Robert Dallek, an American historian, said “for those of us who cry out for gun control, our fears cannot be eliminated as long as the country remains an armed camp in which the most troubled can find ways to appropriate one of the easily available weapons in our communities.” There is ever week shooting in some schools in other states. Guns should not be allowed in schools. One reason guns should not be allowed in schools is because guns do not make children or teenagers feel safe. First, some of the students talked to the President to limit guns and who has access to them. Second, students protested against guns in schools. Third, the government has made it their political goal to protect children in schools. Overall, that is why guns should
Countless individuals across the world are fighting for: freedom, religious convictions and more commonly for their children future. The devastating attack that had happened in Sandy Brook Elementary School in America that led to few deaths and injuries of youths. Which makes individuals question is educational institutes even a safe place for children. Additionally, there are more shootings in America compared to other nations as Gopink states “ United States has more gun violence than other countries because we have more guns and are willing to sell them to madmen who want to kill people.”(Gopinak, 2007, p. 458 ). This demonstrates that United States is just not inclined to take any action on gun control which is leading to deaths of children and adults. Some individuals believe handguns are not needed in American 's society. Then those who oppose gun control argue guns are a necessity to: hunting in the wild, self-defense, and it is part of the American culture. Furthermore, gun violence is having a vast impact on loved ones; losing a family member can have enormous affect socially, physical and mentally.
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
That is why Rebekah Elliott’s article “The Real School Safety Debate: Why Legislative Responses Should Focus on Schools and Not on Guns” would be valuable to include. Elliot writes that to properly provide safety into schools is to put more funding into higher security and individual school safety programs. Like many writers, she agrees that the Sandy Hook incident shifted America’s views on the second amendment but she believes that having armed teachers could be a safety risk in itself. Her argument is that although it would be more cost efficient to arm teachers than to hire more security, it could increase the liability for negligence if there was a result in injuring a student (2015
One reason teachers should not be able to carry guns because guns are currently illegal in schools; Guns are illegal because they are dangerous. The Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) is a federal law that was accepted in the United States in 1990. According to the GFSZA, “It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In order for teachers to carry guns, we would have to discard this law. Also, the school board would have to create a new policy, allowing teachers to carry guns. Adjusting the rules would be time consuming and confusing. Changing the GFSZA would make students tense and distract children from learning. Citizens from CNN Politics say, “72.4% of educators said they would be unlikely to bring a firearm to school if allowed to do so.” This data shows that the majority of teachers do not even want possession of a gun in the classroom. School officers have the right to carry guns, teachers should just focus on education. Not only does it create a huge responsibility, there would also need to be a large financial investment to supply guns for every school. This money would be hard to come up with, and not everyone is in favor of sacrificing money for firearms.
... result in allowing it. Students could very fall into the wrong hands, teachers could snap and put others in harm, it could ruin the kid by making them feel nervous about it just being there, so on and so forth. There are numerous adversities that the population would have to face just to prevent something that might never happen. Does it seem worth all the heartaches one could experience? Ask yourselves, Is allowing teachers guns in the school the best option for the better of everyone? Maybe there are other safer and easier solutions to the problem. This world is chaotic and needs to have more security in schools. That is true, but the mindset of allowing teachers the ones to carrgo about things. Think about all the situations that could happen in the future or at anytime if we did allow it, and not just about the minor point that schools need to be more safe.
College shootings are becoming more and more common and inevitable. Being able to carry guns on campus is being questioned for safety purposes, but there is much more to it. Guns should not be allowed on campus because even though they’re supposed to keep you safe, they can be dangerous, there is no prior training on how the weapon is to be handled, and furthermore the use of a gun on campus can pressure individuals to submit under peer pressure.
With all of the school shootings that have happened lately I’m sure that most parents would want their child protected at any cost. As of January 2014, there had been an average of one school shooting every other school day. What are the schools doing to protect our kids when they are away from us at school? What more can be done to protect them? We are not able to be with our kids while they are at school, but we surely want to know that if a gunman does try to enter the school, there are measures in place to protect them. Should teachers be allowed to carry a handgun while in class? In my position argument I will discuss reasons that I feel that teachers should be able to carry while in class.
“Since 2013, there have been over 200 school shootings in America, an average of nearly one a week”(Everytown Research). How safe is our family members at school? Allowing teachers and staff to carry guns could lower that number. Some people may disagree with it, saying that it would be teaching students violence. School shootings would be a thing of the past if staff were armed.
This sounds dangerous, having guns in schools, but it actually provides more security. Most SRO’s have guns, which they are trained to use. Kenneth S. Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services, says, “School districts considering arming teachers and school staff with guns would take on significant responsibility and potential liabilities that I firmly believe are beyond the expertise, knowledge-base, experience, and professional capabilities of most school boards and administrators” (Arming Teachers and School Staff- School Security”). Trump does not believe that teachers should be allowed to arm guns inside the school because of a liability issue. Nonetheless, most houses have guns in them, but when they are put up in a safe, or somewhere children cannot get to, the house is still a safe place. Therefore, if the school did allow the teachers to obtain a gun somewhere in the classroom, intruders would be less likely to show up because they know it is the whole school against the single, or few intruders. Teachers will only be allowed to be armed at school if they have a concealed weapons permit, CWP, and are thoroughly trained on how to use a gun. Teachers will be required to go through a drill once a month on how they should hand the situation if an intruder were to come into the building, as well as how they should handle a gun and when they should use the gun. Due to only
Gun violence in schools is a very serious problem in America. More and more shootings are occurring, and no matter what has been done to try to prevent these shootings they still occur. The current methods being utilized to prevent gun violence in schools are not very successful, because school shootings are still occurring. To better prevent gun violence in schools and in general the United States must reinforce gun knowledge, security, and the laws that are already in place.
There are many different views concerning the possession of weapons and firearms on school property and the actions that should be taken to better protect the children attending school. Many people seem to either clearly be for or against these ideas of this policy. Furthermore, people either feel it is necessary to arm the staff of the school to stop potential threats and others believe that guns have no place in schools unless they are carried by the protecting police officer of the schools.
How would you feel if your child was to come home and tell you that, that one angry grumpy teacher is now allow to carry a gun to school? That seems pretty mediocre, I know if I was to have a child I wouldn’t be ok with it. Some politicians are trying to decide on rather or not should teachers be allowed to carry guns to school for protection. Due to the recent gun incidents in the schools all across the world, politicians are really considering rather teachers should be equipped with guns to protect theirselves and the children under their supervision. I personally don’t think that this is such a great idea, as a matter of fact it’s ludicrous. Teachers shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns in the school because the generation isn’t quite ready for that change in history, that’s the reason we have resource officers in the schools, and adding another gun to situation isn’t going to always be a good solution .
know before you go off to college. You parents do the same thing, in a way, so as a parent they want the kids to be safe as much as possible. If the school is that dangerous, just have better security around the school. Have more police than usual guard the school. The kids may still feel uneasy about this, but that is better than having a teacher possessing a gun, because the police are trained with firearms and will make better decisions. They are used to being in chaotic situations, and usually make the right decisions on the fly with things as dangerous as guns and killers. A teacher is not ready for that, a few lives could be taken before the teachers reacts and stops the murder.
Kids get their hands on anything they can grab, whether it is food or a phone. So why would they not get their hands on a gun? “According to FBI homicide data, of the 1,448 children who died as a result of gun violence in 2010, 165 of those deaths were at the hands of other children” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea). Yes, trained teachers would keep firearms out of reach, but having them available in the classroom increases the chances of something to go wrong. “Having guns within reach of children is an invitation for them to use them” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea).
Texas has passed a new law that allows students with a gun license to carry guns in universities and colleges. This law has brought different points of view in the public’s eye. In one side, people are criticism this law because they think it would lead to more arguments and danger for the people who are in these establishments. On the other side, people think with this new law, students are going to be protected in case that any altercations happen. However, so far, students have showed that not everybody has the knowledge to know when it is proper to use a gun. After the law was passed, it seems like shooting in schools haven’t stopped. On the contrary, it seems like more students know that they have the power to use their guns at any time.
