According to the reading, social imagination is “the ability to see the connections between our personal experiences and the larger forces of history." Furthermore it helps us ponder our own regular habits or customs, which allows us to think about them as if they were not familiar to us. Social imagination can be used in many instances; to explain why people take their shoes off as soon as they walk into a house, or why people prepare foods with different ingredients in various cultures. Removing shoes when one steps into a home can be seen as a respectful gesture or for sanitary purposes. Many people; even if they think this custom is odd or they don’t know why others do it, will remove their shoes

This idea explains the idiom “when in Rome do what the Romans do.” As for the preparation of food, many countries may have different names for similar dishes, this depends on history, language and sometimes ingredients. When cooking most people use what they have, so if one country for example, uses certain types of meat in their dish it can be because that is what is available to them. Students of sociology can travel and meet people from different backgrounds other than their own, possibly take cultural courses or do personal research on cultures in order to acquire the sociological imagination. In addition to learning about different cultures people are able to compare similarities and differences, this allows us to realize that although we all lead different lives much of our life experiences are similar. The idea is that social imagination can be applied in just about any aspect of life in a way to observe how interactions and actions are influential to other individuals and situations. Social Imagination as coined by Mills is the idea for one to take a look at other social problems through an unbiased lens. This idea to be able to look at problems in the world and not think of them in a way that is familiar, but yet to make them something new. According to Berger (2015), Social learning theory is the behaviorism that emphasizes the influence that other people have over a person’s behavior. The individuals learn without an enforcement. The Social Imagination in my Life Described by Mills, the social imagination is as follows: “What [people] need, and what [people] feel they need, is a quality of mind that will help them to use information and to develop reason in order to achieve lucid summations of what is going on in the world and of what may be happening within themselves” (1959, 14). My opinion of social imagination is how our personal problems and experiences affect larger public issues. Whether a macro or micro issue, all of these issues are important to a formation for a better society. Social imagination can be present in social institutions, cultural factors, and historical factors. These different facts and institutions are important to the future formation of our society as a whole.

The human imagination is a very powerful thing. It sets humanity apart from the rest of the creatures that roam the planet by giving them the ability to make creative choices. The imaginary world is unavoidably intertwined with the real world and there are many ways by which to illustrate this through literature, either realistically or exaggerated. Almost everything people surround themselves with is based on the unreal. Everything from the food we eat to the books we read had to have been thought of by someone and their imagination. The imagination empowers humans.^1 It allows people to speculate or to see into the future. It allows artists to create, inventors to invent, and even scientists and mathematicians to solve problems. J.R. Tolken wrote “Lord of the Rings” by sitting in his backyard and imagining everything coming to life.^2 He thought about all the “what if” possibilities. But this method of storytelling can be used in much more subtle and/or sophisticated ways than in science fiction or fantasy novels. Through such works as the short story Dreams and the novel “Headhunter” by Timothy Findley, the film “the Matrix”, and the short story the Telltale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, one can see how a writer can use the concept of the imaginary invading reality to write their story.
A competing idea, cultural relativism, is a process of understanding other cultures on their own terms, rather than judging according to one’s own culture. “understanding one’s own culture and other cultures can lead to more effective action across cultures” (251) This is often the perspective of social scientists who work with people and is the result of the work of anthropologist Franz Boas. Cultural relativism helps us to understand that there is not "one right way" to approach many of the aspects of daily living. It is important to try to employ cultural relativism because it helps see the society objectivity, encourages respect, creates learning opportunities that could make humanity stronger, a system of niche expertise, eliminates the concept of separate, but equal.
Social cognitive theory is the study on how an individual stores, processes, and applies information about others in their everyday life. It was first known as the “Social Learning Theory”, and was later changed to the term known today as the “Social Cognitive Theory”. The definition of social cognition is defined as any cognitive process that involves one or more than one person. While the definition of cognition is unconscious process in the brain that bring about representations. Social cognition purpose is to study social knowledge, social structure, group behavior, social influences, social categories (age, race, sex) defines a person.
