Recommended: The rise of American political parties
There has always been discourse between the political parties of America, and though this is common, a fight within the party can be devastating, and this dispute can lead to a lack of progression in the house. This can also lead to the loss of the house itself. During the election of 1860, a split between the Democratic party supposedly resulted in the election of Abraham Lincoln. Or so many people claim. Did the split of the Democratic party in 1860 actually lead to the election of Lincoln?
In the election of 1860 there were four candidates running; Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, John C. Breckenridge, and John Bell. The Republicans nominated Lincoln, the northern Democrats nominated Douglas, the southern Democrats nominated Breckenridge, and the Constitutional Union Party (Independent/Moderate party) selected John Bell (U-s-history.com). It is believed that because the Democrat Party was split during the election, and therefore had two candidates in which the Democratic voters had to choose between, it divided the Democrat vote and caused Lincoln to win the election. The b...
Lincoln received more popular votes than the Democrats; this was an important shift in Illinois. Lincoln gained a strong reputation through out the entire north. By Douglas winning, he further alimented Presidents Buchanan’s administration and especially the south. The south soon lost its power in the Senate; the division of the Democratic Party was even more splintered. Lincoln assured the south that he would not interfere with slavery in their states where it already excited. Also, Lincoln assured the north that he was not ready for political or social equality of the races.
Michael F. Holt, in his article The Political Divisions That Contributed to Civil War, argued the American Civil War was caused by the breakdown of the two-party political system, which generated a local loss of faith in the entire political system, justifying the creation of a new political system in the South. It was the agency of individuals attempting to solve their political grievances. While Bruce Levine, in his article The Economic Divisions That Contributed to Civil War, maintained unresolvable economic divisions between North and South made the Civil War inevitable, as the two different economies could not indefinitely coexist. While the conflicting economies of the North and the South played a major role in fashioning the war,

The election of President Abraham Lincoln became the catalyst for the events leading to the Civil War. Lincoln represented the Republican Party who believed that all men should be free and that it was wrong to maintain people as slaves, ...
The Illinois Senate race of 1858 between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had famous Lincoln- Douglas debates that helped elevate Lincoln to a higher star status within the Republican party which greatly influenced his popularity for the 1860 presidential elections. Douglas’ Freeport Doctrine decreased Douglas’ influence and popularity in the South, making the election of 1860 largely sectional which the more populated, more Republican North won. The underlying discussion over slavery ─ i.e. Dred Scott decision, Freeport Doctrine, etc. ─ brought up the ideological debate of the position and place of blacks, thus the ideological battle of race in America that was fought and largely dominated by the South for almost a century. Without the crisis of the 1850’s and what was the central debate at the time. Neither the Civil War, fourteenth through fifteenth amendment, nor the ideological battle over rave would have happened when they did.
The election of Abraham Lincoln, an anti-slavery advocate, in 1860 resulted in the secession of the South from the United States of America. The South seceded from the Union and encouraged others to do the same, as Abraham Lincoln was against popular sovereignty and the Constitution. (Doc 7) Abraham Lincoln condemned the institution of slavery, which led the the secession of the South upon his presidential nomination.
...eadership of the democrats, believed in popular sovereignty ie the population of a state choosing for itself on the matter of slavery. The other member also aiming to rule the democrats was Breckinbridge, who believed in slavery being permitted in all states. The democrat party split into the northern and southern democrats. Because of the split Lincoln was able to win the election, upon which the southern states succeeded from the union.
In this essay, I will explain why Texas should retain the partisan election of judges. Texas is one of the few states that elect their judges using a Partisan voting method. Partisan elections can be unfair and can misinform the voter. A high legal position such as a judge should never be chosen in such a manner. Partisan elections often cost more than nonpartisan elections in campaigning. Partisan elections are also more likely to lead to straight ticket voting or mindless voting. Partisan elections also lead to more campaign contributions and can increase the power of constituencies. Lastly partisan elections can cause an imbalance in equal represent the population. Therefore, Partisanship voting does not belong in the courts of Texas and

Equality in American Democracy American democracy changed drastically after the Civil War. One of the major changes in American democracy was equality. Today, American citizens are more equal than the Americans before the Civil War. Major movements, events, and government decisions changed the way people view equality today. Some of these changes improved the equality between American citizens, but others only increased the inequality.
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as president in the United State. But, the United States had been divided in the 1850s, due to the question about expansion of slavery and the rights of the slave owner. The issue of slavery had heated the nation to the boiling point. Fourth Months later, after Abraham presidential election, the seven states in the deep southern part of the United States, like South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia. Louisiana, and Texas, had seceded and seized many federal facilities. Although President Lincoln is the president of the United State, he still had no official powers to do anything about the Southern forming a new nation. On April 15, Lincoln called 75,000 volunteers to put down the Southern rebellion, and to reverse the seven states to vote in favor of session. After the nation drifted toward conclusion, Abraham Lincoln traveled all over the North, so he can make campaign speeches for the Republicans party. Abram Lincoln used his influence, as the leader of the Republican Party, by reaching out to the political leader of the Republican party, writing privately letters, demanded that the Republican party needs to hold firm to its opposition to the extension of slavery and to also reassure the southern that the Republicans composed no threats. When Civil War begins, Abr...
The separation of the south and north was not the only separation the United States was going through, the Democratic Party had split. The northern and southern Democrats turn on each other. After several delegates walked out of the Democratic convention, Douglas, who was not supposed to be put up for nomination for president because he would not support the idea of making all states have slaves, was nominated for president. After the fact that Douglas was nominated without the entire Democratic Party consent, the southern democrats nominated John C. Breckinridge, who believed that all the states should have slavery, thus a split in the Democratic Party. For more information, please visit www.foner.com.
Without a single electoral vote from the Southern states, Lincoln became the sixteenth president of America. Running against Douglas, a Democrat, Breckinridge, and Bell in 1860, he won forty percent of the popular vote, and a large majority of the electoral vote as well (Doc B). This enraged southern states, because they realized that since Lincoln was able to win with only the northern states’ votes, they did not have enough representation or power to elect the president. After this election, the southern states were more willing to secede from the Union, making Crittenden’s proposal doomed to be rejected from the beginning, because there was no hope for the Southern Democrats and the Northern Republicans to reach a compromise. In addition, though senator Seward was a Republican, he supported the extension of the Missouri Compromise line and was willing to negotiate with the South in order to preserve the Union. He ran against Lincoln for the Republican party nomination and lost, but, in a letter from Lincoln in December 1860, he was offered the position of Secretary of State (Doc I), a common stepping stone to becoming president. Lincoln knew Seward was a threat to his beliefs due to their
Abraham Lincoln (12 Feb. 1809-15 Apr. 1865) the 16th president (civilwar.org) of the United States of America was one of the main public persons that influence the civil war in many aspects. Even though the civil war may have been the last resource the nation had, it could be argue that Lincoln’s governments try its best to find a different solution. The civil war was a conflict that destroyed the nation; it perhaps could have been avoided if the second party had work for a solution. But it is true that maybe both parts could have looked out for the benefits of the people as a whole instead of their personal benefits. Lincoln principal positive effect on the civil war was actually before and during the war when Lincoln’s government had many attempts to prevent the confrontation, and when this one began he took the right decisions to win the war. One of the biggest effects on the civil war was the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which gave the slaves their liberty. Many would agree is that Abraham’s Lincoln effect on the civil war was positive but Lincoln made many mistakes or misjudgments during the war as well. Perhaps the biggest mistake Lincoln did was underestimating the South what caused many unnecessary deaths. He also did had misjudgments that cause many causalities. Since the beginning of time humanity has fought for what they thought was right. In April 12 of 1861(civilwar.org) The US would begin a fight for civic and moral rights, a civil war that perhaps was the last option for a country to reunite its values. Abraham Lincoln was the president of the time and the person the influence the most the course the war took. I strongly believe that Lincoln’s decisions influence or had more positive effects on the country. Being the president at times like the civil war is without doubt it is one of the toughest jobs, and one way or another there is going to be correct and incorrect decisions but I can agree president Lincoln did what he thought it was the best at that moment.
In 1824 election, the unity of the party was shattered by a contest between several strong rivals for the presidency. William H. Crawford, Monroe’s secretary of the treasury, secured the caucus nomination from a rump group of congressmen, but other contenders, including Adams, Jackson, and Henry Clay, threw the vote into the House of Representatives. Clay threw his support to Adams, who won the presidency. In the aftermath, new coalitions were formed and eventually another two-party system emerged.
