at the age of 25. While being admitted to CraigLockhart War Hospital due to shell-shock, he realizes his only way of coping with his emotions from the war is to express them through poetry. In Wilfred’s poems, he writes about his personal experiences as well as others and the effect war has on its survivors mentally and physically show. In the poems “Mental Cases”, “Disabled” and “Insensibility” Wilfred Owen shows the physical, psychological and brutal memories war has on its victims.
