What age should a person be considered responsible enough to call themselves and be called an adult? People have debated whether the lawmakers and governments have set the ages for certain things such as smoking and drinking, even getting a driver’s license, too high or too low. The age of responsibility and being considered an adult shouldn’t depend on a fixed age; it should depend on the level of responsibility a person has. Kids are expected to act as adults while still being treated like children, today’s teens are being more pressured to grow up faster than they should be, and everyone develops differently, but elders aren't being called into question even though some lack more mastery skills than young people. Nowadays, kids and teens are being expected to act as adults, but how are they going to do that while they are still being treated as 5 year olds? “...young people are bombarded with mixed signals about the scope of their rights and the depth of their …show more content…
“The fact that every person is different and develops at his own pace doesn’t make the creation of policy any easier.” (Greenblatt 22) Take driving for example. A lot of young people are getting pulled over and getting called into question for no apparent reason, but adults haven’t even been pulled over when running a red light or speeding. “While nearly every state recently has put new limits on teen drivers, no state has begun restricting―or even testing― elderly drivers, some whom may, like teens, lack mastery of their vehicles.” (Greenblatt 11) Teens and young people are being watched more when it comes to having their GDL, graduated driver’s license (more likely known as a permit), than older drivers. Robert Epstein, a psychologist and author of Teen 2.0, completed a study of over 30,000 people stating and showing that thirty percent of American teenagers are more competent than the median adult in a variety of
The age of responsibility is a time when adolescents become an adult and are put on with the responsibilities that they will have for the rest of your life. In the article “Age of Responsibility” by Alan Greenblatt they question what age is considered the age of responsibility? There is no set age that is considered the age of responsibility because everyone develops differently and at different times so there is no set age.
It is ironic that how some children are able to present themselves more mature than adults. The youth of the generation is becoming more mature and are developing adult skills faster than ever. People are beginning to wonder about the age of adulthood and how it should be determined. This controversy beleaguers around privileges such as drinking, driving, and voting. According to the article What is the Age of Responsibility by Alan Greenblatt, society determines that a person is an adult through customary rites, legal rights, and one’s responsibilities. However, I believe that the best way to adulthood is shown through one’s obligation for their priorities and work.
Also, studies show that the same bad behavior commonly seen in men in their twenties is seen in sixteen and seventeen year olds. Driving is a huge part of a teenager’s social life, too. They need licenses to attend school, work, or social events. So, a way to keep the driving age at sixteen and have better driving on the road is to have a graduated driver license. This GDL would make it so new drivers would gain experience driving under supervision of an older, experienced driver before they can drive on their own.
If you had told me when I turned sixteen that I couldn’t get my license until I turned eighteen, I would have thrown a fit. Now that I am older, I realize that I had no business driving an automobile at 16 years old. I was the typical teenage driver. The cool one, who had the “Detroit lean,” with the seat tilted so far back that I couldn’t see over the dashboard, and could only reach the pedals with my big toe. There’s no way I could hear emergency sirens with the music being turned up so loud that it caused my mirrors shake.
Getting a driver’s license is one of the most exciting experiences a teenager goes through. The freedom of being able to go wherever one wants is both exciting and liberating. If state legislature passed a bill that made it illegal for teens to obtain a driver’s license before getting a high school diploma, the effects would be detrimental. As a teenage driver myself, I understand firsthand that if I was not able to drive, I would feel like I was being deprived of part of the teenage experience. This is why I believe that restricting a driver’s license to only those with a high school diploma could negatively affect teens by reducing their sense of freedom, prohibiting important driving practice before college, and by complicating the parents
Even though teenagers often make dangerous decisions behind the wheel, most drive without adult supervision when they first obtain their license. With the immaturity of teens combined with the lack of driving skills, disasters are still occurring. Although most teens believe their driving is becoming safer, it is a lie. States are taking charge by giving out driving curfews to teens; fourteen states have set limits as to how many passengers may be allowed in the vehicle with young drivers. Although teenagers go through tests and programs before obtaining a full license, teens are not fully prepared; therefore, teens are causing dangerous events to take place.
Kids, how old are they are to really be classified as adults. The normal age to be classified as an adult is at age 18. But, maybe we should change the age limit for children. Kids should be classified as adults at age 25.
However, what the older generations choose to neglect is that not only is our generation expanding our horizons, but we’re also doing so while making smarter and safer decisions. For example, a recent survey conducted by the US federal government shows that today’s teens are behaving vastly better than their predecessors, with 24% less teens smoking cigarettes, 17.2% less teens having tried alcohol and 15.6% more teens regularly wearing seatbelts (Kliff, et al., 2016). Despite the statistics proving that we’re doing so a lot more responsibly, our elders are doing whatever they can to prevent us from doing anything that could be considered as potentially
Teenagers should become adults when they feel they are ready after 18, because some don’t feel prepared and they think they are and they get no ware all because they didn’t feel prepared. When you turn 18, you can start making your own chooses. Where am I going to live, what am I going to do, when am I going to sign up for collage. You start to think more about your future more than when you are little because you’re not a little kid, you are becoming an adult. Here is what a mom thinks when is the right age to becoming an adult, “If you asked my 12-year-old daughter, the magical age would be 13 — the age when you're officially a teenager and can no longer be considered a "child." If you asked my 15-year-old niece, the age would be 16 — that's when she will be able to drive a car and get an after-school job. According to the U.S.
When do kids become adults? When has the maturity level reached its highest point? When do people become mature? It is commonly debated that you are not mature until you are a “real” adult. The legal age of adulthood in the United States is 18. In comparison, the ages of consent in Europe are between the ages of 14 and 18. As you can see, people believe different ages are qualified for you to be a legal adult. I don’t believe that age is the specific reason for people to become adults. I believe it depends on their maturity level, not their age.
If a teens learns about the road at the age of 18 they won’t know as much as a teen who started learning at the age of 16. Also teens are considered adults at the age of 18 which means that they don’t have to go through drivers ed and can drive whenever they want; but this is what causes car accidents to happen, non-knowledgeable people on the road. In source 2 it says “They found that tougher licensing laws have led to 1,348 fewer fatal car crashes involving 16-year-old drivers. But during the same period, fatal crashes involving 18-year-old drivers increased. They were behind the wheel in 1,086 more fatal accidents.” (Aubrey pg. 256 lines 21-25) These lines show how 18-year-olds that didn’t have the same knowledge as younger drivers got into more accidents, due to them not knowing the rules of the
Firstly, everyone has gone or will go through the teenage rebellion phase. No matter how good of a person you think you are, you have probably rebelled against an elder person at least once. Once hormones have revealed it-self, children turn into confused young adults that think they can do everything by themselves and that there will be no longer any need of nurture from adults. The word “young” from “Young adults” are what teenagers completely ignore, when actually they should do the opposite and ignore the “adults” part.
Many kids anticipate turning sixteen years old so they can drive a car. No more being driven around by parents and older siblings all the time. After passing a vision test, a written test, and a driving test, a license is granted. There are several things that can affect one's ability to drive. As people age, their eyesight deteriorates, their ability to react weakens, and their overall sense of what is going on around them diminishes. Once drivers reach the age of 65, their license renewals should include testing, and their competency should be reviewed more frequently to protect the safety of the drivers and those around them.
Becoming an adult, also known as young adulthood, is a very crucial stage in one’s life. This is the climax of physical and health processes. This is the point in life when we make plans of our futures. It is the time when we think of what life will be like as an adult and make plans for the future. Most importantly, it is when we lay the starting point for developmental changes that we will undergo throughout our lives. An adult is a person who is fully grown or developed. Some people believe that you become an adult when you are 18 years old, other believe you are an adult when you can legally buy and consume alcohol, that is, at age 21 in the United States. Others believe that you are an adult when you are supporting yourself
There are countless problems all around us, some large others just daily problems that won’t matter in two years like what to wear tomorrow. A bit of a bigger problem that has impacted more rather than a few is driving. Teens have to get rides to all sorts of places because they cannot drive themselves. This is a problem for those of kids who participate in extracurricular activities and also to those who like to be with friends and out and about. Some rely on their older siblings and others on parents but that is not a slight bit fun for the chauffer. “A driver’s license gives you a certain level of freedom, but it also gives you an enormous amount of responsibility.” (Campbell) This problem for teens has a main solution, for teens to be able to drive sooner, there is less teen accidents comparing to the last ten years, teens could prove themselves responsible if given the chance.
