No More Mr.Cool Candy! Would you like your child to suffer problems from sugary sweets or junk food? Many schools are arguing if sugary sweets should be banned in American classrooms. Believe it or not, twenty percent of the population is obese (Codey). This means that if we don’t stop children from eating junk food they will possibly get many problems in their health and might not live as long as a child who eats healthy. According to Codey, “Nearly 300,000 people die each year from complications associated with being obese or overweight.” The point Codey is trying to make is that instead of cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies we can bring healthy snacks such as apple sauce and caramel apples. Many people agree that children need to stay healthy because they still have a whole life to go through. While children may like the taste of candy, it can cause very severe problems to their health. Some of these problems include diabetes, obesity, and cavities for children. In my opinion, sweet treats should be banned from schools because they can cause …show more content…
They can get diabetes. There are many types of diabetes, Such as diabetes type 1 where your body can not handle how much sugar you consume. There is also diabetes type 2 which is produced later on in life from eating unhealthy foods. (American Diabetes Association) Both of these types of diabetes are created by eating too much unhealthy food. If you eat too much unhealthy food your body can not break it down and you get diabetes one. Can you just imagine your child take pills. Furthermore, apart from diabetes the next time you take your child to the dentist you might not receive great results. If your child eats too much junk food she or she can suffer from toothaches. According, to Health Dentistry many children get toothaches from eating too much sugar. Wouldn't you like to save your child from a terrible toothache or
Jon Gabriel explains how sugar has become an addictive drug like nicotine, the only difference is that its legal. Once we become hooked on it we become habituated to its effects and need more and more to satisfy ourselves. As a result of the increase in marketing and the on going dependence on sugary foods and beverages, children are taking in more and more sugar and obtaining less and less nutrients. According to Gentry Lasater,
Unhealthy foods are what make the money for schools and that is why they serve them for students. (Schlafy) Schools feel like they need the extra money in the budget, even though it is at the student’s expense. Data shows that nearly 60% of all middle schools in the US serve soda from vending machines. (Schlafy) Soda is very high in sugar and is not at all good for children, but it is still sold in school vending machines. The ways food in schools is now are way too high in fats and sugars. This is not good for the children and very bad in the long run. Elementary schoolchildren have an estimated $15 billion of their own money that they can use to buy whatever they want in schools, and parents have almost another $160 billion to give students for food money. (Schlafy) Big businesses see this as a big source of profit and therefore encourage children to buy their products, and want them to be offered in school because of th4e likelihood of children buying the business’s product. All in all, obesity in the US is greatly influenced by the foods offered in schools
A child who eats too much fat, sugar, sodium or processed food and too few vitamins and minerals is likely to develop a higher risk of several chronic health problems. These might include diabetes, kidney stones, bone loss, cancer and heart disease. This is important
This doesn’t help kids focus in the classroom for hours after consuming these fatty and sugary foods. The kids will get a sugar high but then crash hours after and won’t be focusing in class but instead, falling asleep during an important lesson. Anita states that, “school cafeterias, of all places, should demonstrate how a healthy, low-fat, well-balanced diet produces healthy, energetic, mentally alert people,” and teaching this at high schools is the best place to change the food because in this generation, kids are becoming overweight and unhealthy because of all the “junk food” they are eating. Teenagers in high school tend to eat more when they are stressed, so if they serve unhealthy foods in the cafeterias then the student will eat the “junk food”, but if the “junk” is switched with fruits, vegetables, and some salads then the students wouldn’t have the sugar high and be focused
Pediatric Dentists promote dental health of children as well as serve as education resources for parents. Healthy teeth are the results of healthy eating. “Like the rest of the body, the teeth, bones and the soft tissues of the mouth need a well-balanced diet. Children should eat a variety of foods from the five major food groups. Most snacks that children eat can lead to cavity formation. The more frequently a child snacks, the greater the chances for tooth decay.” (dentist4kid.com, 2014). Choose nutritious foods such as vegetables, low fat yogurt, and low fat cheese, if your child must snack, which are healthier and better for children’s teeth.
You are out for a quiet lunch with your family, the waitress walks over and your 6 year old child asks for a lemonade with their lunch. Sure, you think one glass of soft drink won’t hurt right? Wrong. That one, seemingly innocent glass of lemonade contains a whopping 6 teaspoons of sugar. I doubt that you would let your child eat 6 teaspoons of sugar from a bowl, so why would you allow them to consume it in the form of a sugary soft drink? Sugar is highly addictive, can cause cancer and is causing childhood obesity. The proliferation of sugar in society is causing widespread problems like obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancers, tooth decay and acid wear. Additionally, Rethink Sugary Drink claims that one can of soft drink a day can lead to an annual
Sugar is one of the most consumed commodities in the world today, and the profits of it are significant. According to Larry Schwartz (2014) “Americans consume 130 pounds of sugar every year” (Schwartz, 2014). We must be acknowledged about how it all started, to appreciate how people lived and how they struggled to provide such a commodity. Sugar was a profitable commodity in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. The cultivation of sugarcane expanded to the United States of America, which brought enslaves from Africa to work on the plantation of sugar during the 17th century. Sugar was known as the white gold for its income, which helped the U.S. to achieve independence from Great Britain. Although sugar has the worst history, it is widely used for nutritional, medical and industrial productions, and sugar manufacturing led to an industrial development and economic growth.
The oral cavity is the body’s first defense. Almost all basic daily functions such as breathing, eating, sensation, and immunization, involves functions of the mouth. In children, there is a connection between what happens in their mouth to what happens to the rest of their bodies. Having a toothache will directly affect a child’s life. A child may have problems eating and sleeping because of childhood caries leading to a negative impact on physical and cognitive development of the child. A cross-sectional study, undertaken by Acharya and Tandon (2011), found that 57.6% of the children in the group had problems eating. Childhood caries creates a cycle of poor health. Eating problems adversely affect a child’s nutrition and poor nutrition can lead to a higher risk of caries and therefore increase problems with eating affecting the physical development of the
In “Hooked on ‘Caramel-Colored Gold,” Melody Nelson claims “Despite the increased awareness of the benefits of good nutrition, we are a nation hooked on junk food, and many school administrators are taking advantage of the situation ” (par. 3). Nelson propose a ban on vending machines in schools because junk food is unhealthy for children, and they risk future health problems. I agree with Melody Nelson and believe that vending machines should be banned from school campuses, because they sell unhealthy food, they cause more money to schools for hiring extra custodians, and they are affecting children learning abilities.
The average American eats 156 pounds of added sugar each year. Sugar is delicious and once we have it, our body constantly wants more. Added sugar has become an American epidemic. “Eighty percent, or 480,000 of the 600,000 food products sold within the U.S. have added sugar, which, according to researchers and medical doctors, is why we have the world 's highest obesity rate is at 31 percent,” (Fed Up). The addictive quality of added sugar makes our brains want more of it constantly; however, our bodies are being negatively affected by its consumption in many ways.
Dawn Harsley presents her stance in this hot topic. She states that because sugars and sweets are much cheaper, most parents will feed their children those unhealthy options due to the fact that they are less costly (April 2014). Expense is certainly no excuse to not feeding children the best options available to them. Parents could easily find other options, however, it will not be an easy
Living with diabetes is very hard for an adult so we could only imagine how hard it has to be for child. As a child you crave sugars something that as a diabetic cannot have. The best way to prevent our children from becoming obese is providing them with healthy meals. After all how wants to see their children sick and especially with an illness that could be with them for the rest of their lives.
Probably some of the most pleasurable and enjoyable memories of a person has to do with sweets. When thinking back to birthdays, there is always the memory of the wonderful cake that mother beautifully made and decorated with frosting and glazes. A typical night out with dad can be transformed into a magical evening with a trip to the ice cream parlor. The end of a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner turns heavenly when a hot apple pie is brought to the table and topped with delicious, melting vanilla ice cream. A good wedding is never complete without the cutting of the splendid multi-level wedding cake, when the happy new couple gets to playfully shove and smear cake and white frosting into each other’s smiling faces. Everyone knows that as a child, the only good part about going to the dentist is getting the candy bar at the end of the visit. Why do some people get sick after eating too much suger? Some people do not even know that the abuse of sugar can lead to negative effects on your body. There is something strangely enjoyable and resplendent about the consumption of sugar. Why is it that sugar is so deliciously enjoyable and at the same time a food product that has many negative affects on people’s health?
Ban Junk Food Junk food. Is it the responsibility of schools to ban junk food and promote a healthy lifestyle for children of all ages between 6-18? Yes, yes it is. In my opinion, schools promoting a healthy lifestyle is as important as the children’s parents’ responsibility. Schools have as much impact in that department as children are fed during school hours.
Desserts can trigger severe problems. The highest risk developing health trouble is becoming overweight or obese. Especially young people, he or she would gain more pounds of what they take in than he or she will burn. According to Cameron Keady with TFK and TIME Reporting, American kids consume more than twenty teaspoons of sugar per day and adults take in about 50% more sugar onto this day than they did in the 1970s. Food deserts are in an urban area of which it is difficult to buy good quality fresh food. Living in a food desert area, it is more convenient to buy sweets. I say this because low-income people have a difficult time to find food that meets their dietary restrictions and sweets are always on the low-cost. This means it is more affordable for low-income people to buy sugary foods than fresh organic foods. HIH News in Health said, “About 15% of calories in the American adult diet comes from added sugars.” This is about twenty-two teaspoons of extra sugar a day. All these desserts will cause us numerous major consequence in the long-term. Many people are obese because of how they eat. Being overweight is dangerous and it can even result in deadly conditions. University of Utah used a mouse as experiment with sugar. Within the fifty-eight weeks of study, the mice ate 25% more sugar in its diet. They have concluded that the mice on the sugar diet would have died more likely
