Value Hedonism as stated from the text for this semester is “ only states of pleasure have positive intrinsic value and only states of pain have intrinsic negative value; anything else of value is of mere extrinsic value” (Timmons, 2016). Intrinsic value is when a value is for its own sake and for the value of or the sake of something or someone else. Value Hedonism converts the things that us as humans value and turns that into pleasure. An extrinsic value only occurs when the subject is affected by an intrinsic value. We as humans sometimes let our desires for pleasure make our decisions good or bad. A prime example of something that is intrinsically valuable that we are humans use to pleasure them is Food. Sweets are not nutritious for our bodies, we are recommended to not eat this type of food. We as humans eats desserts, so that we satisfy our cravings to eat something of this nature which is pleasurable. We as humans lead our lives by what is going to give us the most pleasure, without thinking about the intrinsic negative value that it could possible have as well as the extrinsic values, “Pleasure is thought to be intrinsically valuable because even if it did not lead to any other benefit, it would still be good to experience”(Hedonism, n.d.). This example does not prove that value hedonism is false. Because if it were false eating food would not turn into something that is pleasurable or intrinsically negative. Food would only have a positive value to our bodies, no matter how good or bad it is. This example proves that value hedonism is real. I believe that the things that we consider valuable to us can potentially turn into wants, and that is when those values become pleasurable. The question is where do these traits derive from, “These traits derive from natural internal tendencies, but need to be nurture; however, once established, they will become stable” (Virtue Ethics, n.d). These internal tendencies are what help up make decisions, we make decisions based on what we tend to always do. These tendencies are what make up our characteristics of who we are. What we tend to do can make us morally right or morally wrong. Let's say that there is a group of friends 5 friends Billy, Josh, Caleb, Jake Austin. All the boys are athletically built, but one of them, Josh gets into a traumatic car accident that changes his life forever and he then becomes paralyzed over the summer that he was supposed to go to high school.. All 5 of these boys are in 9th grade ranging from ages 14 to 15. The boys all got there schedules and all planned to sit together at lunch on the first day of school. They all remained friends over the rest of the summer. When lunch came around on the first day of school Billy one of boys was friends with an upper class man, who said that the 5 boys could come and eat with them. All 5 boys including josh went to the table, but Billy’s friend said that Josh could not sit with them because he did not allow “freaks” to sit at his table.
