In my life I had never thought about what counted more actions or words. However, now I firmly realize how much more actions can speak than words. Because you can say you’re going to do something great, but it won’t be very impressive than if you actually did it which is why actions are way more effective than words. For example, when you come in your math class and tell your teacher I am going to pass the test from today with a one-hundred. Your teacher probably won’t care that you said that, because the words are meaningless if you don’t commit to what you said you would do. But if you had not said anything to your teacher and just done it, the outcome probably would have been better. Because you’re stupendous grade would have been more of
a pleasant surprise to your teacher. Plus if you really want to do something and show people the best manner to do it in is by taking action and doing that is the best way your voice will be heard. In summary, while just talking about something can lead you to be unheard, taking action towards something can pave the way towards something even greater, than just talking about it.

Many people believe verbal communication to be a very powerful way of expressing oneself. Words gain there power when the volume is raised and lowered alternatively to make a point. Additionally, the influence of speech can manifest itself in a number of ways. It can be used to humiliate, to intimidate, to flirt and to threaten, all of which are integral and pragmatic strategies to win a power struggle.
Often of times, many of us speak without giving thought to how our words and the manner in which we speak will affect ourselves or another person. Regardless of how insignificant and harmless a few words and the tone we emphasize may seem, both hold power. In a moment, they have the power to either build up and give life or tear down and give death. In a moment, they have the power to shape and characterize the behaviors and values of both societies and individuals alike. In a single moment, they have the power to span beyond the individual who spoke it and cause, whether good or bad, repercussions that will affect a multitude of generations ahead.
Before we can look at how grading affects learning Farber suggests we look at how it has affected students (333-334). The greatest effect of being graded happens to the individual. Farber asks, “Did you need grades to learn how to drive?” We have become “grade junkies.” Without the grades students can’t learn (333). Vogel agrees that students believe grades are the motivating factor in learning, but only for the money. Students want the grades because high GPA’s equal high paying jobs (338-339). Another negative effect of grades is that students want the best grade with the least amount of learning but this causes conflict with professors because the professor’s goal is different compared to the student’s (339). Grades have positive effects too. Farber believes that grades give us discipline, but not self-discipline. True self-discipline comes from wanting something not coercion (334). Farber defines self-discipline as revising one paragraph all night because one enjoys it (334.)
“The Man Who Was Almost A Man” is a disappointing story, written by Richard Wright, that reveals the sad truth about how people tend to define themselves by what they own of tangible power such as money or weapons. In the story Dave did the same. He defined himself as a man when he bought the gun. I think most people, especially in their teenage years, just like Dave, start to believe that they are adults. They do what they think is right, but they end up paying the prices of their mistakes. The reason behind rushing into adulthood is that teenagers feel insecure about who they are. At times, parents treat them as kids and at some other times, they treat them as adults. Unable to decide what they are, instead of searching for answers within themselves, they tend to look for answers around them. They end up looking at what they own and define themselves according to it.
While I was in high school I noticed that one of my classmates was about to cheat on the constitution test. Though I disapproved of him doing so I just decided not to negotiate by discussing the problem with him or by informing anyone to prevent it from happening. This decision was out of concern for myself, contemplatively I can see that a lot of circumstances related to that particular situation led me to make that decision that I made for that situation.
Noise can be of external, physiological or psychological nature. External noises can include loud sounds and visual distractions that result in the misinterpretation of a message. Physiological noise includes distractions such as hunger or illness, as well as physiological disabilities or impairments in the sender or receiver of a message. Psychological noises are internal noises such personal values and ideas, rapid thought or as in my situation, language differences that limit the minds ability to interpret messages effectively. When these noises interfere with an encoded message, the receiver cannot provide accurate feedback, causing miscommunication and confusion, much like that cause by the language barrier between the two boys and I. I worked around this issue generally by keeping instructions or comments very basic, and clarifying with the boys if they understood me. However what I did not realise at the time is the power that non-verbal interactions can have on communication.
