Recommended: The nature of evil in
People have constantly attempted to understand what evil truly is, and, if possible, how to eliminate this evil from their lives. However, first it must be known what it is that is being eliminated. Different people, cultures, and eras have all had a different view of what evil is, and how it affects their lives, and there is no true answer. Because of this, discussing the idea of whether people are born or can be evil is meaningless. The idea of what evil is, and whether people can be evil, is relative and cannot be applied to human nature in a universal way.
The discussion of whether evil exists is dependent on the definition of evil. In the sense of human action, evil can be seen as consciously doing harmful acts. The idea of what constitutes evil is then subjective to what a person perceives as harmful. If a society believes that an act is harmful, then it could be constituted as evil. However, this disparages the idea that evil can be universal, because what is harmful to one person or society may be perfectly acceptable to another. How can it be that the same act is considered both evil and not evil? It may be that in every act, there is a mix between evil, and its counterpart, good.
For many, good is much easier to explain than evil. Good can be seen as the right or desirable quality, and evil is the opposite. If a person does something that is seen as good, or desirable, it must be the right action for either themselves or others. If it is the right action for themselves, then each person, according to Plato, is doing a good act. A person will do what is right for them, or else it was not the right action for them. For Plato, evil is the ignorance of the right action. By being ignorant, and not consciously doing harmfu...

...hey are not truly evil. To define people as good or evil from birth is nonsensical, because newborns do not have any conscious thought, and any actions that happen have meaning placed upon them by other philosophers, such as Xun-Zi.
When people realize that good and evil are just points of view that are placed on other people and actions, it is possible to transcend these superficial roles. Since it is people who create the meaning of evil, it cannot be said that people are evil, or are born evil, because not only is that a perspective that is assumed onto others, which will change with different cultures, societies, and eras, but the very same acts may appear to be both good and evil, depending on the perspective in which the acts are seen. Ultimately, it is the individual’s responsibility to decide for himself the effects of his actions on himself and others.
The lines that define good and evil are not written in black and white; these lines tend to blur into many shades of grey allowing good and evil to intermingle with each another in a single human being. Man is not inherently good or evil but they are born innocent without any values or sense of morality until people impart their philosophies of life to them. In the words of John Locke:
Good and evil make the world we are living in today. However evil stands out more than good and people tend to focus on the evil behavior of humans more often. Human nature tends to decide that if someone looks evil they will be evil. The good and the bad make up the goodness in life. It is impossible to always be good or evil but there are things that can make us better or worse as a person. For one to be free, one must live in a world of evil and good.
It is the contention of this paper that humans are born neutral, and if we are raised to be good, we will mature into good human beings. Once the element of evil is introduced into our minds, through socialization and the media, we then have the potential to do bad things. As a person grows up, they are ideally taught to be good and to do good things, but it is possible that the concept of evil can be presented to us. When this happens, we subconsciously choose whether or not to accept this evil. This is where the theories of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke become interesting as both men differed in the way they believed human nature to be.
Has evil always been around, or did man create it? One could trace evil all the way back to Adam and Eve; however, evil came to them, but it was not in them. When did evil become part of a person? No one knows, but evil has been around for a long time and unfortunately is discovered by everyone. In many great classics in literature evil is at the heart or the theme of the novel, including Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. This classic book demonstrates the growing up of two children in the South and illustrates the theme of evil by showing how they discover, how they deal, and how they reconcile themselves to the evils they experience.
“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” (Eleanor Roosevelt). This is just one of the infinite examples of how human nature has been explored by so many different people. Each and every human is born with the capability of making their own choices. The decisions that they will make in the future will determine how evil they are viewed by others. Although one’s nature and nurture do affect their life, it is their own free will that determines whether or not they are evil.
There is always a debate between whether human beings are born essentially good or evil. Though some may agree with one or another, good and evil are one thread; they are just the same line viewed from different sides. Environment may be one of the major factors that create different perspectives within each person. According to the article “A Debate over Good and Evil” from World History, William J. Duiker and Jackson J. Spielvogel mention how there are two sayings of the human nature: good versus evil. Mencius, an ancient Chinese humanitarian philosopher, claims that human are born with a good heart, while another ancient Chinese philosopher, Xunzi, argues that evil is inherent in human nature.
Over the course of history, humans have struggled to determine wether they are inherently evil or inherently good. Events in history, famous philosophers, and writers all seek to answer the question of humanity’s nature. It is through the literary works of Golding and Dickens, the wisdom of Xun Kuang and Augustine, and incidents such as Bleeding Kansas that reveal humanity to be inherently evil. The blood-thirst within the people that grows without the rules of a civilization, reveals that human nature is inherently evil.
I do not think people are born evil, but I don’t think they are born good either, the way the person acts is mostly on their parents, where they live, and their self.
A famous philosopher Socrates once said, 'the unexamined life is not worth living.' With that idea, the question 'Are Human Beings Intrinsically Evil?' has been asked by philosophers for many years. It is known as one of the unanswerable questions. Determinists have come to the conclusion that we are governed by the laws of science, that there is nothing we can do about ourselves being evil because we naturally are. Evil is simply the act of causing pain. In this essay I will argue that human beings are born with a natural reaction to 'fear and chaos' to be instinctively evil.
Human nature is evil, and goodness is caused by intentional activity. ~ Xun Zi. What Xun Zi is saying is that, it is in our blood to be evil. The goodness in the world comes from intentional actions that we take, that we might not even know that we do. Humans are made with evil in mind, it all started with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Maybe if they did not disobey God, we might not be programmed with evil intentions and thoughts.
People are being put into categories of who is good and who is bad based on their actions. What causes someone to be bad, are we born evil, is there a underlying problem we’re all facing? What is good and evil, and is it on a more higher spiritual level that we can’t comprehend? Tzu’s states in his writing, “Man’s nature is evil; goodness is the result of conscious activity” (709). I feel like Tsu’s statement is bias. In my eyes, humans are all born innocent and pure. We can learn so much from babies, because they have little to no influences on behavior. The only problem is that we clearly can’t communicate with babies, however we can guess what they want and or feeling based on actions. According to Tom Stafford “Are we naturally good or bad?” BBC, BBC, 14 Jan. 2013, www.bbc.com/future/story/20130114-are-we-naturally-good-or-bad. Accessed 7 Sept. 2017. “Experiments carried out at Yale university suggest that even the youngest humans have a sense of right and wrong, and, furthermore, an instinct to prefer good over evil.” Going more in depth, this goes against Tzu’s saying and proves that not everyone or anyone is born evil. When a child is born their first instinct is to feel love and affection not anger and
I believe that humans have neither a good or evil nature. That good and evil are a man made device and a product of our culture. They are subject to change and are not agreed upon by human’s as a whole species. Babies are born with a clean slate. Good and evil is imparted on them. That without this external involvement babies would not be able to know what actions are good or evil. The following arguments present the questions that I have, that lead to my conclusion.
1. I think that evil isn't inherent in human nature. Humans aren't born evil because they learn it over time. Humans are born to do selfish and greedy things. When we are young we are taught to be good to fit the social norm. We are raised to be kind and nice to overcome our evil actions and tendencies. People can be good but it is easier to be bad becuase we are born with animal instincts. For example in the Lord of the Flies, it was easier for the boys to give into hunting because they thought it was fun and it would give them a rush of adrenaline. Humans have the tendencies to be good or bad. But because we are human we don't know what good or bad is. I think that we learn to be evil because of the enviornment. For example is someone is born in a violent environment, they too will be violent. As John Locke says, people are born as a blank slate. You are able to make your own choices as you grow up as to who you want to be, you aren't just born as something without a choice.
...ing, it is safe to say that humans are not by nature evil but instead, they are good but easily influenced by the environment and society to act in evil way and do such evil things. You choose the road you want to take; either it’s the bad road or the good road. We are all born to live a life where we will be faced with good and evil things. We were not born to be an evil or bad person, but as you get older you make that choice. What do you want to be remembered as: the good or the bad person? Choose to be good over being bad because the rewards to your family, your friend, and yourself will always outweigh the bad.
People raised either in a good home or a lousy home. Depending on which home you are raised in makes your view on “good” and “evil” will be different than that of other people. Example of this is if Phil was raised in an abusive house while growing up he might think that it’s ok to hit people or he might be a very violent person without thinking about it, While bob who was
