Unfortunately, many individuals in our community today are stigmatized because of their mental or emotional disability. Stigma is a mark of disrespect against a person diagnosed with a mental illness. This practice has gotten worse over time, with false and demeaning stereotypes developing for these people. Social stigma can affect the lives of these people more that one could even imagine. To solve this problem, we as a society need to stop labeling people based on their mental illness diagnosis. There are many examples of how individuals with mental disorders are treated by people who stigmatize them, but a few are veterans with PTSD, children with autism, and teenagers with depression. Soldiers who come back from war with PTSD are ashamed to tell their friends and family, because society has labeled it as a mental illness for “weak” people, when in reality, it is a real life-changing illness. Regarding the stigmatization of soldiers with PTSD, the embarrassment and shame caused by this stigmatization can prevent them from seeking the mental therapy they need. In a significantly more dramatic and sad example, the labeling of teenagers can lead them to even worse depression, and like in the case of Abigail Yager, lead them to attempting to take their own life. In a third example, stigmatization can also affect how much of a person’s potential is realized over the course of their life. For example, people labeled Jacob Barnett as a person who would never learn, never be smart, and never accomplish great things. While their stereotyped predictions were completely wrong, this almost kept Jacob from is full potential, as he was held back in special education classes, while his brain was years ahead of everyone
