What are some of the major scientific developments of the 20th Century? The 20th century was a time of great advancements in the field of technology. Men walked on the moon, polio was cured, and penicillin was discovered. Yet in our timeline of events one scientific development changed everything. The theory that not only could atoms be split to form massive amounts of energy, but that it could be utilized in a chain reaction to create a massive burst of energy. On one side was massive destruction, on the other was world peace through fear of their own weapons. The creation of the atomic bomb is above every other scientific development of the 20th century because of how it lead to America winning the war. If we had not developed the atomic bomb hundreds of thousands of American troops would have been slaughtered by the fierce and devoted Japanese. Yet at the same time science has also ruined some societies and forever has scarred the land. One of sciences greatest yet most dangerous achievements was the invention of the Atomic bomb. This device not only destroyed an entire Japanese society, but also destroyed land with radiation. We have damaged lands with nuclear fallout not only from our bombs, but from our reactors. We have killed countless people with our inventions. “In 1946, the Manhattan Engineer District published a study that concluded that 66,000 people were killed at Hiroshima out of a population of 255,000. As long as there is love, there will be hatred; as long as there is peace, there will be war, and as long as there is a positive side, there is a negative side. During the Second World War, the Nazis were very powerful. Due to the fear of the Nazis, Americans started a project called “The Manhattan Project" in order to build a very deadly weapon that could even blow cities apart. The allied powers were so concerned with Nazi domination, that they never considered the outcomes of creating an atomic bomb which are also positive and negative. The development of the atomic bomb boosted the level of understanding in terms of physics and chemistry of that particular time period.

The media was covering stories about protection from a nuclear attack and the government was right next to the reporters helping to further the creation of fear with their messages about preparation.

The Atomic Age represents the most epic era and is composed of diverse controversial issues in the human history. In the late 1945, President Harry Truman informed to drop two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These two bombs quickly yielded the surrender of Japan and the end of the World War 2. However, the impact of it led us to debate whether this decision was actually right or not. First off, it would be hard to imagine how Japan would have been surrendered without the atomic bomb.

Advancements in technology and science contributed to one of the most gory and bloodiest wars in the annals of human existence. These new technological advancements revolutionized how people regarded war. War was no longer where the opposite forces fought in a coordinated battle. War evolved into a game of cunning strategy where the side with the bigger, more powerful, and smarter toys played better. This led to a fierce competition where each side tried to create the smarter machines and better weapons, leading to deadly mass killing weapons in the process.
The atomic bomb is the subject of much controversy. Since its first detonation in 1945, the entire world has heard the aftershocks of that blast. Issues concerning Nuclear Weapons sparked the Cold War. We also have the atomic bomb to thank for our relative peace in this time due to the fear of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). The effects of the atomic bomb might not have been the exact effects that the United States was looking for when they dropped Little Boy and Fat Man on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively (Grant, 1998). The original desire of the United States government when they dropped Little Boy and Fat Man on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not, in fact, the one more commonly known: that the two nuclear devices dropped upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki were detonated with the intention of bringing an end to the war with Japan, but instead to intimidate the Soviet Union. The bomb also kept Russia out of the war, preventing post-war complications such as those who had occurred in Europe, and later on in Korea. When all the factors are taken in to consideration, the bomb saved more lives on both sides of the war than it took. The positive implications outweighed the negative. The decisions to drop the bomb, as morally difficult as it have been, made the best of an extremely unattractive situation.
