My Three Favorite Scenes
The movie Excalibur is a story about a king that is later known as the best king, but we still aren’t sure if he was a real person or just imaginary. We are taught a lot about middle english through the reading and watching of Excalibur. One main thing that we are taught through Excalibur is the code of the knights. The code of the knights was to serve and protect your king while respecting everyone. While watching this movie I learned a lot about something that I look at as pointless at the beginning of the year. Many things in this movie have made me open my eyes and see the true meaning behind somethings. I have come on some of my favorite scenes that show the strengths of many people. The scene that first caught

Arthur is tricked to sleep with his step sister and she later gave birth to a son named Mordred, who is later known as the worst villain of all times. When Mordred is born Arthur is strucken and becomes very ill. He tells his knights that they need to find the holy grail because drinking from that is the only thing that will heal him. Arthur knows that it's going to be a hard tasks and after a year the grail is still nowhere to be found. Sir Gawain one of Arthur's best knights that sits at the round table, rides for what seems like forever when coming upon Mordred. Who Gawain doesn’t know is Arthur’s son, Mordred talks him into following him through the woods where there are other Knight’s corpse hanging from trees. Gawain later come to Mordred’s mom and she uses spells to try and kill him. While Gawain is hanging slowly dying he see God and is given the holy grail. This is one of my favorite scenes because they search for a year to find something that was thought to be gone. Gawain shows his worth as a knight and doesn't give up on finding the holy grail to save his king. Even though the movie Excalibur was a good movie every person will look at it in different ways. This movie has taught me a lot about how important the knights code was to the knights that fought to protect their king. The story behind excalibur is one that is full of many different story. There are many interesting scenes in this movie but I find theses three the best scene because they tell you the biggest story. They have done a lot of research to see if there was such thing as Arthur and his great kingdom but, we still have found nothing to prove that it was
The Arthurian cycle shows a sporadic awareness of the impossibility of mere humans fulfilling all the ideals that Arthur and his court represent. The story of Lancelot and Guenevere, Merlin's imprisonment by Nimu‘, and numerous other instances testify to the recognition of this tension between the real and the unrealistic.
Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’arthur, T.H. White’s Once and Future King, and George Romero’s Knightriders encompass the evolution of the Arthurian tale from Malory’s time to the 1980s. Through this time many things have changed and these changes can be seen within the differences between each work. While there are many prominent differences chivalry or the knightly code is one of the main forces that tie these tales together. Malory reworks many of his sources to bring attention to the grand fellowship of Arthur’s Round Table and the chivalry that holds the knights together. Malory idealizes the power of chivalry and gives a great importance to it throughout his text. Unlike Malory, White does not idealize chivalry, but he does see the good and honorable aspects of chivalry. From Sprague Kurth’s article, “Conclusion,” it is clear to see that White gives his text an anti-war stance and shows chivalry and the controlling moral compass of Arthur’s knights. Chivalry is once again idealized in George Romero’s Knightriders the situations within the film are modernized but the emotions and illusions remain the same. T.H. White is directly referenced within the film and Malory’s idealization of the glory of chivalry can once again be seen. In my essay, I will show how chivalry is used in all the texts above as a bonding agent between all Arthurian knights. As Arthur’s knights honor and respect chivalry they remain as one cohesive group, but once they begin to abandon chivalry the Round Table begins to crumble and chaos ensues.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a fourteenth-century tale written by an anonymous poet, chronicles how Sir Gawain of King Arthur’s Round Table finds his virtue compromised. A noble and truthful knight, Gawain accepts the Green Knight’s challenge at Arthur’s New Years feast. On his way to the Green Chapel, Gawain takes shelter from the cold winter at Lord Bercilak’s castle. The lord makes an agreement with Gawain to exchange what they have one at the end of the day. During the three days that the lord is out hunting, his wife attempts to seduce Gawain. At the end of the story, it is revealed that Morgan le Faye has orchestrated the entire situation to disgrace the Knights of the Round Table by revealing that one of their best, Sir Gawain, is not perfect.
T.H. White's novel The Once and Future King presents a code of chivalry that outlines the expected knightly behavior of the time. This particular code stresses loyalty to one's liege, love and respect toward women, and absolute devotion to justice. At the height of Arthur's kingdom, this code was widely accepted by all. However, as Arthur's kingdom begins to decline, the code of chivalry begins to hold less importance among the people. The fall of Arthur's kingdom is directly related to the absence of the code of chivalry in the behavior of the Knights of the Round Table. Sir Lancelot betrays Arthur when he has an adulteress affair with Guenever. Sir Lancelot also disrespects women when he leaves Elaine to be with Guenever in Camelot. King Arthur himself is disloyal to justice when he allows Guenever to be rescued by Lancelot.
The film Monty Python and the Holy Grail satirizes the medieval “epic hero” through parodying actual heroes in medieval literature. The comedy film displays important medieval values in a humorous light and pokes fun at Arthurian legends. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and other tales of Arthur’s Knights of the Round table are heavily parodied through out the film. The medieval tales often include the knight errant, or a knight who wandered the lands in search of chivalrous adventures, and throughout the film Arthur and his newly formed gang portray the knight errant as foolish and cowardly.
The story begins during the New Year's feast in King Arthur's court. Then a green knight enters asking all of the knights in the court if they would like to play a game. The game is he will allow which ever knight that chooses to challenge him one swing with a battle ax to try and chop off his head, but in order to play the game, the accepting knight must meet the green knight one year later at the green chapel. The brave knight Sir Gawain accepts to the challenge of the green knight. Sir Gawain takes one swing and chops off the head of the green knight. Right after the green knight's head is chopped off he gets up immediately, picks up his head and leaves. Once a year passes, Gawain sets off on a journey to find the Green Chapel. He arrives at a castle in which a lord welcomes him to stay for several days (Gawain only needs to stay there for three). The next morning the lord makes an agreement to share everything he gets during these three days with Gawain, but Gawain must agree to do the same. During days one and two the lord's wife tries hitting on Gawain, but he only allows her to give him a few kisses. At these days Gawain shares what he got to the lord for what he has hunted those days. On the third day, Gawain finally accepts to take a magic girdle from the lord's wife, but he didn't share it with the lord. This magic girdle helped Gawain survive the three fatal swing's of the green giant's ax, only leaving him with a little nick. After Gawain survives these 3 swings at his neck, the green knight then reveals his identity and explains that he is Bercilak, the lord of the castle. He also said that the three blows were taken at him in regards to the three days of their agreement.
“Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is a satiric comedy about the quest of King Arthur. The movie starts out with Arthur, King of the Britons, looking for knights to sit with him at Camelot. He finds many knights including Sir Galahad the pure, Sir Lancelot the brave, the quiet Sir Bedevere, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. Through satire and parody of certain events in history (witch trials, the black plague) they find Camelot, but after literally a quick song and dance they decide that they do not want to go there. While walking away, God (who seems to be grumpy) come to them from a cloud and tells them to find the Holy Grail. They agree and begin their search. While they search for the Grail, scenes of the knight's tales appear and the reasons behind their names. Throughout their search, they meet interesting people and knights along the way. Most of the characters die; some through a killer rabbit (which they defeat with the holy hand grenade), others from not answering a question right from the bridge of Death, or die some other ridiculous way. In the end, King Arthur and Sir Bedevere are left and find the Castle Arrrghhh where the Holy Grail is. They are met by some French soldiers who taunted them earlier in the film and were not able to get into the castle. The movie ends with both King Arthur and Sir Bedevere being arrested for killing a real-life man who was a historian.
There are many common themes mocked in the movie “Monty Python the Quest for the Holy Grail”. Religion, Knightly Behavior, Noble Quests etc. I believe the movie showed how the old stories and plays kind of exaggerated these themes, and they aren’t as mighty as they are made out to be. I think Knights and Kings weren’t really as bold and courageous as stories told and this movie kind of showed it. There are exceptions though, as in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, he took the challenge and stuck his neck out so no one else would have too and he did it bravely (he had a little bit of a scared moment) but he also admitted he was wrong for messing with the Green Knight’s wife. But in Monty Python, it showed how Knights also did things cowardly, as when Lancelot went to save the “damsel” in distress and killed almost everyone in the castle.
When Gawain shows up at the Green Knight’s chapel, his mere presence provides comfort to his host, who greets him: “Sir so sweet, you honour the trysts you owe.” Perhaps the green gallant had been expecting Gawain, as representative of the crumbling House of Arthur, to be derelict in his duties. Gawain lives up to his good name. Similarly, he resisted the unbearable temptations of Lady Bertilak on numerous occasions, providing a mere kiss, in accordance with the code of chivalry.
Once you see the Medieval Times Knight battle you will have a whole new appreciation for knights; a castle garden. It all started with the stairs. When it was time for the show to begin my family and I went to the grand staircase. Once we got there two trumpet players dressed in baggy pants and shirts started playing. Their trumpets were unusually long with banners on them. One banner had a lion's head on it and the other had a shield. The trumpet players played the most crisp and majestic sound I have ever heard. The sound rang through the castle and all of the crowds fell silent.
Sir Gawain is, undoubtably, the most varied of the Arthurian characters: from his first minor appearance as Gwalchmei in the Welsh tales to his usually side-line participation in the modern retelling of the tales, no other character has gone from such exalted heights (being regarded as a paragon of virtue) to such dismal depths (being reduced to a borderline rapist, murderer, and uncouth bore), as he. This degree of metamorphosis in character, however, has allowed for a staggering number of different approaches and studies in Gawain.
King Arthur was given a sword by The Lady of the lake. The sword, Excalibur is a magical sword. “Take thou here Excalibur my good sword and go with it yonder water’s side and tell me what you see.” (Le Morte d’ Arthur P. 191). Excalibur was a powerful sword give to him by a divinity. He used it to fight many powerful people. King Arthur was told to return the sword to the lady of the lake before he dies. Sir Bedivere refused to drop the magical sword into the lake because didn’t think anything good would come from it. “If I throw this rich sword in the water, thereof shall never come good, but harm and loss.” (Le Morte d’ Arthur
... monster, the Green Knight. This is key in testing his vow of honesty and ability to follow through with what he promises. Next, he is faced with the lord’s promiscuous wife. She attempts to seduce Gawain, a guest of her husband’s castle to test his ability to remain chaste. Gawain is finally tested for his respect of his earthly king, Arthur, and his heavenly king, Christ. Therefore, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is truly a test of faith, honesty, chastity and the knightly vow of chivalry.
Curiously, one seat in particular always remained empty at the Round Table, and it was reserved for the one who would find the Holy Grail. When that brave knight arrived in King Arthur's court and took his place in the Siege Perilous at the Round Table, the Quest for the Holy Grail began officially began. This knight was Sir Galahad. King Arthur, however, was not very excited for he feared the loss of many of his bravest and best knights. Indeed, many knights set forth on this noble quest, but only a few returned.
The first scene in the movie introduced the castle. This, I must say, was kind of strange. The whole setting was very confusing, was it supposed to be symbolic? Why was everyone there? Was it even the castle? I would have preferred if they made that setting a little clearer. Another problem I had with the setting was the fact that
