Exchange Rates

“For many years it has been believed that if countries import more than they export and so have a deficit on the current account of the balance of payments then their currencies will tend to fall in value. Yet over the last two years the dollar has been a strong currency even though USA has had a record current account deficit. How can this fact be explained? What does it tell us about the factors, which determine exchange rates? What policy decisions with regard to exchange rates do you think USA and other governments should take in response to these developments?”
Exchange rates
Exchange Rate, in relation to foreign exchange of money, is the price of a country's currency expressed in terms of one unit of another country's currency. The Foreign Exchange rate indicates the value of any given currency relatively to another. Thus, a pound sterling note is money in the United Kingdom, but is foreign exchange in the U.S.
The use of foreign exchange arises because different nations have different monetary units, and the currency of one country cannot be used for making payments in another country. Because of trade, travel, and other transactions between individuals and business enterprises of different countries, it becomes necessary to convert money into the currency of other countries in order to pay for goods or services in those countries. The transfer of money values from one country to another and the determination of the price at which the currency of one country will be surrendered for that of another constitute the main problems of foreign exchange. Foreign exchange is a commodity, and its price fluctuates in accordance with supply and demand. Exchange rates are published daily in the principal newspapers of the world. By international agreement fixed exchange rates with a narrow margin of fluctuation existed until 1973, when floating rates were adopted that fluctuate as supply and demand dictate.
Balance of Payments
Balance of Payments is the relationship between the amounts of money a nation spends abroad and the income it receives from other nations. The balance of payments is officially known as the Statement of International Transactions and includes two main accounts. The first, the current account, tracks activity in merchandise trade - exporting and importing, income earned from inves...

...on in 1991 but rose to $345.6 billion in 1999 (BoP).
Much of the improvement in the U.S. trade deficit between 1987 and 1991 resulted from a depreciation of the dollar and the recession in 1990-1991. The multilateral trade-weighted real value of the U.S. dollar reached a high in 1985, then dropped sharply from 1986 through 1988.
However, the worsening of the deficit in 1993-95 can be attributed primarily to the faster recovery from recession in the United States than in Europe or Japan. In 1997-99, the Asian financial crisis caused a sizable fall in U.S. exports to Asia and a marked increase in U.S. imports from Asia.
The broadest measure of U.S. international economic transactions is the balance on current account. In addition to merchandise trade, it includes trade in services and unilateral transfers. The current account deficit increased in 1999 to a record $331.5 billion from $217.1 billion in 1998. After reaching a peak of $160.7 billion in 1987, the current account deficit had fallen steadily through 1991 when it reached a surplus of $6.6 billion. Economic projections indicate that the current account deficit may reach between $430-$450 billion in 2000.
In 1893, the United States experienced its first major depression in the Panic of 1893. The stock market crashed, which led to a fall in the banking system. The depression caused many businesses to look overseas, and because of this foreign trade was an astounding $1.4 billion by 1900. The depression ...
High Schools in the United States should not ban The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This book is one of the most important components of American literature in our libraries today, it throws the reader into a time when slavery was lawful and accepted, and gives the reader a new perspective on slavery in general. Until civil rights groups can come up with a better argument than the word “nigger” creating a “hostile work environment”(Zwick) it should not be taken off the required reading list of any High School in the country.
Okonkwo associates many of his tribal influences with masculinity. Right away in the book, Achebe affiliates strength with manliness. “As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalizine the Cat” (3). He is honored because he had enough strength and agility to overthrow the cat. Okonkwo feels to be successful and manly, one also must show no emotion. He thinks emotion is for the weak and for woman, and he does not want to be either of those. “Okonkwo never showed any emotion openly, unless it be the emotion of anger. To show affection was a sign of weakness,-the only thing worth demonstrating was strength” (28). Okonkwo treats Ikemefuna with this idea. He becomes very fond of the child, but never outwardly shows his affection. If he showed his affection he was afraid he would be looked down upon in his tribe. Although his father enjoyed little things like music and dancing, Okonkwo had no desire to share his father’s enjoyment. He desired power and wealth. He wants to construct and maintain a big house for his many wives and even more children. “Okonkwo was clearly cut out for great things. He was still young but he had won fame as the greatest wrestler in the nine villages. He was a wealthy farmer and had two barns full of ...
In chapter 6, Pap (a character in the novel) said this: “There was a free nigger there from Ohio—a mulatter, most as white as a white man. He had the whitest shirt on you ever see, too, and the shiniest hat; and there ain't a man in that town that's got as fine clothes as what he had; and he had a gold watch and chain, and a silver-headed cane” (27) This quote from the novel very strongly demonstrates the fact that black ...
Masculinity is a major theme in Things Fall Apart. The epitome of masculinity and power is Okonkwo himself. As a high village elder, he exemplifies the coveted attributes of
Like Piaget, Erikson continued on the belief that children develop in a predetermined order. He studied how children socialize and in what manner their socialization affects their sense of self. Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development has eight distinct stages, each with two possible outcomes. The theory states that successful completion of each stage results in a healthy personality and successful interactions with others. Failure to complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to complete further stages and therefore a more unhealthy personality and sense of self. These stages, however, can be resolved successfully at a later time. I wanted to test both Piaget and Erikson’s theory and see if I can identify them in children of six and seven years of age.

To put it simply, the exchange rate is a price. As with any other market, price is determined by supply and demand. Whenever they are not equivalent, the exchange rate would change. However, the reality comes to be far more complicated.
(Batra & Beladi, 2013) explains that it is well known to that nations that have high trade deficits have higher interest rates than those with balanced trade or surplus. They explain that this is now what has been happening with the United States, which has had a bad trade deficit since 1982. The United States interest rates have been lower than those in several other trade-surplus nations, however the rates did fall even as the trade “shortfall” went up. This generated an interest rate “paradox”. Batra & Beladi, also explains that unlike other nations, the trade deficit that continues to rise is the cause of lower United States interest rates and it happened because of the “world’s strong interest in maintaining a high value of the dollar” (Batra & Beladi, 2013).
Okonkwo’s struggle with masculinity and femininity less him to his demise because he becomes aggressive to his family. There is a quote in which it describes his Okonkwo actions towards his family, “Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and weakness” (Achebe, 10). This quote resembles Okonkwo’s true self. In reality his whole life was dominated of fear of being womanly. In his opinion he believes that being manly was the only option. He allowed the idea to consume him and the lingering fear of failure make him into a different person. Consequently this becomes Okonkwo to brome irrational with his actions. For instance in one scene Ekwefi the second lied to calm his anger towards his youngest ...

In this essay, I will analyse the different types, geochemistry, constitution, identifying characteristics and consequential activity levels of volcanoes, with a particular focus on Stratovolcanoes and how they compare to the other known types and specifically the magma constituency, viscosity levels and mineral content when compared to that of other types of volcano.
Okonkwo was introduced as an accomplished and ambitious man, known far and wide for his rapid rise to fame. Of all his attributes, he most widely was known for his strength, he was introduced with a wrestling match that ended in Okonkwo’s victory against someone formerly undefeated. Immediately afterwards, he was physically described as tall and strong. This emphasizes one of Okonkwo’s most recognizable traits. His masculinity. Often associated with this trait, was his fiery temper, immediately after his physical description, Okonkwo was described as an impatient person that pounced on others often, a person that “...whenever he was angry… he would use his fists.” (Pg. 4) . Due to these traits, many, even his son Nwoye, feared Okonkwo. These traits and his belief that showing affection is showing weakness, lead to the constant suppression of another important trait of Okonkwo, his fondness for those he respect and love. Though some of these traits were suppressed, all of them were reflected to a great extent in his interactions with those closest to him.
