Chapter 10: It’s More Than Just Rain Or Snow The aspect of weather in a piece of literature is very important because it can give us insight into how the story will proceed and what will occur throughout the story itself. An example of this is in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. At the beginning of The Great Gatsby, we see that the narrator, Nick, describes how the sun is shining, the trees are producing new leaves, and the wind is softly blowing as the beginning of summer approaches. Throughout this series, Dumbledore sacrifices himself for the greater good, he faces the ‘devil’ himself, he cares for the well-being of all children, he regales stories and aphorisms, he has a large group of followers, and he forgives easily. Another instance of a Christ-figure characteristic that Dumbledore possesses is how he raises and treats all of the children of Hogwarts as his own and expects the very best from and each and every one of them. As well, Dumbledore also regales many stories that inherently tell a tale close to the problems that each student is having. Likewise, he gives many aphorisms such as “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.”, that help to let people know that here is always an upside to every situation. Additionally, Dumbledore has a giant group of followers, way more than twelve unfortunately, that call themselves DA or Dumbledore’s Army. Throughout the last two books they listen to the teachings and instructions of Dumbledore’s and learn the spells that will essentially help them in The Battle of Hogwarts that is forthcoming. He is in love with a woman named Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is Nick’s cousin and is married to Tom. She has had history with Gatsby before she got married to Tom. Tom Buchanan is a millionaire that lives in East Egg. He is rich because of his family name and He attended Yale with Nick. Jordan Baker is one of Daisy’s friends that is a professional golfer. She later ends up being Nick’s girlfriend for a while. George Wilson is a man that owns an auto shop and is married to Myrtle. Myrtle is Tom’s mistress that he fools around with. Lastly there was a man named Meyer Wolfshiem. He was known for fixing the 1919 World Series.
As easy as it may sound, learning to forgive and forget is much harder than it seems. Throughout F. Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is one of the most carefully structured stories of all time. The narrator, Nick, is a very clever and well spoken storyteller. Nick confides with the reader in the first pages of the novel. He says that he needs to tell the story of a man called Gatsby. It is as if Nick has to overcome disappointment and frustration with a man who has left him with painful memories. Nick says that, even though Gatsby did alright in the end, “it was the foul dust that collected in his wake” that disgusts him now. Nick, thus, begins the novel with uncomfortable memories. Time is a meaningful concept in this story. It is evident that dreams and memories are central to the overall plot and meaning. Secondly, the American Dream is a “green light” of desire that Gatsby never stops yearning for and something he will not forget over time, even as he is dying. This is so, even though no one cares about Gatsby or his dreams after he died, except maybe Nick. Finally, the fact that Fitzgerald uses flashback; that Nick is telling us about a main character after he has already died and before the story begins, is ultimate proof. The Great Gatsby is structured by Nick’s memory. Fitzgerald’s clever use of flashback throughout and within the novel is the greatest evidence that he intended his novel to be centered on memory and going back in time, which will be sort of a focus as we go further into this essay.

In conclusion, the setting and geography of The Great Gatsby is an exceptional influence on many things such as characters’ personalities, themes, and foreshadowing. It relates characters to where they live and how they act. East and West Egg, the valley of the ashes, and Nee York City all house different types of people that the main characters in the story represent. The setting, especially the weather foreshadows what will happen that day in the novel. If one regards the locations and conditions they may find out a lot about what a certain character is planning to do or how they are feeling on that particular day. Therefore, the setting and geography dictates many things about the characters such as social status, personality traits, and background, while the weather incorporates a character’s feelings into the setting.
In the novel the Great Gatsby a man named Nick who moved to New York durning the 1920s becomes a bond trader. Nick later realizes that he is living next to a huge mansion owned by the one and only Gatsby. Every evening Gatsby would host large extravagant parties and the rich and famous would attend .One night Nick was invited to join the huge party, later finding out that Gatsby was once in the army. Gatsby's wealth was never put out in the public, so no one honestly knew where or how he became rich. Nick and Daisy long lost cousins after so long finally reunite and are shocked by the stories one another has for each other. Daisy is married to Tom a rich nice looking business man, however daisy has no clue about Tom's secret life. Mrydal the wife of the mechanic has been having an affair with Mr. Tom. Later in the story it talks about how when Daisy was younger her and Gatsby where together, however Gatsby still has feelings for her. While Gatsby is at home he watches Daisy while she is at the lake. Daisy lives with her husband and one child. Gatsby and Nick later on become great friends. Gatsby decides to share how he gained his wealth with Nick, which was very unique to him because Gatsby inherited it from a Yacht owner. Nick was very interested into learning more about Gatsby's personal life. Gatsby and Daisy get a chance to see each other and eventually the emotions they use to have some how come back.

After fighting in World War I, or the Great War as Nick called it, Nick left his prominent family in the West of America for the North where he intended to learn the bond business. Nick was originally supposed to share a house in West Egg near New York City with an associate of his, but the man backed out and so Nick lived with only a Finnish cook. Right next door, Gatsby lived in a glorious mansion with expansive gardens and a marble swimming pool, among other luxuries. Yet Nick did not even hear about Gatsby until he went to visit his distant family at East Egg next to West Egg.

This was an era when people were trying new things; women smoked and drank, many men found themselves in more wealth than they had ever had before, and the recently ended World War I sent the nation into an economic growth. When Gatsby returns, Daisy is still in love with him and, even though she is married, runs away with him, but only for a short period of time. Before the roaring 20s, this would be uunusual, but as the women's rights movements set in, it is not so uncommon of a sight. (Caldwell). Daisy can be seen as a “flapper”, a woman of the 1920’s who went out as much as men and went to great parties, like Gatsby’s. But how did Gatsby acquire his wealth in the first place? It is important to understand that in the 1920’s, alcohol had been prohibited, and people were finding ways to acquire it illegally. (Wikipedia). This made “bootleggers” a lot of money, and Gatsby is involved in such business.
“The film adaptation of The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013 is almost as ingenious as the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. It is easily understood, and keeps the audience attentive up until the very end. The sceneries, in most cases are very close to the description given in the novel and are very pleasing to the eye. Even the actors are well cast in most instances.
