Imagine being in class trying to focus on a lecture, when you hear students loudly discussing the last episode of Riverdale. Besides being distracting, this can be extremely frustrating for students because it makes it harder for them to pay attention in class. It also makes it harder for teachers because they have to try to regain the class’s attention. Talking in the hallways results in a distracted classroom that is unable to be productive. Placing a ban on talking in the hallways is an easy solution to all of these problems. Students at Ursuline Academy should not be allowed to talk in the hallways because it is distracting to other students, causes frustration among teachers, and decreases the productivity of each classroom. This is true because neither the teachers nor the students are able to fully focus on their work, causing a lack of concentration. An absence of productivity leads to even bigger problems. When the students aren’t listening or participating, the teacher has to spend even more time re-teaching the material at a later time. This throws the teacher off-schedule and prohibits them from covering all of the material they need to by the end of the semester. Students also have a harder time reaching deadlines if they are unable to cover all of the necessary material in class, forcing the teacher to push back the due dates to an even later date. All of these things throw off the entire schedule for the semester, leaving the teachers and students frustrated. Studies have also shown that distractions like people talking can aggravate the students and teachers, which effects the productivity of everyone. Teachers themselves are often left to make the best of what little they have to work with. A narrow curriculum with little for scholars to decide themselves leaves them feeling like completing cookie-cutter worksheets is boring and pointless. Over time, students begin to hold educators with contempt and become disgusted by school and the tedious, rote labor that comes with it. With no enthusiasm, defeated students scores plummet and the faculty in turn can develop a bad attitude about students. The worst part is this combination produces a negative loop that often only spirals further downward.
Some teachers do not allow any talking during class at all, even when students are just working independently. Students need to be able to collaborate with each other to help each other out and create new ideas. They should not have this workload that they have every night because they also have to live their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. In order to better define the noise present in a classroom, we must look at the classroom acoustics when the classroom is unoccupied and compare that to when the classroom is occupied. Acoustic standards recommended that maximum background noise levels for classrooms smaller than 10,000 ft3 do not exceed 35 dBA. Reverberation time (RT) should not exceed 0.6 seconds (ANSI SOURCE). Sadly, many classrooms do not meet this recommendation. Knecht, et. al recorded background noise levels and reverberation time in 32 unoccupied classrooms in eight public school buildings. Noise levels ranged from 34.4 to 65.9 dBA with only four classrooms meeting the ANSI standard. Reverberation time measured ranged from 0.2 to 1.27 seconds. Thirteen classrooms met the RT guidelines set by ANSI (Knecht). It is imperative that classrooms meet unoccupied guidelines as the noise levels only increase with the addition of students and teachers.
The rule that was one of the first ones that I encountered being in this classroom was her noise level rule/chart. There was a chart hanging in the very front of the room that enforced and reminded the students of her noise level rule, and she frequently referred to it. This rule was one that the students new well and followed it without a problem, it is also one that I wouldn’t mind using in my own classroom. The rule is that the students have different noise levels that are expected from them, the level they are supposed to be at is given by the teacher after the students are given the rules of an assignment or test. The first level is level 0 it means that there should be absolutely no talking, then there is level 1. Level 1 means that the student can whisper to their neighbor (shoulder buddy) but the person that is sitting across from them shouldn’t hear them nor should the teacher. The next level is level 2, it means that you can quietly talk to your group, this would be used if there was any group work going on, but the tables surrounding you should not be able to hear you. Then there is a level 3, level 3 is the classroom discussion level meaning that anyone in the room can hear what you are saying.
