Exploring Why Martin Luther King Was Both Bitterly Criticised and Deeply Mourned by Black Citizens of the USA Martin Luther king was bitterly criticised by many people but conversely he was also deeply mourned when he was assassinated on April 4th 1968 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, king was only 39 years old. His death was followed by rioting in 125 cities and resulted in forty-six people being killed. There are many reasons for this contrast in opinions of Martin Luther King, some believed he was arrogant; when members of the SNCC asked King to join them on the ride into Mississippi, he pompously declined saying ‘I think I should choose the time and place of my Golgotha’. On the other hand, Martin Luther King was hailed as the most conspicuous- and eloquent – among all civil rights leaders and he stood up for what he believed in and became a drum for justice . King was an influential leader to millions of black citizens in the USA however the extent to which his leadership skills benefited the movement had been a controversial idea debated during his lifetime, and this has since his death. Martin Luther king was bitterly criticized by other groups such as the NAACP and CORE who said he was a ‘glory seeker’. A NAACP leader Medgar Evers was assassinated, Martin Luther King wanted to stage a massive joint protest with all the civil rights groups. However, Roy Wilkins, the Executive Secretary of the NAACP in 1963 disapproved this idea he did not want Martin Luther King and the SCLC to get involved. In addition some people believed before and after his death the way he dealt with his personal life and his lack of organization failed him miserably. Achieving Racial Equality On April 12th, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. was leading a peaceful protest in the city of Birmingham, Alabama that resulted in him being arrested and jailed. Later that day, eight clergymen responded with the statement “A Call For Unity” in The Birmingham News requesting he ends all of his protests. A few days later, King created a response to the statement in the form of an open letter. In this letter, Martin Luther King Jr. develops a well-proposed argument in response to the eight clergymen who published the statement. Throughout the letter, King uses rhetorical appeal in order to give the viewer a sense of King’s credibility, his emotions, and also his logic on why he does what he does.
Martin Luther King, Jr., born on January 15, 1929, was well known for his nonviolent movement to bring justice and to an end to the segregation of the people in the United States back in the 1950s. With King being the leader of a peaceful protest, it failed to bring equally to the colored people. Everyone that has been through the American school system within the past 20 years knows exactly who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is, and exactly what he did to help shape the United States to what it is today. In the beginning of the book, Martin Luther King Jr. Apostle of Militant Nonviolence, by James A. In hindsight the build-up to 1963 is obvious; the tension had grown rather than diminished since the Emancipation Proclamation as new laws were enacted but slowly carried out or blatantly ignored. The centennial of the Proclamation was approaching, and the lack of follow-through by both Republicans and Democrats, in both the South and the North, brought disappointment, frustration, and anger. President Kennedy promised changes to housing discrimination but did not sign them into law until two years into his term and was not specific enough for it to bring actual change (p. 8). Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the leader of a peaceful movement to end segregation in the United States this mission led him in 1963 to Birmingham, Alabama where officials and leaders in the community actively fought against desegregation. While performing sit-ins, marches and other nonviolent protests, King was imprisoned by authorities for violating the strict segregation laws. While imprisoned King wrote a letter entitled “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, in which he expresses his disappointment in the clergy, officials, and people of Birmingham. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” while most appropriately described as a response to criticism, is not written from a defensive position. While his letter more than aptly provides a functional defense of his actions at Birmingham, it serves more so as a counter-critical rebuttal that both repudiates criticisms of his deeds, and criticizes the reasoning behind said criticisms. Dr. King uses the very denunciative tools used against him, such as assertions of premature action and aggressiveness, as both defense and offense, effectively dismissing any wrong on his part, and elucidating the myopic nature of the white moderates’ reticence. What makes his criticism particularly powerful, besides its solid reasoning, and open publication, is the medium between his logic and the receptivity of his audience: his rhetoric. In his letter, King addresses the accusations of civil disobedience and extremism, and his being encouraged to submit to quietism, but the manner in which these facets are presented by the opposition, distort King’s actual position, proving to be the greatest threat to King’s efforts. King’s ability to overcome these obstacles was not through the use of logic alone, but through the use of rhetorical delivery.
