Jon Senker Mr. Venker English 2 25 May 2024 The Fatal Flaws of Jay Gatsby In literature, a tragic hero is one who has the potential for greatness but is doomed to fail because of their own actions. A tragic hero has a near flawless reputation but fails to capture the opportunity given to them. Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald represents a perfect example of the tragic hero character molded with his riches, charisma, and influence on others, but also with his deceitful and dishonest ways which all lead up to his unfortunate death and loss of true love, Daisy Buchannan. One factor that led to his lies about his upbringing, which caused people to not trust him. Gatsby admitted that he was only actually at Oxford for a few weeks but his trust among the people around him, especially Daisy, had been lost, leading to his eventual downfall. Another example of Gatsby’s deception is displayed when Gatsby reveals that the name Jay Gatsby is not even his name. Gatsby tells Nick Carraway that his real name is James Gatz and “he changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (Fitzgerald 98). Fitzgerald includes small dialogue like this to exhibit how the other characters start to develop suspicion towards Gatsby. This dialogue also demonstrates how Gatsby was able to hide his past life behind all his money and glory. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Jay Gatsby’s wealth as potential for greatness and his eventual downfall of his death and loss of love, indirectly caused by his secretive personality, to convey how wealthy people in the 1920’s used their riches to bypass others emotions and their own consequences.
