Explain Why Charlie Was Better Off Before Surgery

Charlie was better off before the surgery for many reasons. He was not as concerned about life or aware of what was really going on around him. He was way more positive before and he was better with people. He may he been slow, but he probably did not want to trade his smarts for his “friends” and happy life. Charlie was better off before the surgery because he was already at the lowest of the low.. One main reason that I believe that Charlie was better off before is that he had nothing to lose. Before he had the surgery he was already low in intelligence and he could not understand much. In Progress Report 2 he says, “ Ill get it in a few minits becaus im not so fast sometimes. im a slow reader in Miss Kinnians class for slow adults but im trying very hard.” This shows that he already is slow. Charlie was also better off before surgery because he was to innocent to understand society. He was always happy and positive in most of what he was doing. In Progress Report 8 it says,” Thier my friends and they like me.” Truly Joe and Frank were not really his friends. They only wanted to make fun of him and laugh at him, but he believed that they laughed with him and not at him. Once he had the surgery, he gained so much knowledge that no one understood. Also, he liked his job and no one was intimidated by his intelligence. He could talk to Miss Kinnean, Frank and Joe, even if they were not always kind, and other co-workers. In Progress Report 8, Charlie says,”Im glad Im going back to work because I miss all my friends and all the fun we had there.” When Charlie was only in Miss Kinnean’s class for slow adults, he was slow, but had nothing to lose.
