Due to how easily information can be obtained using the internet, a major change has occurred in which some schools are moving towards a more technological dependant classroom environment with the assumption that it will positively impact the process of learning, due to that it is said that modern children no longer need to develop the skill of reading. It is crucial for children to develop the skill of reading books as it enables critical thinking, the development of the mind and language skills for example being able to read instructions on a medicine bottle. It allows children to obtain logical thinking skills that allows them to utilize good judgement. Reading books prompts leaners to engage in their work and confront ideas and opinions. Klaus (2011) states that “Most learners learn best by physically and mentally interacting with what they are studying”. There is a link to physical gestures when one is reading and cognition as the things we can do to print books for better understanding and absorption cannot easily be done using technology. A student who is a good and active reader is most likely to excel in examinations. If most teaching is done using technology, these student’s needs are not met. In order to comprehend information from the internet one still requires the basic skill of reading which is obtained through reading books. Books are an independent source of knowledge and pleasure, it does not require people to rely on conditions such as battery life and internet access to obtain the information they require. Which proves that studying by reading books do not face nearly as much complications as the involvement of technology
With the rise of technology and the staggering availability of information, the digital age has come about in full force, and will only grow from here. Any individual with an internet connection has a vast amount of knowledge at his fingertips. As long as one is online, he is mere clicks away from Wikipedia or Google, which allows him to find what he needs to know. Despite this, Nicholas Carr questions whether Google has a positive impact on the way people take in information. In his article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Carr explores the internet’s impact on the way people read. He argues that the availability of so much information has diminished the ability to concentrate on reading, referencing stories of literary types who no longer have the capacity to sit down and read a book, as well as his own personal experiences with this issue. The internet presents tons of data at once, and it is Carr’s assumption that our brains will slowly become wired to better receive this information.
The purpose of Carr’s essay is to inform the reader about one skill that he believes is being undermined, which is reading. He believes the internet is rewiring the way the human mind operates. The internet has captured our attention and has shaped our process of thought. He recognizes how the change we are going through is the loss of book habits. The Web is now our default starting point for the majority of our work. He even has felt this skill eroded within himself, stating, “I’m not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I’m reading” (Carr 408). He’s not alone, Bruce Friedman, a blogger has described how the internet has altered his mind, “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or print” (410). I am sure Carr and Friedman are not the only ones who have felt a change in their ability to read a book or a lengthy article and not get distracted. As a society, we have all been impacted by this, and we are Carr’s audience for his essay.
Through most of my time in high school, I always found myself writing more of exploratory writing for two simple reasons; it took a shorter amount of time, and relating writing to my personal experiences was something I had no need to look up. Exploratory writing is a time to take advantage to relate your own personal experiences and an attempt to make a connection with a certain reading. The experiences you have will not be exactly the same as you’re classmate and might be very enjoyable to read. Lamott and Hairston both use explanatory and exploratory writing in their essays by explaining the techniques of what good writers do and applying their own personal experiences. By applying both explanatory and exploratory in their essay they are able to provide the reader with new ideas they can adopt to improve their writing skills.
