After high school, I did not see myself going to college because I didn’t apply myself academically. The saying “college isn’t for everybody” which I thought applied to me since high school was a struggle for me. During the time I was working in the fast food chain, I befriended an older lady who encouraged me to think about my life whether I wanted to have a job all my life or a career. As a result, of receiving that motivation I put my two weeks’ notice in a searched for a school I would like to apply and possibly attend. Also my gap year encourage me to look into enrolling because I wasn’t happy with working a minimum wage job when I didn’t have to a could’ve been doing anything else. By taking a year off I seen my friend’s getting intern positions and opportunities outside of school. However, my gap year was coming to a close and my options were running out I had to make a choice. I didn’t choose college just because I was running out of time, I chose it so I can experience college and the opportunities that can be created. …show more content…
There are 3 main things that will keep me motivated while in school: my mother, goals, and major.
My mother knew that I was afraid of going to school because I didn’t feel like I was smart enough, but she motivated me to at least try school before I write it off. Before I started school I wrote down some goals I would like to change during my college career. My first goal is to be more confident academically, lack of academic confidence is the reason I didn’t want to enroll. Second goal is to the best student I can be; by that I mean actually trying my best rather than doing the bare minimum. Third goal, don’t give up when things get rough for me. My passion for environmental science is my motivation while in school, because I have the opportunity to learn more about my
major. After all of my motivation to continue and finish school. I need a plan on how I will stay motivated. Scheduling my course work and important dates on a calendar. By me writing down everything that’s due and coming up it will motivate me to stay on track. Also using a portable planner will help me when I am not around my calendar at home. It will motivate me to stay more organize individual. Since starting the course I haven’t talk to my advisor often; however, I am going to start contact her more because they truly understand the struggles of college. By contacting her more will motivate me to be more social with not just her, my instructor, and classmates.
Dale Stephens argues that college isn’t right for everyone. He acknowledges that he left college because he believed that higher education isn’t everything. Dale clarifies that college is expensive. He refers to College Board Policy Center because tuition is about 3.6 times higher today than it was 30 years ago. He brings up good points but bases his ideas off his own opinions not facts. This is a strong argument because when the tuition is higher, it will be harder for and more people to pay for it. This encourages others to look for an alternative path to follow.
Is college worth it? Is college worth the time and energy you invest? This is a question that many students ask themselves as the cost of college rises and jobs are harder to find. As a 27 year, old college student myself I really thought about this question. I had to think back when I first started college at the age of 18 and how I was excited about starting college. I easily got tired of all the work that it took to get the degree so I dropped out. After having my first child and trying to work and take of her and myself with only making minimal wages, barely get by that when I knew college is worth it. A college education is one of the most reliable paths to financial success for students and gives the opportunity
Many people find the higher education a child receives, the higher the amount of money he or she will earn. Others find it is a waste of time and money to go to college after high school because of all the loans they would have to make up for after college. Many people have different point of views regards to the importance of college. In the articles Is College Worth It? and Why College Isn’t for Everyone, Leonhardt and Matthews have different opinions on the importance of college. Leonhardt argues that college is worth it because one who earns a college degree will be financially stable in the end, while Matthews believes that college isn’t for everyone because of the high-cost teenagers and adults will encounter when it comes to tuitions and fees.
After graduation of my high school, I’ve decided not to attend college. I spent over three months preparing for college admissions. Over three months of studying for the SAT and writing essays for colleges. But, all this hard work was blown away in just a week. The week before the May 1st, the decision day, I had made my decision not to attend college. I have decided to return to my country and start working. Of course, there was a strong disagreement from my parents, but I didn’t hesitate. For the past years, I have worked in many different kinds of places and I have faced the true reality. This made me want to attend college and brought me to Concordia College.
High school is now coming to an end for a lot of us. We are now coming to the age for looking at different colleges and what we want to do with our future this is the time that we are making these astronomical choices in our lives. In the article “Why Everyone Shouldn't Go To College?” By Larry Cuban it got republished at the Washington Post. He expresses his views on college. Larry Cuban is very persuasive as he makes us believe why everyone should not go to college. He has outstanding credibility and he knows how to grab the reader's attention. Also, he keeps the reader intrigued by using valuable fasts throughout the post. Even though some people would not agree on his thought process Larry Cuban opened up and took a risk in the society
Society pushes today's youth towards higher education. The goal of grade school is to prepare the students for middle school. The goal of middle school is to prepare the students for high school. And finally the goal of high school is to prepare the students for college. The entire structure of education is to prepare youth for the next level of education. The problem with this system is that not all students are college material, as seen in the essay The Case Against College by Caroline Bird.
Honestly college at this certain point in time does not seem worth it. Everywhere else in the world college is free but the United States. People would feel more motivated to go to college if it was free. College is the main reason Americans are having to live such a hard lifestyle. My father did not go to college and makes eighteen dollars an hour. On the other hand my aunt did go to college and make twenty-four dollars an hour but is still paying back student loans so after paying all of her stuff back she only makes around fifteen dollars an hour that she gets to bring back and that doesn’t include taxes. That’s the reason college doesn’t seem like a good choice to make in life.
College is said to be the gateway to a successful career, and I think no different. One of the main reasons I want a college education is so when I approach an employer they see me and think success. Studies have shown that when you have a college degree you are more likely to make an average 20 thousand more a year. If I was awarded this scholarship money it would completely change things for me; I say this because my family has struggled financially and with this I would be saved from crippling debt in years to come. Another reason a college degree is important to me is because I am striving for financial success so that I do not have to struggle like my parents have. In life money is what makes the world go round, and with a college degree I would be placed in a position where I would be able to achieve a level of financial security that would support myself, and hopefully a
One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Going to college is not the best choice for every high school graduate because many students cannot handle college, colleges’ lower standards, and not all jobs require a college degree.
College is one of the most expensive things most people will do in their life. With that being said, should everyone go to college? The experience may not be for everyone. Particularly if it’s something you can’t pay off in the long run. Most people’s families will help them out as much as possible with the expenses of college. Most people can’t afford college out of pocket so they rely on loans from the government. How long will it take for a student to pay off the loans they accrue of the time in college; how many years will the student be going to college? The student could also choose to get an associates’ degree rather than a bachelor’s. How would their yearly income differ from if the student had chosen to get the bachelor’s? Sometimes a student won’t need to go to college for their education to be able to do the career they’d like. Should the student go to college for an associates’ degree for the experience or would it just be a waste of money?
Having a college degree in today’s world is very important because more companies and businesses are requiring that anyone they hire has at least a two-year college degree, which is also known as an Associate 's degree. High school graduates and other people who have had thoughts about going to college should do so because it is getting harder for just a high school graduate to get a job, this is a result of hiring companies and businesses don’t want anyone without a college degree. Having a college degree will open more opportunities for the future. By doing so they further their lives and create a future that they want.
In the reading “Who Goes to College” written by Cecilia Rodriguez Milanes I was able to see myself in her situation. When she was a senior she had no idea what she was going to do her following year, all she knew was that her parents wanted her to attend college. She always wanted to work, she liked being able to provide for herself but her parents always told her that college would come first. She had no clue of how college worked, what classes she would take or what she would do there. After all the confusion she had of what college truly is, she began to love it. I believe that Cecilia Rodriguez chose the right path, even though she was not completely sure of what she wanted to do she always worked hard and never let any obstacle put her
When I began my senior year, the number one thing which people asked me was where I was going to college. Whether they actually knew me or not, that would be the first thing they asked once they found out I was in the final stretch of my high school career. Now, I obviously had a pre-planned answer for them, since I had answered the question so many times, but I always found it to be peculiar that people didn’t actually care at all about what I was going to do with my life; they just wanted to know where I was going to get my expensive piece of paper from.
College is a very important thing. If you go to college you will most likely get better pay in your career. Also, with a college degree, you have more opportunities. I believe that everyone should go to college. If you don’t go to college and just go into some job and that fails then you have no backup plan. A college graduate is more likely to be offered employment than another who didn’t attend college, if you have a college degree you will make more money in your lifetime than someone who doesn’t have a degree, if you are considering having children having a college degree is very beneficial to them, you have a higher chance of having better health yourself, college is very beneficial, and if you go to college you will have a better social
A college education is necessary today in society. Students can focus on their academics and try to get a high score. The cost of education for each student has become more difficult to afford. Thus, many students and teachers wonder if free college tuition must be granted. Free education must be responsible and funded by the U.S. government because it will help students focus on their studies, and encourage them to work harder in school. Even thought many people think that education must be free, it is very important for many reasons such as the economy, quality of education, and value of a college degree.
