Science Fiction often opens the eyes of humanity so we can try to imagine what the future will hold. More specifically, Science Fiction movies allow us to explore examples of utopian or dystopian societies. They allow us to explore different planets in outer space. Due to all of the creative components found in the set designs of several science fiction movies, a viewer can watch the movie and escape reality. The interesting innovations seen in the set designs look very futuristic so the viewer’s imagination is inspired and lets you indulge in the film.
The Science Fiction movie entitled “Gattaca” is a clear example because of its futuristic and captivating set designs that keep the viewer interested and lets your imagination run wild. “Gattaca” was directed and written by Andrew Nicool in the year 1997. The movie lets us explore the future and imagine what would happen if ones whole life was determined with the prick of a finger. At birth you are categorized as valid or invalid which determines your destiny and future failures or accomplishments. Your DNA becomes the entrance to your identity. With a simple handshake, the touch of a doorknob, even a single eyelash, technological advancements allow scientists to reveal whether you are deemed as valid or invalid in society. In this paper, I will critically analyze the set design in the movie “Gattaca”, because it is the best method to visualize the future, which allows us to imagine how the future will be.

The film’s captivating set design allows the viewer to get a visual perspective of technological advancements and scientific motivations that can alter the lives of human beings drastically. In fact, as seen in the article written by Aguila, several scientific experiments have already been conducted to genetically modify human genes. The movie helps the viewer explore the possibilities that DNA innovations offer. Furthermore, although this film is science fictional viewers should not disregard the information proposed within the plot, but rather use their imagination to further explore what the movie has to offer. The future is ours to conquer, why not use our intellectual mind frames to examine possibilities and futuristic utopias.
Throughout the time, humans believe themselves as a superior species by occupying the land to develop and to modify their community. Moreover, people continuously research on human’s specialties. Among several terms, human defines themselves through “human authenticity.” According to two articles, “Dr. Daedalus” and “Alone Together”, two authors thoughtfully examine human authenticity through comparing humans with two other helping objects. A human authenticity includes a relationship with people through communication to solve personal and social problems with people’s previously learned knowledge. Even more, people begin to believe themselves as mostly evolved organisms among other species, which idea is called “Speciesism”. A speciesism defines human authenticity through several aspects of human’s natural abilities. Just human’s intelligence does not define their identity, but a physical appearance and human-to-human relationship including performance of intelligence all combine to explain a complex species of humans. A speciesism allows people to perform their abilities which is directly relate to people’s authenticity. Lauren Slater, an author of “Dr. Daedalus,” describes a bond between a plastic surgery and human’s identity. On the other hand, Sherry Turkle, an author of “Alone Together,” explains a cyber-alternation of humans’ problems, loneliness and relationship. Literature and film have always held a strange relationship with the idea of technological progress. On one hand, with the advent of the printing press and the refinements of motion picture technology that are continuing to this day, both literature and film owe a great deal of their success to the technological advancements that bring them to widespread audiences. Yet certain films and works of literature have also never shied away from portraying the dangers that a lust for such progress can bring with it. The modern output of science-fiction novels and films found its genesis in speculative ponderings on the effect such progress could hold for the every day population, and just as often as not those speculations were damning. Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein and Fritz Lang's silent film Metropolis are two such works that hold great importance in the overall canon of science-fiction in that they are both seen as the first of their kind. It is often said that Mary Shelley, with her authorship of Frankenstein, gave birth to the science-fiction novel, breathing it into life as Frankenstein does his monster, and Lang's Metropolis is certainly a candidate for the first genuine science-fiction film (though a case can be made for Georges Méliès' 1902 film Le Voyage Dans la Lune, his film was barely fifteen minutes long whereas Lang's film, with its near three-hour original length and its blending of both ideas and stunning visuals, is much closer to what we now consider a modern science-fiction film). Personally as i watched this Video I thought it would be so amazing if someone found a way so we can view our possible threats to our lives but with good point of views also come with some negative point of views. The reason why i think this would be a great advancements in our everyday lives is because it could potentially lead us to a cure to cancer if we could figure out what's exactly causing it, then maybe we could find a way to reverse it. I also think this gives us a heads up on what might be coming our way in the future and gives us some time to figure out how to make it so it doesn't happen. I also think this knowing your genetic code could be harmful to people's living habits, expenses and to their love ones. I feel as if people learned they were for instance were going to only live till they were 50 because of a disease they would live life carefully and take their time with a grain of salt versus if someone where to find out they wouldn't have any problems they wouldn't care what they ate or how much they spend or even how much time they have with their loved ones because they knew that nothing bad would come to them. I think this future technology is definitely something to think about and also something that could possibly change the world for good or bad, so whoever holds all this information needs to decide

With more than fifty years of research, and billions of dollars, scientists have uncovered methods to improve and prolong human life and the possibilities offered by gene therapy and genetic technology are increasing daily.

Gattaca brought about some interesting points on human evolution and human ingenuity. We live in a world where babies are left to chance and genetic metaling is frowned upon, but in Gattaca that idea is flipped. Society judges those who are left to God as inferior. How can one be judged for the decision of their parents? Science is moving into uncharted territory, where we might be able to create “super humans” as depicted in the movie. Gattaca revealed both the pros and cons of genetic engineering in science.
