There are many ways for how to promote positive behaviour with children and young people. It is important that children grow up to be good adults and therefore they have to learn from a young age how to behave in public.
As a teacher it is important to be a role model to the children. Those children see you every day for a couple of hours and they see what you are doing. Therefore it is important to behave correctly.
The children see everything you are doing and are likely to copy you. The strength of this is, that the children can see where they would like to stand in the future. A teacher can show them what it means to be an adult and that they have to work hard in school to achieve that. A weakness would be that children really copy everything.

Listening is also an important tool that promotes positive behaviour. It doesn’t matter if it is a child or an adult. You should always listen to them without interrupting or pre- judging them. It is a powerful tool that makes the children feel that there is someone who listens to them. The strength of listening is that you get information from the children or adult. With that you can work on the next step. The weakness is that you often don’t have the time to listen to everyone. A school day only has a couple of hours and normally you are very busy. Therefore it is vital to take some time where you can listen to others.
Keeping your word is another important tool as this shows the child that you have listened and you took action to solve the problem or task. The strength is, that you know the needs of the children and they accept and trust you when you are listening. The weakness is that you can’t always listen to all the long stories from each child.

There may be times were you unintentionally brush aside what a child is saying perhaps it is because you are preoccupied or tired, however, even this can be enough to make a child feel unvalued. Being responded to appropriately reinforces a child's self-esteem. This will in turn help build a trusting relationship. Talking with children, asking and answering questions also helps build their language skills. If pupils are distressed and need to talk about it, they will more likely open up to the person who has made them feel that they have a voice. Sometimes as a teacher we try and do well but sometimes we actually end up hindering. So it is important to understand the child’s perspective so avoid such hindrance. If a student misbehaves in class, revisit the standards and give reasons as to why their behavior is unacceptable, also focus on why and how their behavior caused harm or distress to other students or the teacher. All we need to do is to be open and relaxed, listen to children, take them seriously and ask them questions. The more we do this, the more we will gain their trust and allow them to talk about and explore what they are really thinking. As a teacher in early childhood development, I believe that the teacher skills and personality influence how children understand, observe and react to the classroom environment and the world around them. Even though part of teacher responsibilities are academic, daily interactions that encourage social, emotional and physical development are important. One of a quality effective early childhood educators’ characteristic is that they should have patience.
Secondly, students will develop mistrust between the teacher and themselves. They will doubt the teacher’s thoughts and commands, creating a space of distress and distrust. Things will not be able to get done in class. Thirdly, the students will establish resistance among peers and other teachers. The students will oppose, defy, and refuse to listen to the teacher.

Education is not only about teaching our subject whether it be Chemistry, English or Algebra, but teaching our students how to be productive human beings within society. I think that one of the greatest things that I can do for my kids is to take them seriously and listen to them.
